Hope I can get to sleep. Sometimes I can get it to go back if I lay right and fall asleep.
Night All!

Boy! Those free kittens & cat I got at the swap are sure gorging themselves on all the mice in the garage! I hope they don't 'starve' after the smorgasborg is gone! SHEESH! LOL!

Okay, so update on the adult hens I got at the swap. 3 of the 4 layed that evening sometime. On Sunday, none of them layed. Yesterday, the same 3 layed again and the 4th one still hasn't layed. I've heard that sometimes they'll take a break from laying if there are changes, but should I be worried if there's one stuck in her? If there's one IN her but just not layed yet, how long can it stay in there before it becomes a problem? Because chances are she probably already had one building up at the other person's house. Know what I mean? I think I'd feel less concerned if she dropped an egg that first day like the rest of them and then hasn't layed since. Or am I over thinking this?

All of the rest of my chicks are doing swell! DD16 named her Mottled Houdan "Horace". XD

When do roosters start to develop spurs? And is that something that ALL roos develop no matter what the breed? How come I never hear people talk about spurs? Like ever? I hear people talk about looking at their comb and wattle to start telling the sex, or to wait until they're 4+ mos old to see if they start to crow, but no one ever says to watch to see if spurs are coming in. But this whole comb & wattle thing throws me off b/c in some breeds the hens have them, too! So you can't always go by that. You'd think that'd be a quick, fast, and easy way to tell the sexes apart. Just sayin....

good morning,,

by the time a rooster gets spurs,, you will already know he is a rooster by some other means,, maybe, like he is already crowing ..

I have company coming at around 10AM

brother is coming about noon..

It is really wet outside,, must have rained hard during the night.. I heard one rumble of thunder before I went to sleep..

had a guinea hen serenade me awake at the bedroom window.. another escapee from the pen.

So then it doesn't start to develop until later? I didn't know that, that's why I was asking.

Another question I keep forgetting to ask about - Is it okay to trim their nails w/a dog nail clipper? How short should I go and is there a "quick" that will bleed if I go too far? The 4 hens I got have longer, twisted nails and it looks bad if not painful. Can't that cause problems with their feet? Cuz a couple toes actually look like they're starting to turn a bit, too. I can try to see if I can get a picture today or tomorrow. I've got to head out, I have an appt.

I never trimmed a chicken toe.. somebody else will have to field that one..

you mentioned something about egg bound chicken,, I wouldn't worry about that.. until I came onto byc, I never heard of a case of it.. plus a lot of other ailments .. too many people jump to the wrong diagnosis and can cause more harm than help.. projected hypercondria .. (sp)
just remember, not very many of us are vets,, so we should not be "doctoring" so much.. especially surgical things..

it is possible that all 4 of the chickens are laying, only not all on the same day..

.........

PP, go ahead and trim nails if it looks like they're causing a problem. I'd go slow so as not to catch the quick. Roos get spurs around a year. The light breed hens can also get spurs; I have 3yr old Polish hens with spurs. I wouldn't worry about the hen that hasn't laid yet. It may take her several weeks to adjust. Sometimes they stop laying for no reason ( I have a bunch of slackers here at the moment.)

Well, we decided to not go down to Baraboo with BL4 for Vernon's trial. I would have had to bring both kiddos as DH wouldn't be here to pick up the oldest from school. Will be watching very closely however!
