Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning everyone.
So sorry to hear of the losses
Sclark- wow beautiful pictures!
You guys are all so funny about the picture I posted. Jim- I would be delighted to go out on the town with you. Too bad we live so far apart
wink.png

Yesterday I became a great aunt. I feel so old. Maybe because all my great aunts seemed like they were always old. We now have five generations in our family, which I think is pretty cool!
The chickens and goats and pony are doing great. Our one young rooster that was spared from the freezer is doing well too. I thought he would act up once it was just him and Colt, but Colt is showing him how to stay in line. It is funny though- it seems like Steve (thats what DS9 named the young roo) is recruiting some of the girls to follow him. Colt gets so mad!
Anyhow- did a lot of pickling yesterday. More today if I get the ambition. My dad went to pick apples, so I suppose applesauce will be soon.

Hope you all have a great day! More storms though maybe?

You sure are a ladies man....I'll never forget the attention a very young PG girl was giving Jim at the swap in Elcho two years ago. Remember that Jim !!! She was one little flirt hey ? LOL Shaking my head again.... You got what they like Jim !!! LOL

Angiebuds, so sorry you had to put Laddle down. (Hope I spelled that right). Is that the one you were treating for parasites and E Coli?
I finally got my pool up one week ago on Sunday... the next day I had a heart catherization and they told me I could not use the pool or that baths for 2 weeks !!! (Yes Heather I can shower) LOL Today is day number 8..... ET has the deck 90% finished which will make it easier for me to get out since I can't climb the ladder...not sure I would even want to if I had two legs.... Betcha lot of accidents with those skimpy ladders ?? LOL Our saltwater/Ozone pump is working wonderful. It's still on the Boost phase. Then I'll do a test and ad the stabilizer. No Algae yet. I've got my blowup/mesh lounger all ready to go !!!! Oh wait, I bought the pool to exercise in !!!! Oops, but I'm not returning it...I'll need to take a break now and then anyway !!

Clark, nice pictures. I thought your flock did test positive with MG from the state vet? Glad to hear that it wasn't.

Cindlady.... If you read up on Mareks disease you will notice that the Mareks vaccine is made from the live Mareks strain that turkeys get. It does not affect Turkeys the same way it does for chickens. They actually say raising chickens with turkeys can help protect the chickens from Mareks. The problem is that turkeys can get blackhead from chickens. And it is a myth that the Mareks vaccine will cause Mareks disease. It is not the same virus. If you develop Mareks in a vaccinated bird just means the virus took hold in their system before the vaccine did. It's a race as to what takes hold first. You can still have Mareks in your flock and never have symptoms because all the vaccine does is prevent the tumors from developing which is what causes the lamness etc. They can still be carriers of the disease.
It can survive for years on your property even with no chickens. If you talk to enough veterinarians they will tell you that the virus is everywhere. So even if you order vaccinated chicks and don't separate them away from any contaminated site or flock they can still get the full blown Mareks.
There are tons of good posts here on BYC about Mareks. One good thing is that it is not transferred through the egg like some other diseases can. No one can guarantee that their flock isn't a carrier of this dreaded disease.
The sad part is (IMHO) that most people that order chicks from the hatchery are to cheep to get the chicks vaccinated for it. Small price to pay for some insurance IMHO. Just sayin

I know of a few people that know that they have Mareks and don't care who they sell their birds to. They are both in the show circuit and one even has swaps at her home. It is not anyone on BYC so don't get your undies in a bundle anyone !
That is one good reason to not bring home second hand birds or attend the Swaps. You can ask people if they've ever lost a bird to Mareks and most of them won't know wth you are talking about !! It is a lot more common then you would think.

Ok, now that I started rattling again I don't remember what else I was going to say.....Oh, Bl4 glad your dog is doing better. I vaccinated Butt dog myself when I first got her and she had a reaction to the shot. Her ears and belly turned dark pink and she got real lethargic. Of course it was after hours ( fyi never do that kind of stuff when Vets are closed) so we had to go to the ER for dogs. By the time we got their she was feeling better but didn't want to take any chances. $100 later ... ArgggHH..

BTW do you know what the dosage for the Benadryl is for dogs? I need to write it in my book. So many Mgs per lb.....?

ET was so hot last night that he slept out in the truck.....plus he got ticked at me right before he came to bed !!! LOL So of course he didn't bring his phone out with him and when I attempted to call and wake him up he didn't answer. And I was not going to hop out there to get him in the rain....so he missed his doctor appointment !!!! Idiot !!!! So HE ACTUALLY made the phone call to reschedule..... I wasn't going to do his dirty work... I get yelled at all the time by his doctors when he doesn't get his blood tested on a regular basis (because he is on blood thinners)

Ok, now I'm done. I have no idea how you all get your stories told in such short posts..... Hmmmmm

SClark, cool pics!

RB, yes this is my first year growing these beans. This is the description from Baker Creek heirloom seeds.

This famous Dutch heirloom bean has an incomparable flavor. The tender and superbly delicious 7-inch pods are yellow, with amazing purple streaks! Also makes a tasty shelled bean. Popular with chefs and gourmets. Compact plants set high yields.

CS, I plan on building the same style habitat you have for your mealworms/beetles. The pill bugs we have had in a fishtank before, but I think I will go the rubbermaid container route, that way the will have space and will not dry out so quickly. The Elodea is a PITA! We have a huge water tank out in the tropical greenhouse and we have some out in there we are trying to keep alive, and I have some in a fishtank. Last year when we were looking all over for the stuff, the fish store that I purchase from is no longer allowed to sell the stuff due to the DNR (apparently it was getting into the water systems). I will look at Petsmart today while I am out shopping. I am trying to convince the profs to do a different procedure for the Osmosis Diffusion lab...... using all of the solutions of varying concentrations and the dialysis tubing takes up a lot of room, time, and $$.... Now I REALLY need to find a way to grow brine shrimp successfully and in large quantities.

Frenchie I work at a University in the Biology department. The cat morgue is a big filing cabinet that contains the cats used for anatomy class.

Well, I better get going or I am never going to get those tanks cleaned....
Cool thanks so much for the info! I looked up Baker Creek just now and what an interesting site. There is another bean shown in their 2013 catalog (Good Mother Stallard) that actually looks more like what Grandma grew. I just sent my request for the 2014 catalog and will most likely be ordering from them this winter. I know it is more environmentally correct to peruse the online catalog, and I do go paperless as much as possible, but I always love getting the seed catalogs in January. I also like to support our US postal service.

Thanks French. When I had originally called Barron one of the vets said it was MG, when i called back again to get an update on the other tests vet working on my case said he didn't know where the first vet found that info but he said it showed it was negative. He said the first vet may have read the wrong persons report. I got the papers from the autopsy a few weeks ago and it stated that he had an intestinal parasite-etiology Hexamita and nothing else. I got a big scare from nothing.

Question . . . it is suggested that when ordering chicks from the hatchery they should be vaccinated (agreed), but what about chicks that are hatched by a broody hen? I think I asked this when my little brood was hatched and I thought someone on here said it wasn't necessary. What are your thoughts on this?

An officemate just told me of another good seed company. Anyone ever ordered from Fedco? I'm going to get their catalog too. This is called "retirement planning"
