Ugh..

went out to the coop this morning and found one of my heavys on the nest with the duck. I thought it was so cute a duck and a chicken were co-nesting. I later took her off so the duck could get off since she is so large and was blocking the exit. Well the poor bird could not stand on one of her legs. She must have gotten knocked off the roost and decided to snuggle with the duck. I felt no injuries, but, decided to dispatch her. I hate a bird in pain. I am so glad I did. She had dislocated her hip. Made me ill to culler her. She was a nice young bird and one of the last of my heavy's. I only have two left now.

So sorry Vicki, but you did the right thing by not making her suffer longer.

R Berry........if you do build something of size you should have concrete...sounds like your DH knows what he is doing. Watch the concrete prices..... 25x18 should only run 1600 to 1700 tops in your area.

Yup after 30+ years of marriage DH has my number . . . nicely listens to my great ideas then sprinkles in doses of reality, I think that's call "green backs". He did offer me a decent sized coop with at least a small area for my supplies, that can be built with footings on a leveled out gravel pad. Anyway that's how I understood it. All I know is I get my doors, windows and ability to split the coop w/chicken wire to integrate flocks. WHEW now I will need to start looking for birds that are laying, I have more customers than chickens to supply them. I'm going to be looking for Delawares if anyone knows of any in the Madison area. Would like about a dozen.

I like clover if it is a sunny area, but that's just me.

Both batches of our meaties loved the clover. DH grew rye in seed starter flats this winter for the layers and they just loved that, we are going to plant some of each in last year's garden plot which is where this year's meaties will graze.

Thanks for prayers. Mom can still use them. She may be hospitalized through Mon now. They took 5 cultures from her knee to grow out Tues. only one has grown out enough to identify. The other 4 are to slow to identify. They don't know WHAT drugs to use on her until they know what they're dealing with. Apparently they put in a pic line near her heart to get the different antibiotics in faster. Hoping the good Lord puts some healing hands on her soon I tell you!

I had both of my knees replaced about five years ago - yes prayers are being sent your Mom's way, and yours.

I just wanted to check in quick- I'll have to read the rest of the posts later..
I bought a coop/run for the chicks to move into from FF. It's cute and should do the job. Hopefully I can put it together in the morning.
I picked up my eggs for a retry on my Easter hatch. Going to put them under my 2 broody hens later- crossing my fingers
I entered the hatch a long contest for natural egg photos, and my picture was one of the ones narrowed down for a vote. They chose 15 and then members voted on their favorites. I came no where near winning(I only got three votes) but exciting just the same!
And best of all for my day------I have a pip!!!!!!!!!!!

I had two eggs that I had set in the incubator late, and they are due to hatch tomorrow. I am soooo hoping it hatches!

I am in need of your opinions. Who here uses sand in their coop vs. pine shavings, etc? Which one do you like better? Why?
Trying to figure out my plans for my coop and I have read that sand is great and cheaper in the long run vs. the pine shavings. Also its not suppose to hold the moisture as much. True or false?
