Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

There is a strange bright light off in the eastern sky!!!

I'm thinking it's a good morning in the northwoods

I'm glad these swaps are so far away from me, God knows what I might come home with (after re-reading this I flashed back to saying the same thing in the '60's)

Jim I can understand you are wore out, poor old feller not used to working under the eye of a client.

egg customer coming this morning, ordered 8 dozen to take to friends/family in Chicago. A person could make serious money selling eggs to that market even at today's feed costs.

bbl time for morning chores

Good Morning Sunshine!

Aaaah- so nice to wake up to the sun! Chilly morning here, but seeing the sun and blue skies makes me so excited for spring.

Sorry to hear about all the sick kiddos! Hope they feel better soon. BigFam- I know what you mean about the little ones bums. At least with puke it is over and done with. With diarrhea it seems they get such terrible diaper rash. Hope his little booty isn't too sore!
I'm thinking that Cosmo (the pony) won't be able to go back in with the chickens. It has dried out a lot, but it is only a matter of time before it floods again. He is safe and warm where he is for now, but I think I'll run to the co-op and see about getting a hutch since they sell them there. That is if I can get DH to take the calf box off the back of the pickup. A lady is coming this morning to pick up a coupe dozen eggs. Second time she has come here, so she must like them. A man from town sent me a check in advance for eggs. He is house bound, so I deliver eggs to him on Fridays. He even sent extra $$ for travel time and mileage. I will not be charging him for travel, but I thought that was sweet of him. He was my grade school music teacher, and we have recently reconnected.
Anyway- hope you all have a great day!

Good Morning. Not to much going on here. I'm in loackdown for the quail eggs so of course I'm impatiently watching it like crazy. The recent snow was so heavy and the rain / ice took out my netting over my coop and pen area. Go figure, I just put the flock back in the enclosure cause they were pooping all over my porch excessivly. I'm waiting for one of them to figure out the netting is down and fly over the fence. Once one goes I'm sure they all will ( except for my Pekin and silkies). I had to put Shifu into the boy pen, he was being to ruff on the mallard females. He so much larger he was hurting them and pulling the feathers out of their head and neck. And he kep attacking anyone who walked near the coop . He's not a happy camper right now. Oh well. I was tempted to make him dinner but DH wont let me. I have 10 days left on my duck hatch so I am starting to collect more duck eggs for another hatch for a friend. I've been getting 10 eggs a day so we started giving them out to friends :) DD wants to sell eggs , but we'll see. It will have to wait until after Spring since our road is really bad right now and only going to get worse when it thaws.
Ok I guess I rambled enough, I hope every one has a warm day.

Oh and Jim sorry, no BO's here.

this picture looks frigid,,

are you going to buy a hutch for the fil , too?

ok, so I know many of you are in the same boat... my customers for eggs are friends... and I have one that takes 2 dozen a week (or three if I have it) almost every week. I want to up my prices a little to account for food prices going up, but feel bad as it is a friend. My eggs are not organic, but she loves that she knows where they come from and are loved pets. So I cant charge organic prices(I have one friend who is organic and asks $4 or 5 and gets it). I have been asking $2 and want to up to $2.50. Have you done this and what is the best tact you have found? Am I reasonable?

On a plus note, I have been getting 6-8 eggs a day from my 12 girls this week. They might yet pay for all their feed and then some. We as a family eat 12-18 eggs a week so that would be great for selling if they keep upping those eggs.
Show and tell is on Friday at school and we are taking two chickens in to Morgans kindergarten class. Thinking a silkie and our d'uccle Wookie. She has some special needs kids in her class and they love when the animals come to visit!

ok back to work... or something...

You are caught between a rock and a hard spot.. You have to lessen the shock for your friend..

the next time she picks up eggs, tell her about the cost of feed.. and then tell her that the next time she gets eggs, they will still be $2.oo/dz . but there after, you will have to get $2.5o/dz or you will have to reduce your flock to just cover your family's needs.. a good friend should understand.. if not, then let her find a new source.. don't beg,, and don't act as if you are asking for the moon.. just state the facts m'am and don't dwell upon it.. If you let on that the price is high, she will pick up on that in an instant..

kris I sell all the eggs that I get for $3/doz, there are others in this area that are at $2.50 and thinking they should raise

I would explain to that friend the your situation, if you check prices in the store all except the "factory eggs" that are used as loss leaders are all over $2.50,,,,,here Roundy's have a branded brown egg they are selling for $4.50+

good luck

If you have brown eggs, that is a plus.. somewhere people got the idea that brown = organic..

that kind of was sort of true years ago.. when the stores sold only white eggs.. so back then a brown egg meant that it was "down on the farm" produced.. which actually did mean organic, or close to it..

when I was in high school I worked at a non-chain grocery store.. the man who owned it had the barrel of herring next to the door, and he bought eggs from the farmers.. all of the check out girls had a candler right next to the cash register and they candled eggs during the no customer times.. there were many eggs with chicks in them..
