Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

She is leghorn, road island red, and Cornish mix.
a great mom and has raised some nice chicks..I try hard not to let her hatch her own chicks because she is on the little side and would not fill a pot. However she is known for vanishing and turning up with a few..this time I found her nest, replaced the eggs and eventually move her in the coop. She hid in the shed this time, under the old riding lawn mower.

Well, some odd behavior in the coop yesterday. I have a broody butt Wheaten Marans. I let her have 2 eggs, then popped another one by her for fun. Yesterday I noticed she wasn't in the nesting box with her eggs. There was a different bird in there. Odd, but the eggs were being kept arm, so ok. I went out later looking for Marans eggs for a swap. There was a Marans in the box, and one on the outside crabbing to get in it. So out popped whoever was in there and let the crabby one in. Huh. I'm looking for eggs, and I thought the girls were on a mini strike. Nope. Turns out the nesting box of broody butt's is the favorite one. She gets kicked out, or let's them in, they lay and leave, and she hops back in there. Pleased as punch at the new eggs she didn't have to lay but now she gets to sit on. I looked under her last night and there's 7 or 8 eggs now! I guess I need to clean out the brooder in the coop and lock her in, letting the other girls have the box back, and her not taking all my eggs. What a sneaky snot!

All alone in the office today, everyone is either out on jobs or on vacation...Sitting here listening to the scanner radio of my smart phone, sounds like there are some slippery roads out there and some crazy drivers!

Joe

What has happened to MLH, I see there is a chix days at our local hardware store coming up, wondering if she and her husband are putting that on. I might have to just peek my head in and say hi if it is and at the very least get my $2 coupon!

Quote: By that you mean the ladybug-looking things? For some reason, I was thinking of the Japanese beetles, which my chickens just devour. Unfortunately I don't think I will ever have enough chickens to eat all of those nasty things.

I hope you feel better soon, Ang!

Kristi, that was my idea too. Pick my own! If I can get to them before the birds.

Bigfam, at least mark the eggs that she has now so you can tell them from newer eggs that were laid. That really helps. That is a really common thing for hens to boot a broody out of a nest so they can lay their eggs. That is why I started separated my broodies from the rest of the flock. Less stress on mom & less of a chance of an egg getting damaged. And you can control what eggs go under her.

Where is MLH anyway? I hope her DH is ok.
It is really snowing down here. I hope everyone stays safe on their commute home tonight. It is the tiny little flakes that the wind is just blowing everywhere, like right under the door of the coop/carport.

I am in the same boat with you! I have a 17 yr old giving me more gray hairs daily! I am getting great advice from those who have 'been there, done that' and what my friends parents have done to them. I have no problem whatsoever being the 'mean mom' either. Right now we are looking at removal of phone, and limit time with bf. Stipulations of finding employment are also a must, as well as keeping grades up.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
uugghh mine is 14... great athlete, great academics(potentially).....but NO Ambition!!! If the child would JUST apply himself...........and have a bit of a "cop on" I think some days he barely remembers his name or address... ggeeeesh... We have Freshman orientation this week, to get him to understand the importance of high school and how you do there follows you forever seems like I am talking to a wall. ( I get the blank expression) then it's back to the stupid phone! Which btw is a GREAT tool to take away!!! I am looking into athletic type "boot camps" to maybe teach him that he has in NO WAY pushed himself to his limits ( as he thinks he has ~~eyes rolling~~)

I am also on a low carb diet through a chiropractor. I have one of their shakes in the morning with their vitamins/minerals/fish oil. Then a protien bar for a snack. Lunch is 6 oz meat with 2 cups fresh veggies ( certain ones only ) another snack bar... then the same as I had for lunch. They have different snack options, chips, bars, smoothies...
The big thing is water intake. I am supposed to drink have my body weight in ounces in water (tea counts no sugar or milk)............so if you are 100lbs you have to drink 50oz of water a day. I am also allowed 2 eggs as my lean protiein for my meals. Been on it for about a week and have lost 6lbs.

kgj, your son is in the "braindead" teenage years. Boys are especially prone to it, I think. Dontcha just want to

that asleep-at-the-wheel look sometimes?

Oh I do not envy you. Personally, I think all teens should have to attend a 6 week boot camp-ish type of experience. Learn some respect, some discipline. What it means to work hard & sweat a bit. But that's just me.

Congrats on the diet so far! No wonder you want to
