Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Felt like a heat wave today. Reminded me so much of spring, that had fried chicken, instead of doing a roaster.
Nice thread. At this time I only do meaties. Have to many neighbors that we buy eggs from. Would feel guilty starting layers.

2 days of training in stevens point ( thurs & Friday ), may have son give me a brewery tour. Though I'm sure most college kids steer away from that kinda of thing :)

I finally have an update about chickens!

my young pullets are starting to lay. WoooHoooo! I found many little eggs today including a medium brown I think came from one of the cukoo marans. Does anyone have an experience with marans eggs getting darker as they mature?

Now waiting for the blue egg layers to begin.

I am hoping to have Marans soon..

I have no experience with them to date. I think quite a few of them on here have them.. I would like to know too.

Here's a picture to share: this is what we watched over the weekend..... ended with 25 chicks

It might take a bit for the pullet to get adjusted to laying eggs- some darker up a bit as they lay more and others stay the same- just depends on how long the egg travels through and picks up pigment.

Here are some eggs from our blue copper marans(2 on left), welsummer(4 in the middle) and cuckoo marans(3 on right)

been extremely busy working on getting units ready for Feb 1st- have 2 that are just about done- 1 should be completed tomorrow-they were needing top to bottom cleaning and repairs. Both look much better now.....now if they will stay that way is another story.

off to get the incubator going again- have another group of eggs to start.

The weather was not to bad today. The chickens and ducks were out most of the day. The snow was not that bad, we got a slight dusting. The rest of the week looks half way decent. heat wave in the 20's.

Again..I want to state. I do not have buff orpingtons..just imported english black and blues

Delisha... I want some wide butted blues fom you :D :D :D

Actually marans eggs will lighten the longer they lay. Then after they take a break from laying their "paint pot fills up again." But new layers typically start of as dark as they will be.

Beautiful eggs..I have a few in the bator..but those shipped eggs are not doing so well

I sure did have an eventful drive home tonight! There was a little blurb of snow that decided to dump right over Oshkosh through Winchester... with the winds there were whiteout conditions. You could be cruising along at 50 then WHAM! No road, no sky, nothing. Just the rumble strips to guide you along. People were driving with their hazard lights on, that is how bad it was, and no going faster than 25. I have been nervous driving before, but this was downright scary. The funniest part was as soon as I reached 10 all the snow went away, the stars were out and it was clear sailing.

Baking the cake tonight. I hope I finish this cake before midnight tomorrow.

No DrH I am NOT going into hiding. I may poke the bear every once in a while.....

thanks! I was surprised that all 4 cuckoo marans eggs hatched, we'll see what this round does in 21 days or so.

cold weather and shipped eggs don't always work so well

my mom likes the marans eggs for eating- she says she can taste a difference between them and the others and never turns me down for some

Hi everyone....two eggs for me today...one frozen and the other dropped by the 6 yr old...oh well. It sure did get nasty this afternoon...and the wind shifted...northeast wind...don't normally get that on my bluff.
Suppose to get back up to 37 on Monday...think I will let my feathered friends out to stretc...maybe let Pig play with them. ;-) Gave them a few more slices of hay to smash round...that made them happy. I think some of your chickens are eating better than me...oatmeal with blueberries..yum!
Loved seeing the littlechicks hatch...fun!

Ah yes, oatmeal & blueberries served up all nice and toasty at the Vicki spa, complete with carpeted ramp to wipe their little chookie toes off on before entering.

My girls got a baked pumpkin and a ham bone from the bean soup to peck at today. NO carpeting. They don't seem to want to step outside in this cold or the snow, so I guess their toes won't get too muddy.

The snow was coming down like crazy here earlier, but yet the moon was out. The wind was really gusty too. Crazy yuck weather. Glad you got home safe & sound Bl4. I just hate driving in that crap.

So where ya been, Bigz????? I saw you earlier.

Jim seems awfully quiet too.
