Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good "shiny" morning all! Nice coating on everything this morning but it appears to be melting quickly

Great news about the horse lady!!! Hope they make an example of her. I am sure all the "noise" got the authorities moving.

As for the woman w/the dogs that were shot. Sounds a lot like to me she is more concerned with the possible trouble SHE might be in more than about her poor animals (and trying to pass the buck on her blame for what the outcome was). Wonder what story the authorities seem to be buying for why her dogs were running at large in the first place?

My poor hubby. I'm getting a way too serious case of cabin fever!!! I have already drawn up the plans for the coop remodel and last night I fed him his favorite spaghetti dinner, let him relax, and when he was all comfy, I looked at him with my sweetest smile and asked, "honey,

do you think it possible for ME to move the greenhouse closer to the coop?"
Poor hubby

Guess I better go make him his favorite breakfast too if I am going to get away with this one!!!

Well I let the crew out and just figured out why I have not seen many brown eggs the last 2 days....... They're being added to the eggs the silkies are sitting on, they now have 10 eggs under them. lol How does that work now, the silkies are 8 days into sitting on the original eggs. Does that mean they will stop to early for the brown eggs to hatch ?

Vicki ..you are funny..

Heather..how many chocolate eggs did you set? Do you have pictures of the parents?

I am all done hatching I think till the 25th. Only two of those BCM hatched. I eggtopsyed and those shells were so hard DH could not even drill a hole in them. All were infertile but two. All of my Orpington eggs hatched. I have 4 splash..they sure are throwing a lot of splash. Not the light blue splash either. It is the white with the splashes of black or blue. I think a few are going to look more mottled than splash.

any chance you marked the original eggs? You can pull the newer eggs..
the problem with what is going on is that she will stay on the nest to continuing hatching the new hatched chicks will die or she will leave the nest and the viable eggs will die. Block her off or mark the eggs so you can pull them daily.

Quote: I have no clue which eggs are the originals. I only seen them long enough to count them in the begining so of course I never marked them.
Why will the new hatched chicks die ? Also I have 2 silkies sitting together in the same box, will one get up when/if babies hatch and allow the other to stay on the extra eggs ?

You could candle the eggs to see which ones are developing, the new eggs will be clear. If the hen won't get off the nest, she can't show the babies food and they'll starve. I don't know if the 2 girls sitting will be able to work out an arrangement on their own.

The new hatched chicks need to get off the nest by day three to eat drink get sun and exercise. The hen should also. They need the exercise. Staying on the nest for extended periods is pretty hard on reserves for the hen. They need water and food and tend to eat and drink less when setting. The mom keeps them chicks tucked under for protection and they tend to eat less also when on the nest. You could put food and water directly in the nest if you have a way to do that. Co-nesting can work out. Sometimes the hens fight over chicks and kill them by accident. I like co-nesters. I would candle and give the more developed to one hen and the less developed to the other hen. Mark the eggs..they will switch eggs when one or the other is off.

Sunny and warm today

I'm cleaning out the coop. Taking lots of breaks, its a long wheelbarrow push to the garden.

Today is Pond Ice Out Day for 2013. My suspicions about my duck that disappeared in Jan were confirmed; she dove under the ice. I fished her out of the shallows. Poor gal.

Hey BBP, remember a while ago we were talking about replacement rings for the red and white waterers? I could use a few if you can get them. How much?

Hey everyone, It's been a while since I've posted here. We still havent gotten a single egg. Just started the bator today to try and hatch out some eggs from our neighbors flock. We also have 6 BR pullets, 6 RIR pullets, and 4 mixed goslings we ordered from farm & fleet that we are picking up on may 15th. Our filly is losing her winter coat like crazy. Anyone else not getting eggs? We probably need to install some lights in the coop. would be easier if the coop wasn't so far from the house.
