Okay, I am ready to buy my first incubator! I will be getting it out of my paycheck this Friday, so I thought I'd post and ask a few questions and for opinions. I WAS going to get one out of my paycheck this LAST Friday, but my dog had developed something the vet told me is "wet eczema" and is due to allergies. So a couple hundred unexpected dollars later, and incubator needed to wait another week. Not a problem, as you have to take care of what you HAVE first, before trying to take care of what you MAY have in the future but is not yet in the works. Doggie's doing great, healing well, and she'll be just fine.

Anywhozit - these are the 2 I'm looking at:

and this:

Any thoughts?

Check out he prices at Cutler supply for the genesis hovabator. The newest model has humistat built in I believe. The best would be the brand that CC uses but I like my hovabators. They are styrafoam so that is the down side. Hard to clean and one of mine broke a corner off. I'm not the easiest on things. I ended up buying three of them so by the time I was done I could have gotten a used cabinet but I don't nee hundreds to hatch.... that's Jim's job !!
http://www.cutlersupply.com/

Here is the one like I have but it is the newer model. http://www.cutlersupply.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_24_28&products_id=213

What's nice about them is I had issues and I called the company and they sent me new parts because it was not that old. Cutlers was very nice to work with as well. I also bought the car adaptor (don't know where I put it lol) but that really comes in handy if you have a power outage or want to travel with your eggs. etc. At the time when I bought mine Cutlers was the most reasonable... haven't shopped around though lately..

Delisha - My three chicks are doing just great.

Judge - Glad it helped. I would agree with French Toast. Go take some riding lessons and hang out in the barn and learn. Then decide if you want a full size horse. I have been riding for a very long time and I still like to take lessons. It isn't just climb up and ride you know. There is a lot to it. I had also commented previously specifically regarding your mini...did you miss it?

BBP - This is the last thing I am going to say about this subject (unless you specifically ask) because I know from experience that people do whatever they want regardless of sound advice. The lady I talked about letting her horses out where the horse was killed and a car wrecked and people injured, let hers out for years and years before this happened. It only takes a minute for something bad to happen. I pray that it doesn't happen to you or your horses or some person driving by. Definitely not something I want to say I told you so about. Also, sending them to the trainer without knowing how to gain respect yourself is pretty much a waste of money. They will behave perfectly for the trainer and then come home and walk all over you. Horses are smart and know exactly what they can get away with with different people. It might actually improve their behavior for a short time, then right back where you started. Like French Toast said, the best way to get into horses is to get an nice old horse that is well broke and respectful to all people and not a rescue that needs all kinds of work. That's one reason so many horses wind up being un-wanted. Lack of knowledge and unrealistic expectations of owners make dangerous horses with bad habits. Also, it's good that your building a round pen. Learn all you can about the technique of "round penning," it isn't just chasing the horse in circles till it's exhausted. There are a lot of benefits to learning how to do it correctly and no benefits to doing it wrong besides getting energy out of them. If done properly it's a great way to gain respect. Honestly, every issue I have read that you've posted about your horse frustrations has been horses being horses and you doing things that encourage/cause/or gives them the opportunity them to act badly. Not trying to be overly critical here or anything, so please don't take it that way, just being straight up honest with you. Your not the only one by any means. So many new or just plain horse owners do the same exact stuff. They just didn't know... The offer still stands if you need help

. Oh, and try a plastic bag (like a grocery store bag) tied to the end of your whip on your gelding. Most horses think plastic Walmart bags are terrifying.

My langshan babies are out for their first time in the awesome chicken tractor that my husband built for me. They range from 5-3 weeks and they are having a blast eating grass and chasing bugs around. I put a nice dish of sand and gravel for them as well so they don't get clogged up from the grass. Hoping to see the really cool wild Merganser duck and her babies again today... I need a picture!!

Hope everyone has a nice day today and finishes getting those gardens in. It's so nice out! Me I'll be hoping they don't send me any work to do today

so I can get this house straightened,

Lisa

Edited to add the plastic bag...

My Farm Innovators works fine, but of course the temp and humidity sensors are inaccurate so I have to use digital thermometer and such to know what's going on with them. Definitely get the fan in whatever model you get, and egg turners are nice (as long as you don't unplug them by accident, don't notice for weeks, and kill your eggs like I did).

Hmm...good point about styrofoam ones being hard to clean. How WOULD you clean them? And yes, I'm specifcially looking forsomething w/a turner and a fan. The one has a digital thermostat as well as a digital monitor for the humidity as well. But if it's styrofoam, maybe I shouldn't? I've heard mixed reviews. 've heard some people say that they use them with success have decent to great hatch rates and I've also heard many people say NOT to get them b/c they're too inaccurate and they suck. I WAS going to get the hovabater genesis 1588 for around $200 but DH said to try to find something that's in the $100-150 price range.

I'm also hearing a lot of people saying to check craigslist and ebay, but buying used makes me nervous. Don't you have to worry about disease? Soap and bleach doesn't always kill 100% of all germs, bacteria, (or especially) viruses. That and what if there's something wrong with it or something's missing? Or what if they dropped it or it was dropped or mishandled during shipping and something goes wrong? Or am I just stressing myself out and am worrying too much?? LOL!

I clean mine with a sponge and diluted bleach. It works fine. I have had great hatch rates really. 7 out of 8, 5 of 5 and then 10 of 10. I am not counting my last one that was 4 of 9 because I had my turner unplugged for over half their incubation at least. All the chicks were stuck on the left side of the egg, lol. Surprised those 4 came out. The incubator I really want is the digital Sportsman, but it may be awhile before I can talk my husband into $700. Anyway, don't trust ANY gauges on a styrobator. And yes, you are worrying to much...

Otherwise watching an extra kiddo for the morning, going to the library to sign up for their reading program and then working on my garage since we have a garage sale coming up this weekend. It is polka fest and beer, bacon and cheese fest in new glarus so should be a bunch of people around. Lets hope they want my junk!
kristip: I hope your sale goes well, I'm going to try to stop by Saturday. A guy from work is retiring and we are hosting his party on the 22nd (about 30 people) so we're frantically working to get the main coop done, and move the girls from the mobile coop. This will give us our parking area back. Besides we need that mobile coop down in the pasture area and ready to brood the 150 meaties we'll be getting the first or second week of July. Oh it's going to be a fun summer!!
you are overthinking yourself.. a bantam needs only about a 12 inch x 12 inch space on the ground.. a milk crate is perfect.. you do not need coops for them after they hatch.. the mom will probably not go back to her nest once she hatches the chicks anyway.. It's only 3 eggs, go for it.. you have 3 weeks to build something in the mean time..
jvls1942: hmm - this is so tempting and I wouldn't mind a few more bantam Wyandottes . . . also I think there is someone in my area that has bantam Wyandottes and a roo in the flock, I could probably get a few fertilized eggs from him. Ok now the bigger question, do you have room for me and a bunch of chickens when hubby hears this idea I'm "hatching"???? We have that mobile coop you know. I can see it now . . . me driving the truck with the mobile coop in tow, the chickens looking out the windows, and a sign on the back that says "Wausau or Bust"

I'm sorry I forgot to say thank you! Normally I do lead him, but it was dark, and the pasture area is only about 30ft from there shelter so I just took him by the halter. He is an itty bitty mini, so only my 3 and 6yr old can go on him, but I guess that is out of the question now. I am just too scared. I love him, but he just gets moodier and moodier. I don't know if he is unhappy or if he just needs more one on one time? idk....
