Happy Blessed Sunday all!

hope you all are safe and warm today. Nothing up here yet so the girls are out dustbathing and snacking on mealworms in the greenhouse.

This was the girls' breakfast, looked better than mine! Oh well, the rolls have started their first rise and later they are to go with a nice roast beast and veggies

Now it's off for another cuppa and the Sunday papers then prepping things in case we lose power later (which if we get all the ice they're saying it's a sure bet). The girls get a new pile of barley straw to play in just in case. We do have the small garden cottage (really mainly set up for the hunting season "overflow") that has a propane heater built into the wall and a critter carrier for each chook should we lose power in bitter cold but thankfully we shouldn't need that this time. Still nice to just know it's there if we need it.

Have a snuggly day my Chookie lovin' friends

I have a Speckled sussex hen that I have noticed a weird quirk with-wondering if anyone has any insight into chicken psychology LOL: SHe goes around and pulls the eggs out of the nestboxes. I sat there and would put them right back in-she would then "retrieve" it and pull it right back out onto the coop floor. She seemed to go around to the different boxes and do this. Any ideas? Anyone else have a hen that does this?

Also: meat fat: is this a good ro bad thing to feed to flock? Like the leftover fat from a roast?

I have a young roo that goes in to see what all those girls are doing in the nest boxes that throws out eggs when he scratches. I have a plan for how to fix him though. you may not want to go with my plan.

My birds love protein any protein. The deer suit was esspecially popular with no ill effects. I also put out ham bones, beef fat and such. not often, but it will not harm them.

JJ Thanks for the update on the animal fat!

"Ruby" doest try to eat them or do anything with them other than remove them from the box and walk away. It was almost like she was playing a game or making a statement that the others needed to leave the box the way the found them! LOL OK Im adding human thoughts to a chicken brain.....but just found it strange.
I am thinking I may need to add more boxes....I have 4 of those gray plactic boxes that they all line up to use, and none of them want to use the wood 3 side by side smaller boxes at all-not even the banty's. I have 21 hens so am thinking I need to add one or two more?

Well meat would be better than straigt fat. Some believe that too much protein will result in gout because of the acid by product created by the natural break down of proteins. However, I think this is a bit out of the park so to say. Although, there is some evidence (or hear say) that too much body fat on ckns. will reduce egg production a bit. In this, one could also say too much corn could be responsible for too high of a fat ratio also.
