Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh wow- that is all I can say....

Still no eggs- figures too because I have been asked to provide my old music teacher with eggs. He sent me a $25 check, and I am supposed to bring him eggs every week. Well now no eggs of course/ I hope they pick back up. They were laying all through that cold snap and now nothing.
What has changed with your layers? Have they had a shock or some stress? I once had baby coons in my hen house for a couple nights that had my hens not laying for more than a week.

and I would take the check and buy your customer eggs from someone who has fresh eggs until yours start laying again. Never give up an egg customer.

Hi All!

Dan... I"m sure allot of people thought the same thing! "Chicken Little was right!"

bl4... So glad he's eating!

Feeling a little "off" tonight and I want to re do the "roof" of the turkey pen so I think I'll hit the hay early. Night All!

BTW.... Did I scare Bigz off? Didn't see a post from him.

I found my pastel call drake hanging from the side of his pen this morning. Somehow he managed to get his wing caught. Looks like he may have frostbite on his feet. And all his feathers are broke :( I don't think he broke any bones though.

BBP- sorry to hear about your duck, hope he will be okay

Thinking that our cocker spaniel has another ear infection starting again....... we have taken her to the vet for 2 others and treated with medicines and they seem to keep coming back, wondering if there is something different we can try to help prevent them. I don't know how many she has had before we got her but the vet told us that this can cause hearing loss

so far only 1 chick has made it half way out of its shell this morning, hoping that we get a few more to hatch....

I don't know how people have farm animals when working full time! I've been so beat after work I don't want to take the dog out for potty let alone go to chicken chores. Yuck.

New job is going good. I'm so glad to be on the computer training instead of orientation. I can stay awake much easier! So much info in the system. The number of programs to learn as well. I've been given 8 different log ins. Also got the awesome news that I have not 1, not 2, but 3 insurance premiums coming out of my first check. Because I started on the 11th and not the 15th, I get to pay that extra premium. Sigh. I'll get some money... Sometime. I guess it's good I'm working so much now so there is enough to cover it.

I'm not getting out of my Jammie's today. I have to go to the store and the post office. I'm going in my red plaid flannel pj bottoms and Uggs. (I do have a top on too boys) Don't care what looks I get. I'm tired and I haven't gotten dressed 5 days in a row for Years, let alone hair, makeup, and accessories!

Gotta go into town now in pj's.

Good morning..wow it is bitter cold. The chicks are doing OK. Mom Orpington is still on her nest. She has two new chicks. I took the other eggs out so she feeds what she has. Stuck the eggs in the incubator. The new hatched have been peeping under her for days. They need to eat.The 9 other chicks out in the other coop are doing well. They are little roadrunners out there.

I go for a second interview on Tuesday myself. So I will let you know how it works out eventually how a person can work full time, and take care of poultry. I have not had a full time job since I was a kid. Getting a full time job is a scary adventure.

BBP..I hope your duck is OK

Dan I want to buy some eggs this spring. By then your Ameraucana Roo should be a pro. It would be nice to have some straight Ameraucanas, but the its ok if the Marans are crossed. How long do you let your grain sit to ferment? Does it stink at all? The only heat my coop gets is a 100 watt bulb, also used for light. This year I just left it on 24/7 and I have been getting 8:11 W/ one broody all the time (so it seems)yesterday was10:11. The water in the coop is not heated (next year investment) . However, the water has never froze this year. The coop is insulated well, and for a time, too good...I had to revamp my venting to get more air in and let some heat out. About the Russian Rock, they are lucky it blew up in the air....What would have happened if it hit the ground. Moreover, they could not pick up a 10,000 ton rock on radar???

good morning.. I wouldn't dare go to town in what I sleep in, (or out of)

I started putting sections together yesterday,, It did not go well,, I have to re-think my plan..

I will take pictures as I go.. if I don't forget that I have the camera in my pocket..

I am going to the clamp store and getting a couple more sets of pipe clamps.. when you do not have another person to help, clamps are your best buddies..

I also am going to change the location of where I wanted to put the pen.. I didn't think of overhead branches of the black walnut trees.. and I do not want to add trimming branches to the job..

well, cuppa us almost gone and what is left is cold, so I am outta here..

good brisk morning in the north

deli/GS I will not be selling any BCMs this year, the birds I have are a work in progress, I intend to add some better stock but for now there are far better sources for eggs than these

Once the AMs get going and I have test hatched a couple batches to check fertility I will sell some of those eggs and most likely chicks if all goes well

I will have a couple of Olive egger crosses I will be doing for sure,,,these also will be tested before I sell any. Those cock birds were active last fall when separated so I don't foresee a problem.

the FF doesn't smell bad if you do it right, I soak the grain for 24hrs in a small tub or bucket covered to the top with the liquid mix (warm water and ACV a few Tbl spoons if ACV for a gallon of h2O), then I dump it into a double pail setup, the top or inside bucket has holes drilled in the bottom so it drains the liquid out, I dump that liquid through a couple of times over the next 24hrs (save that liquid for the next batch) I then feed the soaked/swollen grain and start the process again. I do this in my basement next spring it will be outside most likely in the gh. IF you let the FF go anaerobic it will stink,,,,this happened here twice I let it work too long and the ferment turns to rot,,,not what you want. Watch "Moonshiners" and when they are making mash it's the same kinda deal,,,,,,it takes maybe 3-4 days for the 1st batch then once you are reusing the liquid the 48 hrs is enough.

Jim I know what you mean about building alone, clamps, knees, toes lifting things,,,gotta be a contortionist

bbl have to make some calls

I dont think radar was the problem. object too small to track with the available telescopes to know it was coming.

nice ratio on eggs. I too leave the light on for em. (Tom Bodette style) I think Jim also said something about lights on all the time with no psychotic hens. Maybe when he gets back from the tool store he will chime in.
