sunshinemartini!!! glad to see you! Pull up a roost and welcome to the flock!

All this chickie care talk makes me remember my last batch of little fuzzy butts, many years ago (when I lived on a farm outside Clintonville). Boy, I must have done everything wrong but they all made it. I just put them in a big cardboard box with old dishtowels on the bottom (and over the top when I wanted to quiet them down, etc.) and little dishes for food and water. As for heat??? I put the box behind my big wood cookstove in the kitchen! At night, just to be sure, I would put bricks I left warming in the oven, then wrapped in a light cloth, into the box with them. I raised a box full of Andelusians and colored Cochins that spring with nary a loss and all were healthy

Oh how ignorance must be bliss

Speaking of cute chicks, my big girls aren't happy this morning with their lockdown so they got a nice bowl of warm steamed oatmeal with a little skim milk for breakfast. Last I checked they were too busy slurping away to complain.

Hubby is determined we are going over the river and thru the potato fields to town today for the car's scheduled oil and rotation. Yeah, he could do it but it is still well under it's warranty (2012) and he likes them to give it the once over as well. Oh well, gives me an excuse to go "window shop" @ FF across the street. I need a couple things to set up my brooder for my little puff balls coming in a few weeks.

Hope everyone is staying safe and all critters are warm and well. Hugs and prayers

One more thought about your table, Ghost. If the wood isn't very thick on that bottom section, the tiles and whatever you use under them might stick way above the wood. Tiles usually are thicker than glass, no?
It might not be an issue, though, as it is on the bottom section as opposed to the top, but I kinda doubt tiles will be flush with the wood even if you could get a lip cut to set them into. Just a thought to consider.

Does anyone have any suggestions who to order good quality wyandottes and cochins fertile eggs from? No hatchery stock.

lots if info on that site, Urch/Turnland have some lines going back to the '50's, it's been suggested on the Heritage Fowl thread that Mr Urch is planning on retiring in the near future and his flocks will be sold, most likely gone from the upper midwest,,,,right now he's still active and goes to shows. I understand he loves talking about his birds. He ships chicks and eggs, also sells some adult birds.

another source, though limited in varieties. I have talked with Dick, good fellow. Eggs and chicks available,,,

remember, ordering either right now is very risky with our weather factor, you have some time to shop around.

also,,,I'm sure there are clubs out there for these birds, find a club, check the website most list breeders and what they offer..

welcome!!!

I have decided that after all my baby chicks arrived dead that I will get better quality and not have a box of dead chicks of I hatch my own. I am looking to purchase an incubator like a brinsea with auto turner. Does anyone have 1 for sale or know where I could buy a used 1? I have been looking on craigslist and on here but found nothing.

A much better choice. Be warned, though. Hatching is very addicting! Hello, my name is CC and I have a problem...........

What size/model of Brinsea you looking for?

And just an FYI, as Dan said, ordering eggs as well as chicks in cold weather is risky. Eggs can freeze too.

Have you checked out our Chickenstock thread yet? If you like camping or just want to join us for a day, we all get together at least once a year in Clintonville. And some of us bring along chicks/birds to sell or swap. If you can wait until the end of May.
