So sad I went to the pond to look for the wild Merganser duck and her little babies that I saw yesterday and I found a small dead duck in the pond. I think it's her. It's small and female and has some meat missing. I think a coon or something must have got her last night. No sign of the little fuzzy's either.

I guess I should have netted the little guys...I know, probably not legal without a permit, but they would be alive today.

Judge - I think more 1 on 1 time. A friend helps. Horses get along great with goats...horses don't like to be alone.

Good afternoon! Got the day off...found out this morning that the kidoes are coming back tomorrow! I am glad that they are coming back but I was kinda hoping for a whole week off! She still hasnt said if they are staying or going for the summer...and she owes me $$$ too...lots. (and our checking account is overdrawn and the farrier hasnt cashed HIS check yet!)

SUre wish I had a money tree....

I never realized how much work a horse needs to be trained. I kind of thought you could just get on it and ride. Make sure he was fed,watered, pet, etc.

Yup--this is what many people that own horses think! I loved all your comments Lisa and Frenchie! The very best thing we did when my daughter was young (I got my first horse purchased off of a trail string when I was 34) was to enroll her in Pony Club. That was a fantastic experience for her and I could not believe all the stuff we BOTH learned! SHe is definitely the "Horse Whisperer" in the family but at least she can help me when I need it! BBP--you have to think of training like you do with a dog...you AND the dog go and learn together. There is probably someone that would come to your place and train you guys. (or use Lisa's fantastic offer!) I have to agree with loose horses too. I didnt realize that they were LOOSE and going down to the river/pond/what ever you said! Mine have gotten out two or three times when we have had a fence malfunction and they go INSANE! I dont know what it is about being loose but it doesnt agree with them for sure!

Oh...this is very sad! Sometimes I wish there was no such thing as raccoons. Are they good for something? (I dont know what except for maybe hats!)
My break is over...back to the garden. It was supposed to rain yesterday...NOPE. I think I need to water!

Judge - Glad it helped.  I would agree with French Toast.  Go take some riding lessons and hang out in the barn and learn.  Then decide if you want a full size horse.  I have been riding for a very long time and I still like to take lessons.  It isn't just climb up and ride you know.  There is a lot to it.  I had also commented previously specifically regarding your mini...did you miss it?

BBP - This is the last thing I am going to say about this subject (unless you specifically ask) because I know from experience that people do whatever they want regardless of sound advice.  The lady I talked about letting her horses out where the horse was killed and a car wrecked and people injured, let hers out for years and years before this happened.  It only takes a minute for something bad to happen.  I pray that it doesn't happen to you or your horses or some person driving by.  Definitely not something I want to say I told you so about.  Also, sending them to the trainer without knowing how to gain respect yourself is pretty much a waste of money.  They will behave perfectly for the trainer and then come home and walk all over you.  Horses are smart and know exactly what they can get away with with different people.  It might actually improve their behavior for a short time, then right back where you started.   Like French Toast said, the best way to get into horses is to get an nice old horse that is well broke and respectful to all people and not a rescue that needs all kinds of work.  That's one reason so many horses wind up being un-wanted.  Lack of knowledge and unrealistic expectations of owners make dangerous horses with bad habits.  Also, it's good that your building a round pen.  Learn all you can about the technique of "round penning," it isn't just chasing the horse in circles till it's exhausted.  There are a lot of benefits to learning how to do it correctly and no benefits to doing it wrong besides getting energy out of them.  If done properly it's a great way to gain respect.   Honestly, every issue I have read that you've posted about your horse frustrations has been horses being horses and you doing things that encourage/cause/or gives them the opportunity them to act badly.  Not trying to be overly critical here or anything, so please don't take it that way, just being straight up honest with you.  Your not the only one by any means.  So many new or just plain  horse owners do the same exact stuff.  They just didn't know... The offer still stands if you need help .  Oh, and try a plastic bag (like a grocery store bag) tied to the end of your whip

I've tried the plastic bag trick. He doesn't mind it. And I do have a dead broke old mare. The only issue with her is stubborness on occassion. Otherwise she's very respectful. When the filly goes to training I will be there to learn how to do groundwork with her on my own. But this gelding is part saddlebred and can be very high strung and much too curious. So he will get sold and the girls will stay. And they will continue to mow my lawn.

Not sure if I mentioned it but I have been motivated (partially because of comments on here) to try a wheat free diet. It is day 3 and I'm doing ok, but its amazing how much we rely on products with wheat in them! I did make a delicious wheat free rhubarb crisp the other night. And I made more tonight:

ok, got the call from my docs office. geez they said i have upper respitory resistance syndrome.....can be the reason for my fatigue but i couldnt find anything online saying it would cause shortness of breath during the day or my cough with phelm....sorry that sounds gross...
nurse said my doctor never heard of it himself!!! i was told ponce that i never do anything by the book.....guess not.
they wanted me to see pulm doc in milw....i said ill go to ets pulm that treated him for his sarcoidosis in his lungs.
wonder if the radiation i had could have done something? or having birds for 20 years and now chickens??? dont think they put 2 n 2 together sometimes!
said i need a cpap but i dont have apnea!!!

That sounds awful Frenchtoast! I haven't heard of that syndrome, but I do know they prescribe cpaps even if you don't have apnea. It just insures that you get plenty of oxygen while you're sleeping. Even if you don't stop breathing, which is what apnea is. Apparently I wake myself up a million times in the night, but keep breathing and they suggested one for me. I didn't get it cuz I have a thing about looking like an X-Wing fighter from Star Wars when I sleep, but my husband has one and he LOVES it. Even puts it on if he takes a nap.

Shortness of breath is tetrrible to live with. I had bronchitis once and after 3 weeks if not being able to catch my breath I finally went in. I couldn't imagine having problems breathing all of the time. I hope they can do something for you FT.
