Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi I'm Chris a mom of 2 kiddos and a bunch of critters! We live in the Wausau area on a small hobby farm. I have just become a a BYC member as I recently picked up a batch of chicks that will be added to my adult flock eventually and realized I may need some help with this endeavor! It's great to hear about all your chicks and other hobbies!

Welcome dcba and newcomers - I'm rather new to this group too, but have been enjoying the posts for awhile now.

Go ahead, offend away.. but remember, when a skunk kills a chicken, remember who said I told you so..

TerriO was right, I came home without the gas.. the sun came out and we got no new snow..

I have been working with Judge through PM's with her bator.. If anybody else wants to take over, feel free.. but more than one person cannot be giving advice,, just say the word and I will bow out..

Amazing - thanks for sharing. We are just getting started in our chicken business. I've enjoyed the chatter about incubating, but didn't think I want to hatch my own. Now seeing this, may have to put this on next year's "to do" list.

I'm looking to add 2 hens to my existing "huge" flock of 2 hens this summer. So I'd be up to 4 hens total which is what I'm allowed.

DD would love to get a couple of chicks and raise them. I'd love to as well but I realize a few of the practicalities of it.

#1 Chicks are going to take more care than older pullets. I know they will need a heat lamp for a short time. I'm wondering how much we need to keep an eye on them. We're gone from about 7 AM to 3PM during the day. Are they ok for that amount of time?

#2 I know that we're not going to be able to introduce the little ones to the coop until they are at least a couple of months old and are bigger. So I'm going to have to figure out how to house them safely for that amount of time. And I think the existing girls are not going to take kindly to sharing their digs with newbies. So I'm thinking about how I can do that gradually.

Am I over thinking this? I guess my main question here is how much care and over site do new chicks need. If we are away for the work day is that too long?

Hundreds of posts behind. This has just been a week from hades. My other surgeon is out, so it's me. Lots of emergencies, worked Tues and Wed with a 2 hour cat nap between, into Thurs with 4 more hours of sleep. Can not believe it, but it's actually light outside and I'm checking my email / PMs before heading out. Will have to catch up on the chatter after some sleep. Still thinking I'll head up to Beaver Dam on Sunday.

Oye, I'm tired, looking forward to a day off!

Depending on where you live..I probably could get you two pullets. They are chicks now about 5 weeks old and not on heat. A small cage inside your existing coop will protect them and keep them warm. During supervised excursions they will learn to get along fine.

Sounds like you need a nap for sure....take care of yourself.

I'll keep you in mind. I'm New Berlin so that would work. DD just has her heart set on a couple of fuzzies so I have to figure out if I can do that first. And with the weather now I think I'll wait because it's too cold for them to be outside. DH reminded me that last year this weekend was in the '70's. sigh.
