Oh no, bbl, very sorry to hear about your little ones!

We picked up three 6 day old Silkie chicks on the 25th..

The middle chick didn't make it, but the black and white are doing very well.
The black one is named Batman (my sister thought bantam was pronounced batman LOL) and the white one is Super Chick.

Today we picked up 8 more chicks ~ 4 Ameraucana, 2 RIR, 1 barred rock and 1 red laced orpington, I think.
They are about a week old.


Here are the 10 chickies together.. a couple of the newbies were picking on the Silkies, but they seemed to all get along after a half hour together.




My kids picked out three to raise at our house. We stopped at F&F and petco for supplies. I read a thread on here about using sand and reduced smell, so we're trying it out. I sawed off parts of a broken baby gate to make a roost, and a lid. We have 3 indoor cats, so far they've not been too interested, but I'll be drilling a hole in each corner and tying the gate/lid on to make sure they cannot get at the babies!






Heat lamp, temp at 90 degrees, waterer, feeder, roost.

Am I missing anything important?? I want this little ones to thrive!

CC I was going to hire you to be the doorman on wheels. Yeah, you might get cold, but aren't my chickens worth it???

Vivk... Just let those chickens work it out. Noodle will terrorize them for a bit, but that's how pecking order goes. She's not going to kill any of them. You're just putting off the inevitable. And noodle might get so nasty and sneaky about it, she might really kick some @ss when she finally gets a chance too. So turn off cameras, or plug our ears, walk away quickly, and tell your hubby not to let you anywhere near the coop for the night. Then have a drink.

Unfortunately, the strongest drink I'm allowed is coffee, well not exactly. I told my oncologist I was OK with giving up the alcohol, never was much of a drinker anyway, (2 wine coolers and I was looking for a corner to curl up in) but they were prying my coffee cup from my COLD DEAD HANDS!!!

Anyway, giving Noodle a time out has worked to give her an attitude adjustment before. She really is like a spoiled toddler. (Did you see that recent study on the IQ level of chickens ?) Anyway, I have just been watching them all day on the sly and things look pretty good so far.

me again, I was answering page by page or else I forget ..

I got the rest of the purlins in this morning.. I only have the south end section to do.. they are special cut sizes.. I even got the angle brace in on the north end.. Annie helped me by handing me boards and tools so I didn't have to crawl up and down the ladder so often..

I set a whole tray of eggs for myself last night.. 3 peacock, 21 guinea and 24 Delaware..

today Marlene brought me 35 guineas,, I have them set already, too..

when it cools off, I am going to plant a few more peppers and some brussels sprouts into the green house.. then I have a few onions and millet to put in someplace.. Most of the replanted garden is coming up.. corn will not be knee high by the 4th of July , this year.. that's OK,, the later corn is sweeter ..

If no rain in the forecast, I will water plants tonight..

That's a lot of eggs! I'd love to try out incubating sometime. Maybe next spring will have to see how we do with all these chicks first!

Our 3 are doing great. The chubby white one found a little stick that my daughter slipped into the brooder. She was playing in the sand like it was a shovel, and the other 2 chicks wanted a turn. They were running circles, going under and over the roost, trying to get the stick. So cute. Of course when I put in two more tiny sticks, they all lost interest and went to sleep.

I brought them outside and put them in the grass for the first time. Just for 15ish minutes. They seemed to enjoy pecking at the grass

What a day. Got the new chicken run built, they sure are happy and now to finish their coop. It looks quite shabby right as it was our greenhouse and I stole it from my daughter for chickens as she moving out next month for her 2nd year at college.. This is for my newer chickens im keeping on a different area on my property. Was told that if I built north of old pens I have a better chance of not infecting them. Also im the only one who goes in the coop. My daughter only goes in old coop. Also got a good portion of my daughters new coop built. Just have to finish a small part above window, put chicken door, roosts and nesting boxes and build her run. She's only going to have about 6 chickens in there. Oh also have to build the window boxes as she painting it all up cute. Just used salvaged wood I had laying around.
Had a ruff day though. First thing this am while putting the last of wire on my run I smashed my index finger hammering those tiny fence staples. Nails surely going to fall off. They had the deal of the day at Ace for a $149.00 portable aide nailer/stapler for $20 so off I went no more smashed fingers. I even bought 2 for that price. Then mid day while building door on daughters coop I was nailing with my air framer nailer and the nail bent while going in right into my middle finger and could feel it hit the bone. Cold water and a bandade and was back to work. Then this evening I went to walk around the coop and hit the eave with my head and fell to the ground. Felt like such a klutz today. Figured it was time to call it a day.

Delisha- I see you post alot on the Blue Laced Red topic and it seems your quite knowledgeable on them. I purchased a breeding pair a bit ago and wondering how bad my rooster looks. The hen is currently molting so ill wait to share her photos. ANY comments are welcome.

I also wanted to say that by not always commenting on posts doesn't mean im being rude. Im on here on my phone and its very hard to post just what I have to say. It took me the past half hour just to do the last 2 posts with photos as it won't show the text box correctly. Love all the photos you are sharing.
Yvette did your babies make it home by chance? Im not all that far away if you need help looking for them.

chkn scrtch, how do you go about burning out a stump? I tried it last year and the stump hardly got charred.. I am thinking I should drill a bunch of holes into it and fill them with oil and get that to burning ?

Neat trick, turning yourself into a horse.. I was hitch hiking one time and I got picked up by a witch.. I know she was a witch, because we drove only a short distance when she turned into a motel..

As far as burning stumps, I bet my mom could do it. Kerosine is her best friend when she is up north burning leaves or brush. The neighbor is always afraid she is going to burn the woods down.

How old is he?
I like his comb. His upper chest is really good and with age might fill in a bit more on the lower chest wall. They need a deep round chest. His leg color is good. His neck feathers are a bit brassy. His tail is a bit too high, and likely has a narrow rear. I like his wing placement. His is really nice to see. Too many of them are too low. His is really nice and tight too. I would like to see some of his off spring. He has a lot going for him. Not show quality, but as a producer he has some good traits he could pass down with a hen that complements other needed components. I bet he would do well with a black hen. Deepen that color a bit and remove the yellow, lower that tail a bit, and widen the rear. Look for a few round balls, dark young pullets with a nice hard tents to add to your pair. Looking forward to seeing the hen.
