Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Vicki, having a hen with a bloody anything is only going to get worse if you cannot isolate her from the rest of the flock. The others will peck and peck at the blood and make it far worse, not to mention cause pain and unnecessary stress to an already stressed bird. I think the kindest thing you could do for her would be to isolate her with a little extra warmth and some vitamins/electros in her water for at least a few days. Having her in a darker location would also help keep her body from being stimulated to produce eggs, which will also help her to heal. Can you put her in the basement?

Thank you Cindy (and Delisha too!) For your knowledgeable input. First an update. The bleeding has stopped but just to be safe I sprayed her bottom with blucote so nobody (aka Soup) would be attracted to the "red" should the bleeding start again.

Really wish I could put her in the basement BUT we don't have one :-( few houses in our area do. The water table is just too high. Since the bleeding stopped, at least for now (hopefully for good) I am going to try to set up a spot in our extra bedroom and put her in there in a large dog carrier we have. I really hope she doesn't try to lay anymore before I can get her where I can control her light.
I'm CC, not Cind.

And the spare room sounds like it should work.

just a quick note and then i'm going to supper..

caught the pup with a dead delaware rooster.. IDK if he killed it or found it.. I reprimanded him as if he killed it, just in case.. either way , I don't want him chewing on my birds,, dead or alive..

I cleaned out one of the bators and started it up.. It is holding at 99 F and 16% hum%..

I have 22 eggs from the Hmong lady to set.. IDK how old her eggs are.. there are a few blue ones in the batch of many sizes and colors..

I had no intentions of joining the Easter Hatch, but now I guess I am in the running..

raining here,, supposed to get up to around 40 F tonight, so the rain should not freeze..

Delish....I am trying your suggestions

and the I am making cranberry preserves too
Nice job...they will be appreciated!!
Oh great... Ameracauna chicks are whiners? Just what I need more of in my house...

I have eggs set in one Bator so far. I got it up to temp and stayed nicely. I pulled out my crappy hatcher to get eggs in until I can get my good Bator. The crappy hatcher has no fan and is having a harder time getting to the right temp. But I have had these eggs sitting way longer than they should have, so it's better they're in some kind of incubator! Crossing my fingers I can get the other ones temp to regulate soon!

i also never mentioned, my Wheaten maran Roo that was acting weird is still around. But he sure looks like sh!t. I did gather 7 marans eggs and pop them in the Brinsea last week. It's a bit early, but I candled today and it looks like 5 of 7 are growing. It's so hard to candle marans eggs though!

My broody momma still has her 2 little baby Wheaties. They sure are cute! She also seems to be a very good momma. We have a boy and a girl from her. I love auto sexing marans!

i had a weird call today. I had a woman call and ask if I could hatch out some more black copper marans for her. She bought some from me last year and would really like more of their "genotype." I told her I bought the eggs from GA. So we're deciding whether she just orders the eggs herself and tries her hand at hatching, or if I should do it for her. She also said she heritage turkeys. Ok...? One in particular is a rare black type. She said that momma went and got groovy with some wild turkeys apparently, because momma hatched 11 poults in the woods in Jan! She said said they're very neat and very healthy. If I'd like one I can have one. I told her "I don't know. If it comes here its going to get eaten." She said "we'll that's what they're for!" She said her are already living with her chickens and are doing well. So I don't know, do I get a free heritage turkey to grow out and eat? Of course it's name would be something like Butterball, or Sandwich, or Succotash...

I'm thinking I might do some meaties. (After all my spring hatching s done) if I did them I'd like to keep them outside the whole time since they're so gross (I hear). I don't think I want the usual Cornish crosses because I hear they get so fat so quick and then ave hear attacks, or break their legs from the weight. So then would I look at those ranger type birds? Or any other advice? Deli, I think you'd have some into to add here...

I had better send this off. Hubby was puking and pooping last night. Better today. But woke up the 3 yr old to find him covered from head to toe in all sorts of bodily fluids. I had to hose him off in the shower, where he roceeded to have a bout of squirts in my hand. Now he has been keeping up the poo issue and having severe cramps like his brother. But since he can't talk (reminder he's the one with autism) he can't tell me what's wrong. He also doesn't nderstand the consoling words I say to him in his distress. It is sooooooo hard with him sick. I can't even give him the brat diet because he doesn't eat banana, applesauce, rice, or toast. He eats so few things, won't drink clear soda, or broth, or Gatorade. But if I keep giving him juice, he will have the squirts worse. I guess I'm going to google Unks suggestion of scalded milk to stop the squirts. We'll see. But with amount of clean up I did, and am still doing, I dont know how I won't get this...
If you want to start your own meatie line I can sell you a trio or trade you for a pair of female marans..I have quite a few in the incubator and I have at least 10 chicks now. They usually do not get over `14 lbs and are good mothers.
I have another newbie question....

How old should the chicks be before I can put them in an unheated garage? I will still use a heat lamp if need be.

Thanks!
At least a week old if it is over 40 degrees. Under 40 they need to be 4 weeks and feathered.
oh, and I forgot to add that we are having a really LOUSY weather day today with rain/sleet/ice. Just basically damp, cold and nasty. I have a radiant heater in the coop that is on a timer to turn on at night @32o and kick off @ 4oo at floor level which means the nest boxes and the roost above them is warmer. However, since Crockpot always shivers when it's damp and cold anyway, this morning I took the heater off the timer so it was nice and toasty in the coop (the girls have been in lockdown because of the freezing rain today anyway).

Delisha; I applied the lubricant like you suggested, just in case. Hopefully she won't lay tomorrow. It is already unusual for her to lay 2 days in a row and tomorrow would be 3 which I can't remember for certain her ever doing and I hope she doesn't now!
fl.gif

ok, hope I don't sound too dumb but you meant an EXTERNAL flush with Betadine, right???

silly side note~~~ I had snuck up on her with the BluKote while she had her beak in the supper dish and she gave a quick "what the h_ll" and gave me a SERIOUS stink eye!!!

( I usually set her up on the roost to work on her which she normally is really good about but seemed really touchy yesterday when I went to apply the NuStock for her skin/feathers which was my first hint something worse might be going on this time.)
I was talking internal flush. It sounds like you have done more than most would do. I would have had her for dinner a long time ago.
Ahhh, back in to warmth and dryness. :) Woke up to sleeting and rain, so delayed my coop cleaning plans this am. Got the layer pen coop all scooped out and the snow battled back for walkways, rebedded and the girls spent a good long while dust bathing in the fresh shavings. They were quite proud of themselves.

Miss TO came to visit today, dropped of some teensy eggs (bobwhite quail) for the incubator, took the grand tour, visited the dogs, the snakes, the chickens, and my boys very happily showed off the entire time. She brought me a starter kit for mealies, too, woot! Need to go get some substrate for them and move them into a nice bin to grow and replicate.

After the visit (and a round of pancakes for the boys), back outside to tackle the grow-out shed. Man, those ducks can make a mess in a hurry. Rebedded down, added some pine pellets for extra moisture absorption (scowls at the ducks) and to give them more to dig in. They unloaded the whole big feeder that I filled 2 days ago. Made some adjustments there as they seem intent and mixing their own substrate concoction. We'll see if that cuts down on the spreading of food for fun. LOL

Ahh, now to get myself some dinner before my Iowa Blue Standard Committee meeting tonight.
I wish I knew TO was coming..I would have run up for an hour or two for chicken chat. Ducks are horrible..to save the mess..FF the feed. They love the slop. (I feed outside)

You can tell age of eggs by air cells

BigFam, rough couple a days. It IS possible to be exposed to germs and not catch the illness (good immune system or already have immunity.) You might get lucky. Distant hugs to those sick kiddos, and hubs too.

I would take a free turkey any day! Get it nice and plump for Thanksgiving. Yum!

Evening all,

sorry be quiet for a long time, Short story, 18 year old son decided he had enough of rules. Moved out, failing classes, no car, 2 jobs. Blames me for daring to comment on his grades, or telling him to do his homework. He is a junior, so major Crash and burn. Been gone 5 weeks, looks like forever. He will figure it out, hopefully sooner than later.

Banties are doing well.
I see Twain is going to be in our area for his chicken seminars, Love them, he is so entertaining.
Need to start looking for chicks. Decide I won't ship, it is too unpredictable

hope all have been well
David

Very, very good advice! If you do not dip each & every ones beaks in the water, they might not figure it out. And Sav-A-Chik in the water is almost essential, IMHO. Good luck!
fl.gif
Yep, did that 2x with ALL of them, using Sav-a-chick. We stopped loss at 12 , for a total loss of 15 out of 137, for right now. it's been 24+hrs with no loss (thank goodness!!)

on the other hand...I almost bit the dust today after coming home from the Fond du lac swap with 2 peacocks and a peahen....and two ducks that are really cool but I forgot the name!!!! (guess that's what I get for leaving at 5:00am to get there as soon as it started!) Meanwhile, on the upside, my husband is speaking to me again!

Hurley-awesome colors to the eggs and really neat that when washed they are more blue/green!!!

Onotonah: So sorry to hear about your teen-kids get harder as they get older and its such a helpless feeling when you know the path they are taking and cant stop it!!!

Sunshine: Glad to hear things seem to have turned around!

CC: I will try putting golf balls in before I leave.
