You are right! I keep looking. I talked to them again and all of a sudden a third one started moving around

They're happy to hear their momma. Congrats! And don't get frustrated if they take a long time to hatch out. They know what they are doing, and they get tired often so they take frequent breaks. They might be out by morning.

How many did you set?

Quote: Now is the time for the big warning,, DO NOT attempt to help them along.. they have been doing this for centuries,, without anybody's help..

Really? Tomorrow? That would be sooo nice since I am thinking that the kids might not have school and I would love for them all to see it. I set 7 eggs, but one was just a real experiment. A huge double yolker. I have no faith in it hatching but thought it would be fun to try. Going to have the kids talk to them tomorrow and see if anything happens. I won't touch the eggs Jim, promise.

Cool! Glad he's been doing his job, just like his daddy taught him!

TO.... so sorry about your hen, that really sucks!

Amber.... We did/do allot of building with scrap. Like Jim said, it can be very labor intensive working with scrap and you don't always have what you need. But It can be done and it depends on what kind of scrap you can get.
Well, I kinda lost track of where I was with the posts so not responding to much

and I forget... allot...

Like many of you, we too will have large areas of "skating rings"! It's almost a solid puddle from the deck to the coop.... looks like a job for the wood ash. Maybe by the time I get in the house most of it will be off the boots.... what a mess! Doesn't look like we will get too much snow though. I have mixed emotions about that. Much as I hate snow, this area got hit bad with the drought. Without a good bit of snow our water table is still going to be rather low this year. If we have another dry year there are going to be allot of dry wells around here.

Well, off to finish dishes.... night all!

Anyone with a REAL steady hand and a light touch?

Uummmmm... I say every time I'm not going to touch the eggs. And every time I do. (Hanging my head because I know what Jim's thinking). It is so frustrating to see them take so long. To see them struggle. But I'm learning an important lesson: it is easier on me to let them be than have to put down a chick that wasn't ready to come out.

Good luck with the babies!!!!!

they are not struggling,, they are exercising and building muscles.. and absorbing the yolk..
even if most of the shell has dropped away,, do not help them.. if the shell sticks to a chick, and the but end is clearly out of the shell,, then it is OK to take the shell away.. but not if there are other pips working.. I have never seen a half grown chick with a shell stuck onto it.. they do shake them loose on their own ,, given time..
