Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning folks,

frost here earlier, 29º at 5am

Jim easy on that glass imo,,,,,weight for one thing,,,,hail for another, and I doubt you will Annie to keep it clean,,,side walls not a bad idea esp if you could score some sliding doors,,,open for ventilation, screens to keep the birds/critters out

3 calls from tourist egg customers yesterday reserving eggs,,,,might have to supplement from the neighbor

just transferred a dozen duck eggs to the hatcher , snuck another 12 marans eggs under another broody last night

Morning everyone,
I agree with Unka on the weight thing, for what it's worth. My hubby built me a sunshed/workshop/potting shed at least 15+ years ago using the greenhouse panels from Menards and they are holding up just fine to years of heavy snow, hail and whatever else mother nature decided to throw at it. Other consideration is that greenhouse panels are really light. Menards has several different grades to choose from. That's what we will be using as a roof over part of the girls run too. If those things can stand up to our weather they can hold up to anybody's. BTW, your greenhouse is going to be what mine wants to be when it grows up!!!

Mid 20's here this morning, could have been worse. Got down near 20 around 2 am but bounced back up quickly. Everything that was covered looks fine minus a black leaf tip or two. Whew.

Lots of work to get done now so I need another cuppa!! Or two.

OOPS--FORGOT the roof was made of greenhouse panels. The north wall was solid and the rest mostly glass.

I am beat already...kids came at 5:45 this morning! Good think they went back to bed with me. Now breakfast is done and I have convinced them to watch a little television so I can get a couple cuppas down (and catch up with you all!) Then we will go outside and feed the outside critters...didnt see that baby goose last night; I hope nothing got him! I sure hope I have more hatch before we leave on Friday! Too bad about yours Jim; unfertile or what? I have two that are stuck to their nests and it has been too long...my barn is starting to smell like like rotten eggs!

Cuties has agreed to incubate some eggs for me...we are working out the particulars for next week. I am sad that I tossed all the marked eggs I was holding! I have a few dozen left...hey Jim or anyone, how long have you held eggs before you set them and still had success? That might be a good experiment too doncha think? I will have to check and see just how long I have had them down there.

Sunny but chilly here today. I dont think we got any of that frost that was predicted. I was a little worried cause my houseplants are outside...they look OK today though. This morning I was doing up the dishes and a hummingbird flew under the porch and tried out my hanging plant! It kind of startled me! THe kids thought it was pretty cool too.

Well, the energy around here seems to be boiling over...I guess it's time to get these kids outside! (even though I am NOT ready yet) I think I like the second shift better....

Later peeps--TerriO

(PS) cool about the turkeys Cind...my neighbor HATES my geese going on his pond and chases them with his car! What a weirdo.

I went to go check on my chicks and onebox has blood in it! WTH??!!! I grabbed every single one of them one by one and checked their anus's and full body check in case it was getting pecked. Even spread each wing. Nothing! I did some research and it seems like it's one of 3 things.
A) one's getting pecked on
B) coccidiosis
C) normal shedding of intestinal lining and not to be concerned about.

I even looked at a chicken poo chart w/pics and saw a few pics w/blood in them in the NORMAL POO category. At what point should I be concerned? How can I tell if it's shed lining or cocci? All of these were the ones I bought at the Ladysmith swap on May 11th and every single one came from the same lady. (This batch includes my last red crested red polish [the 2nd got ran over by the washing machine, remember?] my naked neck turken, and other special birdies). I've only had them a week plus and my chicks are seperated according to age and when I got them and from whom I got them just in case something like this were to happen. So there's no way they got it from a dif. batch of chicks or can spread it to them. They're in a cardboard box. Should I throw the whole box out and put them in a fresh one? I just roll up and throw away the newspaper, dump loose stuff out of the box, and lay fresh paper every few days. So it's not like they go a week and everything's all nasty in there.

I do not know what it could be. Want to tell you, when we got our very first chicks, one had a little blood in the stool. I also freaked! Called every person that knew anything about chicks. Was told sometimes it happens, and is k.
It cleared quickly, and everyone from that batch is 1 yr and thriving.
You are right to keep seperate. Good job. I would yes, get a new box if you have one handy.
Also, post everything you feed them. Im sure someone will have feed advice to give :) good luck!!
