Good morning all
Congrats on the hatch! That is always so exciting :)
I had a few questions if anyone can help-
First- I have a closed flock, so they will all be related. Does that matter? Can siblings, or father/daughter create chicks or will they be deformed? How many generations can breed before there is a problem?
And- yesterday I found my EE, who hasn't laid her first egg yet, sitting on a clutch of eggs. She was all puffed up, and growled at me when I tried to move her. She couldn't be broody yet right? I mean she hasn't even laid yet! I don't know why my chickens want to be broody all the time....

been super busy, trying to keep up with posts, but phone keeps backing out of the screen. finally got online on the puter and spent WAY too much time here already.... easy to do. :(
finally got a batch of strawberry jam made last night. DS2 helped mash all the berries, had a blast with it of course. they enjoyed 'Jammin Biscuits' for breakfast! ;)
got company coming again this afternoon.... housework to do, food to cook and kids to play with to get them from ruining their little eyes with too much dang TV. Why can't the great outdoors be the biggest lure to them??

SO thankful the rain has finally stopped, the river is the highest it's ever been, but the roads around me are open again at least.

I suppose I should motivate...... getting dressed might be a good thing to do. See Frenchie, I DO relax sometimes...... I woke up at 8:30 this morning!

I should make some strawberry jam today. I have an overabundance of berries in my freezer now and no jam in the house.

Nothing else to report here. Beautiful day though! Everyone enjoy it!
 
Good morning! Wow--after getting up at 7 to let the dogs out I went back to sleep and woke up at 9:20!!! Guess I have been working way too hard...
I must still have sleep in my brain...I cant remember what I read at all! BL--I will have to look up Hartman Creek again and check out the trails there. I know it is a beautiful park...maybe I could find a couple button quail hiding on the trail?

That is good news that ALL her broodies arent Langshans H&R! That is why I got away from the Orpingtons a few years back...I had two buff Orps and they didnt seem to lay eggs...just be broody and steal everyone else's eggs!

That will answer your question too Judge...I think they do go broody before laying if they have enough of that gene in them! I find that most of my cross breeds will brood at the drop of a hat. I try to pick up eggs a few times a day so they dont get the idea to sit on them! It happens really easily if they see that favorite nest with 10 eggs in it!
You can go for a pretty long time with a closed flock Judge...especially if the breeds you have have a deep gene pool. If you had rare breeds you might have problems after a few years...

Guess I better get outside and feed. DDs stayed at the dogsitting job last night so she isnt home to feed the horses. Speaking of...she put her Spanish Mustang up for sale! She is the mother of the one in the pic with the ribbons that I put up the other day. I never thought she would sell her but she really doesnt have enough time to work her like she needs. She would be a fantastic gaming pony! She is so quick.

I forgot to close my one coop up last night. All I have noticed that is missing is my hen call duck. The one that was national champion and going through a sex change. I'm very fortunate that a mink didn't come through.

Thanks Terri. I don't know if I have a deep gene pool. I don't think red and black stars do, maybe the BR and the chanteclers? Also all my mutts... Oh well- if I start to see that my chicks are acting a little "different" I will know that its time to stop inbreeding
 
No, she was a gray. Maybe the drake I bought with her will breed with my other hens next year. He was only interested in her/it. I still have the snowy, but am probably going to give her to a friend. I want to make room for some pastels.
