Jim- I know you don't hear this enough, your blanching and freezing method is 100% correct

Irish - that is a great method we use it for cooking to eat on the cob. Blanching is different. JJust stops the bacteria and ripening process.

To - check your pms or your pm's or your pm s

RBChicks- Brennans is a complete rip off. 9 dollars for a watermelon. the sales guy said "it's the best melon you've ever had" I replied " I will NEVER know if that is true"

Here's a crappy news flash.

I go out and let my birds out of their 2 pens and the cukoo maran roo and wheaten am roo imediately go at it. They have been together before and the marans always ran away.

Not today, and it turns out it was a bad idea. in no time at all he was on the ground crying out with a broken neck. I had no idea it could happen that fast.

warming the blanching water up for rooster plucking.

Cind - he was a golden cukoo. let me know if you want the feathers and which ones.

thanks JJ, a pat on the back is nice.. this method has worked for us for over 45 years.. and we have always had good corn.. the type of corn has a lot to do with the goodness, frozen or corn on the cob.. we use Serendipity from Jung,, we have had other good ones in the past, .
we like the white and yellow varieties,, but stumbled upon Serendipity just about 4 years ago.. It is out all time favorite.. the ears are not huge, but adequate ,,

I like your answer about the watermelon, I miss those old time melons that were too big for a kid to lift.. full of seeds, but sooo sweet ..

when I worked nights at a truck stop gas station, a trucker stopped for something to eat..
he told me that I could go into the back of his truck and take as many watermelons as I wanted. it was the bottom layer and he was going to just throw them away anyhow.. I sorted through the straw and found many that were not even cracked.. I had a Volkswagon beetle.
I literally filled that car up.. there was no room for anybody but the driver.. I must have had at least 30 of them,, I don't remember .. the whole neighborhood had melons,, we ate them for just about every meal and snacks for a week or more.. It worked out perfectly for Annie,, she was PG with our twins that summer and she craved watermelon,,

I would have needed a KFC driver to stop here while my wife was PG. Now she can't drive by one without feeling ill.

how long does a chicken need to be on ice to tender up ?
The rule here is do not eat the chicken within 24 hours.. I guess that comes from the fact that rogor sets in,, and then after an (unknown to me) amount of time, the rigor leaves.. the tenderness of a tough bird comes with long hours of cooking at a low temp.. I think Annie does the roosters for about 5 hours at 200 F .. just in case.. most of our roosters are over a year old when we whack them..

younger birds can be roasted for a shorter period..

any high protein meat should be cooked slowly .. High heat makes the lean meat tough..

My husband started a marketing business and no longer wanted to work on the tree farm. The majority of our business was transplanting B&B Evergreens. I couldn't do it on my own and didn't trust hired help. We made good money doing it though.

Oh okay just wondering if it was still a good idea to do, but it seems like it is a good idea. thank you

Jim, I actually want to THANK you for posting pictures!! The bumble foot picture was grossing me out and it was just sitting in the corner staring at me foreverrrrrrrr. Now we have the guinea on a nest as the last picture posted. Much better!

That guinea looks ghostly to me! It's too bad you have to live 5000 miles away, I could get some keets to keep my lonely chick company. I do feel bad for him. But I don't hardly have time to go #2 without a kid or therapist or someone needing me. Let alone to drive up Nort. Don't you have another puppy coming into the Madison airport Or something? I could let you stop here for coffee, potty, and a bit of food (oh and you'd have a few keets along for the ride) ... :D

Just finishing lunch and thought I'd hop back out to see what's happening
If you have guinea pigs,, they just love the silk.. and so to the geese and chickens..
Hmm . . . learn something new every day, I didn't know the chickens like the silk - gonna give it a try. Thanks
some pictures to back up my stories..

I walked down just to get a picture of her on the nest.. she was off of it and was just getting back on as I walked up..

these pictures were taken only seconds apart.. In another two seconds we wouldn't have seen any of the eggs.. as it is, you can see just over half of her eggs

the bottom edge is the edge of the walking path.. the right edge of the picture is where the dog makes his rounds..
Wow that's a nice clutch of eggs she has there, is she nested up against a fence or is she on a bunch of chicken wire? Either way, with the dog and all that wire, I agree she should be relatively safe.

Yeah I agree it is a rip off, but they were the only place I knew to get large quantities. The ones you get are they nice sized berries and where do you get them? I know you are down in the Evansville area. Is this store closer to Janesville, Monroe, or ???? So sorry to hear about your roo. It's bad enough it happened, but to have seen it had to be awful. I was going to offer you one of my Delaware roos, but then read your runon sign off and it looks like you were looking to limit your roo population. So I will be looking to sell them once I figure out how many there are.
