Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Deli- I do not have any type of fruit tree unfortunately, but I was referring to TO's comment/offer on her full pear trees. What type of crab apple do you have? There is a kind that is used for fruit preserves and a kind that is too small (my mom has that kind). I think that bird pic looks like a peahen in the face/head plus it has an extremely extended tail.

Del- here is a question for ya....if the cross beak is suspected to have been created by high hatch heat, wouldn't it stand to reason that the effected birds would not pass that trait on to their offspring? I'm REALLY curious!

I have a crab tree that is supposed to be excellent for jelly. I can't remember what its called though. Liset maybe? I need to look into that and maybe actually make some jelly.
Someone posted a really cool link on deformities in chicks. It said that crossbeak is caused by genetics.

TO- I wish I would have bought turkeys from you at the bash. I love the two I have and yours seemed like they were going to turn out so pretty. I know my royal palm is a tom. I'm really hoping the bourbon red is a hen. If its not, I'll have to track down a hen before spring. Thanks for the info on your sheep. I really wish I could just get more goats, but they would just eat the bark off of my trees. And even if I put fences around the trunks, they'll be up on their hind legs trying to reach whatever they can, and push my little apple, cherry and plum trees over. Right now I deal with the horses just plain plowing them down. They took down a honeycrisp the other day. That leaves me with 1. I used to have 7. Between pests (underground), kids on ATVs and horses, I have lost 6! All my other types of apple trees are doing great though. Especially the fireside. Maybe next year I'll get half a dozen Cortlands. They are my favorite but somehow I don't have any planted. I have: Macintosh, fireside, Zestar, snowsweet, honeygold, honeycrisp . . . I think that's it. Definitely need cortland and haralson. My chickens are probably mad, I'm an hour and a half late letting them out! Better get my butt out of bed.

Does anyone still have Wolf River apple trees? My grandama loved them. Huge fruit, great for pie.

LL
anyone know what these are?
I cannot make out the head detail.. and the picture will not enlarge for me..

I would say turkey ,, If they had a tuft of about 4 dainty feathers on their heads, then they would be peacocks or peahens..

here I am, online,, I should be out staking the rest of my tomatoes..
well, I had to have my cuppa , so that is my story and I'm sticking to it..

Hard maple is the preferred tree for tapping.. you can tap other trees,, but if it were me, I would not mix the sap.. I have heard of birch syrup ,, almost had a chance to try it, but didn't .. the guy didn't produce ..

not much else happening..

TerriO, I will take pictures of the hanging tomatoes.. they are not as tall as Unka Dan's .. but I am just a mere amature, who can't even spell amiture .. amatuer ,, HeII with it..

maybe this fall I can find my way south for pears .. I would like to make a nice big batch of that pear jam..

I forgot, I also have 2 kickapoo spice trees. They are actually my favorite. I even put one in my front yard. I think I'll put in a wholesale order for 40 apple trees for next spring. I'm going to look into the Wolf River also.

BBP, we planted a Haralson the first year here and it is a great producer, every year it has at least some apples. This year it is loaded. Our Granny Smith, not so much. Last fall we added a Winesap, and this spring planted an Akero and Chenango Strawberry. JJ, if you want a Wolf River, Maple Valley Orchard in Gillett has them, and maybe Wolfrath's in Hortonville too.

Watermelon is heavy, pushing on my sternum, and kicking organs. I am carrying just like Cartman did, other than that no instincts on this one. How about just healthy and earthside soon?

Good late morning! DH is very talkative this morning and it took took me FOREVER to get through the posts! [he is STILL talking] I wish he would go outside! LOL! I have to do that too...oh good he is going! He got the part to the pressure washer in the mail this week so he is getting that put back together. I gave him a list of stuff he can try it out on!

We always had the kind that were very little--we used them to write on the sidewalk--that made Mom mad!

THey were the size of marbles. I always loved the spiced crab apples in the jar! I cant remember what my peahen babies looked like--maybe I will go to my friends' place and look at theirs--I dont see that little nub on the head that turkeys have.

TO-my dad is also the energizer bunny! It is not gonna help that he will want to micromanage because he will be bored initially. The man is 70, retired, has lived alone for 26 years....oy vey!!!! Please pray for my sanity

Is anyone else seeing random wilting on their tomatoes? I've checked them, mind you it is not all of them, but they do not have pest damage, fungus, Vert. virus, plenty of water, etc. I think that the inconsistent weather has rendered them unable to adapt to temperature swings. We have been up into the 90s then down into the 50s all in a 24 hr period. The ones that are effected are all heirlooms however, which could mean that they haven't been modified to withstand temp swings

Any other ideas are welcome!
That was my first thought that it was Verticulum Wilt. WHat does the F stand for of the hybrids Dan? I should KNOW this! Maybe that is it? I dont think temp swings would do that unless we were getting down to the 30s!
My ameras are honking, one of my blk orps is constantly talking loudly, my husband is ready to kill off some loud birds, and I just wish they'd all settle down! One positive is that my roos aren't crowing...yet.

IT wouldnt get passed down if it was caused by heat but I dont think incubation temps cause crossbeak. I have heard of it causing curled toes and such but not crossbeak--now I am curious about THAT!
So many questions in your post! (no wonder some get missed eh Vicki? LOL)
I'm doing some research on tapping maple trees and the first question is those of you that tap, do you use metal or plastic buckets?
I use plastic (for my one time so far) because that is what JJ gave me! I think you can use whatever you have. On the one tree after I got some taps from H&R I used milk jugs. They worked great but filled very fast. I had no problem when I switched out the big buckets on that "fast" tree and put the jugs on the "slow" tree. I tapped silver maples for my syrup cause that is what I have. It did take a long time to boil down...
Amy... How's the watermelon? Extra large yet? Any inklings on pink or blue?
HaHa--this made me laugh! I am betting that AMy is very glad this summer hasnt been way hot and dry like last year! There is still time yet though-

OK--Now I MUST get outside! BBP--my chickens will be shocked cause I am an hour EARLY! But the coffee pot is empty so no point in staying in here! The turkeys I brought home from the bash are turning into cool looking birds for sure. There is one dark grey one that is just the friendliest thing! He/she might be staying!

Have a great day! TerriO

Arrrggghhh,

Two attempts now trying to fill you all in on our Pontoon boat saga........ aka as the Pontoon sinks !!!!!!! Here is a link to something that I found that highlights what our family just experienced.... scared the living crap out of all of us !!! http://forums.iboats.com/pontoons/new-pontoon-owner-did-almost-sink-565952.html I'm going to the lake now to maybe do some swimming with baby Addie. They're going home tomorrow

Not sure if we're going to be doing much boating... ET managed to lose the key to the pontoon boat and we found a key that kinda works but don't want to get stranded out in the middle of the lake.

Just venting but sometimes I wish ............ ARRRGGGHHHHH !!!! Let's just put it this way..... somehow it's MY FAULT !!!!
