Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

"Any ideas on how to deal with these 2 separate issues???"

Issue #1 "cornrows"

issue #2 "cornfields"

maybe the girls aren't laying because 1 they were sick, 2 they went through treatment, 3 you changed the program there with no water/feed in the coop,4 you had cleanup day with all kinds of activity,,,AND 5 you changed the feed

toss in the heat wave and poof,,,,there went your eggs

I know my production is at rock bottom right now just from the heat.

as to the nest box poop scandal,,,,yes you can close them off at night somebody must be roosting in them,,,most likely the last birds you turned into the general population

and then again maybe you do have hidden nests, maybe you will have a huge group of mutts showing up cute as can be with a mom or two

CORRECTION

I realized I may have mislead some of the newbies, so first let me apologize.
Now, when I said chickens like to play in water, I was correct, but what I failed to add was that they should not be allowed to go into water deeper than they can comfortably wade in because even though they can swim, if their feathers get completely wet they become waterlogged and can drown. Their feathers lack the natural oil protection of ducks and other water fowl (before someone asks).

Now, my girls are not so thrilled with their large, black rubber "swimming pool" anymore!!! Realizing this is , hopefully, going to be the last hot day for a while, I decided to take advantage of it and make it baby's first bath and big chicken butt wash day and there sat the perfect tub of warm water all ready all filled up and waiting! By the time I got done with the babies (the now 14 week olds) I wasn't sure who bathed who! :cd :gig. At least the girls were a bit more cooperative, mostly anyway, and as far as I could tell thru the flapping wings and flying water everyone appeared to be pest free. I just let everyone "blow dry" in the wind, including me

I went outside later to dump the "pool" and rinse it out. As soon as I touched the tub everybody broke into a run and disappeared around the corner of the workshop!!! :lau. Silly chooks.

It so happens it was at my pelvic exam last year where my Dr said "you are obviously over 30 and could braid corn rows down here"...

Obviously JJ has been up my butt longer than I knew and he just let it be known with the exact verbage from my physical last year...
My mind's eye just went blind!

Jj started it. Blame him. :-D

BTw CC..... I just had 2 LAVs hatch!!!!!! I gave up on the eggs but put them in the Brinsea. One was hatched this morning and one just hatched now and it's fricken HUGE!!!!!! They're still wet (never dry well in the Brinsea) but they have that dark wet Lav look!

FFFF to all....went with suzie and jennie after the gills. We planned on going early but the short storm with lightning slowed the start down to 9am....we fished til 11am and ended up with 24 keeper bluegills....just got them cleaned after they sat in a pile of ice for awhile....half for the fry tonight and the other half in the freezer for future use...gotta love fresh fish!

Tons of garden work to do...sounds like we have workin weather coming....

Again..problems with the deep litter method is the moisture if you don't add enough litter....I don't use it and don't promote it's use...close eye with waterers washed often...daily here with soap when refilled...works best for my flock, and clean coops really does create a healthy environment for the flock leading to and keeping the healthy flock in the future....we all know the lb of prevent is worth a ton of cure.

Off to set up the outside fish cooker....it makes the best ho-made fries.

just a quick note here , and then I have to go see why one of the new arrivals won't shut up.. or whomever it is..

how come on the days when I stay at home and check in here often, there might be a half dozen posts.. but today, when I was gone until about a half hour ago, or however long ago I started reading over 30 posts,, you get the idea....

Annie added 3 more keets to the TV, and I just checked and there looks like about 5 or six more..
I like it when the hatches go fast and furious.. I have to switch the keets to the larger TV.. there are already 25 in that small tank.. they are crawling over each other,, almost..

before tonight, I will set up the big brooder in the guinea pen and move all the babies out there..

BigZ, you have to keep that many gills for a meal ?? how many people are you feeding anyhow ?

we usually allow one, maybe two gills per person..
all we keep are the ones that measure 2 1/2 to 3 inches..
how do you measure yours ?? we measure them from eye to eye ..
