All this news of animal abuse just ticks me right off. And here I am, dogless and starting to look for another pooch to rescue, and I'm afraid we'll get turned down because we don't have a fenced yard and our aging and ancient indoor cats aren't current on their vaxxes. Have you ever read some of the requirements by some of the rescue groups? Like they're looking for only perfect homes and good homes aren't good enough. We have a dog's paradise here: big yard, 3 acres of woods, pond, creek, and a cozy house to sleep in. And there are people who starve their animals to death and the enforcers drag their feet. Ugh.

I know! I feel the same way- I would love to rescue a cat, but I can't because they require you to keep the cat 100% inside, because that is their idea of humane. My idea of humane is a cat who can come and go as they please, hunt mice when they want, and see sunshine other than through a window, so we agree to disagree and I am looking for a cat on Craigslist...

Same with chicken rescues. I would love to rescue chickens, but because I sell eggs and raise meat chickens, and cull instead of paying hundreds of dollars in vet bills, no chicken rescue organization would let me, EVEN THOUGH my birds live in a secure clean coop, have three times the recommended space when they're confined to their run and are usually allowed to free range our 3 acres, get tons of high quality food and treats, and are treated with respect and dignity their entire lives.

Not to say I'd be the first to shoot a dog on my property, but I can understand the mentality. I remove opossum and skunks from my coops for chicken killing. Someone sitting there placing all the blame on the person shooting the dogs is certainly turning a blind eye to her own repeated inability to keep her dogs home. I'd be devastated and angry if my dog was shot chasing someone's livestock, but the most anger would be directed at myself for letting it happen.


Elderberries, huh? Hmmmm..... Sounds promising. I've got some sort of white berry bush in front of my house that the blue birds strip in a day or so in the fall. Great viewing for them. Not elderberries, though. I worry how well blackberries would do. We've got a couple brambles in the ditch by the mailbox, but they never get very far. The wild grape goes crazy, though. Tries to choke out my poor trees out front.


Had my very first turkeys hatch today! 3 of 4 shipped eggs, I'm pretty pleased. Both blue slates and one royal palm. Cuties. Here they are along with a little black chicken tutor. More tutors hatching by tomorrow, I hope.

Cute! Do you know how long it takes turkeys to feather out? I just got my very first turkey poults, and I was under the impression I was getting day olds, but they had half their wing feathers and a few tail feathers when I got them, so I thought it was just a turkey thing, but these poults obviously don't have any wing feathers!

I have not raised turkeys for 25 years. I killed them all by 5 days old so I pretty much don't know anything about them other than they are pretty dumb and will crawl in a waterer and drown themselves.

Our neighbor shot our potbelly pig and one of our dogs when I was a kid. The calves are being born this time of year, the last thing a farmer needs is a dog pestering his cattle. Shes lucky she's not getting sued instead.

Delisha, good piece of info on turkeys. I will keep that in mind. Do not put the Turkeys in with the ducklings.

Oh sorry BL4! Yes, the lamb was also very good! My neighbor stopped by and he is such a talker that I almost missed getting any of it! As it was I got one slice and the bone!

Good news! Lots of progress was made with that horse case today. The sheriff even had a vet come out and confirm the low body scores of them. It sounds liked they will be seized tomorrow. She may get charged with a felony.

GREAT! I'm glad something is happening to save the horses from more misery!

RE: shooting dogs. I always thought people could legally shoot dogs that were chasing deer or pestering livestock on their property. My hubs was chased by a small pack of dogs and they nearly got him when he leaped up into a tree. They held him up there for hours before they caught sight of a deer and ran it down (allowing him to escape!) We were always careful to keep our dogs under control so ours wouldn't be a problem for someone else and end up getting shot.

Amy.... I LOVE German Shepherds! We raised them when I was a kid.... Loved the dogs.... hated the work. We gave 1 pup a litter to the Guide Dog program. I think they are one of the best family dogs next to a mutt! Congrats on the eggs!

Elderberries.... the seed contains a small amount of cyanide. So do most fruit seeds and pits. The reason why they say toxic is because if you eat the berries it's almost certain you will eat the seeds. It takes pounds of seeds to reach a toxic level for most people and I've never seen a bird eat enough to reach toxic levels either! They make a nice Jam especially if you mix them with another fruit. The blossoms are tasty if dipped in an egg batter and fried. The dried blossoms and sometimes fruit are used in herbal medicine.

nice and foggy here but at least it isn't icy, Thanks for all the brooder advice, I am leaving in a few minutes. Gonna do a few stops before I pick up the chicks. I 'll post pictures tomorrow.

I have some chicks in the hatcher! chocolate orpingtons hooray! They are being the subject of 2nd sons science project. His hypothesis was there would be a better hate rate on homegrown eggs rather than shipped eggs. But right now, they are doing better than the home grown! I think my rooster may not be doing his thing...

Good Morning everyone. Not much going on here. I transfered the goslings and 2 ducklings to a bigger brooder, the geese are growing so fast and the ducks were making a mess in with the chicks and poults. I have my older 3 duckling still in my bathtub, and gosh they are STINKY! I have been cleaning the tun twice a day and its still bad. I really wish i could put them outside but they are nto feathered yet. Soon I'm going to have to seperate some of the chicks into another brooder, their all growing and running out of room. And here I thought I'd have the chicks delivered in April so they could go outside sooner lol.
I had a 4-H meeting last night and I guess all my poultry talk has two more families wanting chickens lol. We host club poultry meetings at my house once a month so I guess they'll be coming
I've got 7 roosters to pick up this weekend coming up, no idea what breed. We may keep one and butcher the rest. My current roosters are not doing their jobs, so I guess I need a different rooster. Oh and I went into lockdown this morning. Out of the 12 chicken eggs in the bator only 3 developed, and 1 is developed but I'm not usre if its a chicken egg or duck egg. My easter egger lays the same color eggs as my mallards so its hard to tell sometimes. Oh well I guess I'll see in a few days.
