Ninja Chickie!!!!!

Girls are snacking on a big plate of leftover spaghetti from last night. Keeps them busy in lockdown (windchill too rough for outside play today if they even would go outside in the wind) besides, it's so funny to watch them with it!!!!

Ok, hubby giving me "the eye" because I am supposed to be getting ready to go to FF so I better get a move on.

Blessed day everyone!!! (where's FT?~maybe we need to do a "where's Waldo" thing for her???)

CC..you were asking about MLH...Twain posted on Mad City Chickens that she got a kindle and is too busy with that right now. They are speaking at one of the F&F aruond here in a few weeks...will have to visit.

Well got the news finally at work, they want me to go full time with a wage cut so no thanks. I worked here fo 5 years and enjoyed it. I took a pay cut to be here based on the awesome flexibility. I understand they need someone full time as we grow, but cut my pay ... it is not worth it to me. So off I go to look for something else or enjoy my summer and then get a job. (chickens, gardening and kids, oh my!) money will be tight, but we can make it.

Anyway, that is my excitement. Trying to decide if I need that fan for the incubator or not now...

good am,

Annie rolled me out of bed because we have an eagle patrolling overhead.. she said she saw it yesterday, too.. we kicked both dogs out to sort of let the old boy know it might not be easy pickin's if he lands..

Kris, I was not saying that computer fans are not any good.. I do know that some of them are too weak to do much good.. and hooking up a fan made for the incubator is a little more user friendly than jury rigging up a foreign fan.. just trying to help in case someone is not real handy.. I was not trying to step on anyone's toes.. I guess I did not accomplish that too well.. maybe I should just keep my opinions to myself from now on.. not that anybody listens to me in the first place..

I have good news about my drill problem and good news.. called my nephew this am.. he dropped off a drill, and an impact driver along with two chargers and battery packs and carrying cases at my brother's house.. and now for the other good news.. both of my battery packs are charged up.... apparently just the indicator lights are not working.. I can live with that..

the bad news is, I will not be able to use any of them until it gets much warmer outside,, and that looks like it will be snowing when it happens.. I can live with that, also..

as cold as it is; the snow is melting off the metal roof already this morning.. yay for the sun..

Hello, how is everyone doing on this Wednesday morning? Im just getting over this horrible fever ive had since Sunday. This has been such a bad year for me getting sick. i think its the third time this winter iver been down for the count. usually im pretty luck, but not this year i guess...

Does anyone have a list of all the poultry swaps in wisconsin i could get? I found a website a couple weeks back but cant seem to find it anymore. I could have sworn there was a swap this weekend but i cant find any info. any help on any and all poultry swaps would be appreciated.
Thanks!!
I think there is a swap at Jefferson this Sat- not sure what the exact address is or what time either

hope you feel better! DS(7) is home today not feeling good- he has had a croupy cough since the end of last week and is just feeling out of sorts today- we have to watch him carefully as it could potentially cause him breathing problems as his airway gets restricted and if he panics then it makes things worse- so far we only had 2 trips to the ER in his 7 years and of course only in this type of weather.

DrH- sorry to hear about the test results for your dad

Kim- where is a good place to get the Olive leaf oil from- it's our cocker who has continued ear issues

Jim- don't stop giving your advise- it's nice to get someone else's point of view on how to do things. DH has never had a battery rebuilt- by the time his are dead they aren't worth rebuilding, you might want to watch your chargers that aren't showing if the batteries are charging or not- just so they don't over heat and cause problems

JJ- when you are putting your syrup in jars, what do you use to strain it through- we have tried cheesecloth and clean(brand new) paper type paint strainers- DH would like to find something that works better to remove the sediment out.

hope everyone elses critters are doing good, stay warm!

Thanks for the hugs everyone. Even cyber hugs help a little.

I am noticing the ways in which the house is 85lbs lighter. Lots of extra scraps going into the compost, for one. Dan & GR, aren't GSD's the best in the world? We'll look for another when the time is right. I never ever felt uneasy being home alone with the kiddos with Aries always on guard.

DrH, I am sooo so sorry about your dad.

Aside from the valve, is he feeling ok?

Good morning! Way too funny Jim....that is EXACTLY what I was going to recommend! See, you're not ALWAYS wrong! (sorry--had to do it) Anyhow, I bought a box of 100 of them when I was straining goat mill and they work great. If you have a metal strainer that fits on a pot then you can just push the filter into it. Goes through much slower than cheesecloth but gets everything out. I usually wet the filter first. I can dig mine out if you want to try some before you buy them H&R.

Also I have been meaning to comment on your cocker's ear troubles. Do you have him professionally groomed? I know that when we had our cocker mix as a kid they always pulled all the hairs out of the ear canals(ouch!) because that makes moisture stay in there and that is why they get the smell/infections. If you dont get that done you could try it...they come out easy with a stripping comb.

I agree on your advice to Kimmy Cind...nothing like house guests that dont ever go away! I have two right now...one is 24 and one will be 27! Can you say, "LAUNCH ALREADY?"

I think I dont have a paying job any more...took a look at the posted schedule at my client's place yesterday and I was NOT on it! I asked her and the housekeeper and they had no idea. HMMM.
I will have to give the scheduler a call...but I was kinda glad I guess; I think I want to do something different. What?

Well, I cant remember anything else...oh yeah--thought of you BL4 when I saw that 41 was closed! I said a prayer that you were still at work or didnt have to go in! It looked terrible on the news. I was able to convince said client that her Chiro appointment really wasnt that important! WHy risk it when the roads are so bad? The drive in was slow and the drive back wasnt any better...if I dont go back I cal definitely say that I wont miss that! It seems a snow storm always comes on the night before I need to drive there. I also wont miss doing my chores at 5 AM!

Time for me to head out...I have tried and tried to teach those chickens to help themselves in the morning...they have troubles with the can locks!

(PS) The swap is this weekend at Jeffferson County Fairgrounds--info here:

Good Morning everyone.

Dr. H - sorry to hear about your dad.

Amy- sorry about your Aries.

And since I am not all the knowledgable yet about chickens, incubators, ect I have no answrs for any of the questions ;). Boy is it cold this morning! It didnt look that bad but by time I ran outside to open the coop and feed everyone my fingers were on fire from being so cold. I got another duck egg today
wee.gif
. I know its cold but boy am I glad to see eggs again. I put a nest box on the floor of the coop and put up a wall so my ducks would have some privacy and sure enough Po ( the pekin) is laying behind the wall. I guess the idea worked lol. Well I guess that about it. I have some roofing stuff being delivered today. When USF Holland called we were concerned they wouldnt be able to make it down the road since we dont have anywhere for them to turn around and the road being so narrow. Well I guess one of the drivers said he could get it done so we'll see. If he cant make it they'll redelive tomorrow so I can meet them at the end of the road with the truck. Go figure I decided not to get up this mornign to take DH to town to carpool so of course no truck today. Ok I guess I'm done blabbing. Stay Warm!

find an old fashioned mild strainer,, the kind you set over a milk can.. I am prolly wrong about this, but I believe that is what my neighbor uses.. IDK if he uses the milk strainer pads or cheesecloth, though.. I should have paid more attention when I was helping..
thanks for the idea, I will look into that and see what I can find.

Cocker ear problems..I used to raise and show American Cockers..This recipe belongs to the President of the American Cocker Club

Ingredients:

White vinegar
Powdered boric acid
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Betadine antiseptic (or the generic version, known as Povidone-Iodine Solution)
Please note: do not use "Betadine Scrub", use "Betadine Solution"

Directions for mixing the solution together:

Pour six ounces of isopropyl alcohol in to a plastic applicator bottle. (a hair tint bottle works great) Add one
and a half teaspoons of boric acid powder. Be careful not to get any boric acid on your skin or clothes. If you
do, wash it off immediately.

Shake the solution extremely well, until the boric acid powder is dissolved, or for five minutes, whichever comes
first.

Add two ounces of white vinegar. Shake the solution some more, until the boric acid powder is dissolved, or for
another five minutes, whichever comes first.

Add one teaspoon of the Betadine antiseptic, and shake it up some more. Be careful not to get any Betadine on your
skin or clothes. If you do, wash it off immediately.

The ear cleaning solution is now ready to use.

I have a bunch of paper towels ready for soaking up the solution as it drips during massage.

Fill the ear canal's and massage for 5 minutes. Wipe the fluid with the paper towel as it drains down the neck and
inside the ear. Repeat until the fluid on the paper towel is clear. Do not let the dog shake its head until you are
done, and than let them do it out doors. If the infection is really bad, I have also super glued the ears together
on top of the head to allow air flow and to aid in healing. Repeat this daily until there is no odor, and than once
a week, than once a month for maintenance. Usually it takes two weeks to completely clear up. The trick is to be
vigilant. It will look good in a few days and almost healed in a week, but, keep going until completely gone.
