Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all--I thought I replied last night...I dont see the post. Maybe I forgot to send it since I was falling asleep in the chair! I certainly did not get enough sleep for sure.
Good morning everyone.
So sorry to hear of the losses
Sclark- wow beautiful pictures!
You guys are all so funny about the picture I posted. Jim- I would be delighted to go out on the town with you. Too bad we live so far apart
wink.png

I bet he would be delighted too...your DH not so much!
Yesterday I became a great aunt. I feel so old. Maybe because all my great aunts seemed like they were always old. We now have five generations in our family, which I think is pretty cool!
The chickens and goats and pony are doing great. Our one young rooster that was spared from the freezer is doing well too. I thought he would act up once it was just him and Colt, but Colt is showing him how to stay in line. It is funny though- it seems like Steve (thats what DS9 named the young roo) is recruiting some of the girls to follow him. Colt gets so mad!
Anyhow- did a lot of pickling yesterday. More today if I get the ambition. My dad went to pick apples, so I suppose applesauce will be soon.

Hope you all have a great day! More storms though maybe?
Is this a pic of pickled peppers? I would like your recipe please! I seem to have a great abundance this year and we cant eat them fast enough!
I have a bunch of roos here and they all get their own "harem" it seems. The higher up they are the more girls they can keep. It is kind of fun to watch as I open different pens at different times of the year.
on the autopsy report it said to use oxy-tet as this parasite is very rare in chickens so that explains why after giving it to them the day I dropped off Jamal in Barron within 3 days nearly all symptoms were gone. I plan on worming this afternoon with Ivermectin( anyone have the dose? I thought it was a pea size per adult bird, but what about the younger ones). We plan in moving some birds today so figured it would be a good time to do it. Tipsy is going back free range and Willy(pb speckled Sussex is getting 4 ss ladies. Siless(lav orp ) is going in coop with BO and black split. Gold and silver wyondottes and blrw are getting moved to Blues(blrw) pen. So confusing but after daughter reminded me it sounded good. When Pretty Boy(slw) gets old enough, id say another month orhens so GLW and slw will go with him. I have to build yet another coop. I already have 8 as it is.
I have read a pea sized amount too...what I am always worried about is that maybe the Ivermectin isnt mixed well in the tube...I assume you are using horse wormer? The liquid is easier IMHO; at least it is homogenous!

BL4 you have the most interesting job! Much of it sounds pretty fun...but not the boring parts. So where do they get the cats? Euthanized from shelters? When I worked at our county shelter the vet tech that was responsible for that used to curl them up so cute like they were sleeping, and then put them in the "cat freezer." I got a pretty big shock the first time I went out to get more dogfood and opened that freezer to see what was in it!

Having a little snack of potato chips dipped in sour cream, humus and and peach mango salsa...not bad! I might not eat dinner!

Guess I better head out to close up...it seems to be getting darker sooner...unfortunately.
Have a good night! TerriO

Well all the work is done and I can barely move. At least I won't have to worry about it getting done anymore. Only problem we had is putting Red in same pen as Lady, as Red kicked Lady out so I had to divide the coop in half so Lady wasn't stuck outside with the babies. All in all we got alot done and I'm satisfied until something else comes up. I think I'll set eggs tomorrow if all goes well. Gonna try and get some sleep for once, been a few weeks since I've slept more than a few hours.

Sorry to hear about your Latte Angie.

Terri I LOVE my job at Fox, I call that my 'play' job. I get to come in and interact with students, learn about their research projects, I get to have my SW tank, I grow bugs and seaweed....... I was even mentioning to the one prof that we should get some Button quail to maintain the greenhouses.....

All of you sensitive types quit reading.

The cats they use for anatomy class are from shelters. Some are obviously pets since they will get the occasional declawed cat or some that have been neutered, I believe the majority of the cat are feral though. They are injected with dye to indicate the arteries and veins. They also have a few pregnant cats. The cat I dissected for class was a giant pregnant calico, my partner and I were expecting large kittens....... and we ended up with kittens that had JUST entered into the fetal development stage. They were so amazing to see! These little tiny kittens the size of my thumbnail.... all they needed was time to get bigger and grow hair.

OK it's safe now!

Today I had fun, I was able to go out and get a few new critters for the SW tank.

I picked up a pencil sea urchin, some frogspawn coral, and a Magenta dottyback (I think). I also bought more live substrate, so hopefully we will get some feather worms and other micro sea life to grow on the rock.

I also picked up a few more fantail goldfish for the FW tank. Both tanks had a little vacuum session this morning to get ready for the new arrivals.

I set up the beetle habitat (followed CS's directions), and I have the pill bug habitat all ready to rock and roll. Now all I need are the beetles and pill bugs the show up! No Elodea to be found at PetCo.

Of course when I came home tonight the dang dogs had to have a BIG fight. Poor Trixie needs to just bite that little sh!t once and he would never bug her again. Right now she is sporting a sliced open ear...... and of course shaking her head all the time so it does not clot!

Time for dinner. I made tacos...... I better get my dinner before my kids eat it all.

Question . . . it is suggested that when ordering chicks from the hatchery they should be vaccinated (agreed), but what about chicks that are hatched by a broody hen? I think I asked this when my little brood was hatched and I thought someone on here said it wasn't necessary. What are your thoughts on this?
I'd say its a crap shoot you have to decide if these are pets or for eggs and meat. It is hard to tell the difference sometimes our hearts are so big because we care about our animals!
Its impossible to keep our kids from diseases even when vaccinated. I remember kids god Pertusis vaccines (whooping cough) and they caught it at age 16 it was then decided by Doctors that a booster shot should be given in the early teens... Life is a box of chocolates...

SClark those pictures were awesome if Poultry doesn't work out there is always photography...You use a DSLR? I have one but need to know how to use it....

Cindlady, sorry your dealing with mareks, I hope I never have to. The big mg scare was bad enough for me and to find out all along it was a parasite! And anyone else for that matter going thru chick diseases. Also if I stay off my feet NOTHING will get done around here. Good thing I went out and checked on the animals as son was too busy mowing the neighbors lawn his rabbits were out of water. Both the bucks are shedding and daughter spent about an hour just coming out Thumper(Netherland Dwarf) Yelled at son to gather up bottles to freeze water to put in rabbit cages and chicken pens to help keep cool. Just cold water and shade areas don't seem to be cutting it as their were alot of hot birds yesterday.

Thought I'd share a few more photos from over the weekend.

Little Orp chick come to see what I was doing, not a clear photo but thought it was cute.

Spent Saturday night camping at Trails End in Bruce with the boys for Boyscouts. We had hobo dinner and breakfast the boys made us, turned out pretty good although I couldn't eat as throat is still too sore. The site is located on the Chippewa River and regulated by Rusk Cty, open to the public for small fees. The kids were on a canoe trip earlier Saturday which I missed because I had the swap meet to go to. We had the option to stay in a cabin for $1 a night but I chose to ruff it in the tent, I did however bring the air mattress. Photo was taken on the walking path that leads to a rope bridge.

After camp was over we come home and unpacked quick and went to Slough Gundy north of Hawkins so the boys could swim and me and daughter could take pictures. This is just south of the Flambeau Prison. When we went last year, this was all covered in water.

Once you cross this river bed, there's a trail that goes to this cliff that everyone jumps off.

This is the view behind me.

Stormed pretty good here last night, they said we got 2 inches of rain. I love to take lightning photos so thought I'd try and get some shots last night but it stayed in the clouds and showed no bolts.

Here is a shot I took last year of a storm that went thru just south of my place, it was nice as I could sit out and no rain to fight with wrecking my camera.
AWESOME PICS!!

How sad about the cats ! So they get them when they are still alive? I thought they used dumby animals for biology class ? I mean wasn't there even a big deal made about the frogs years ago?
Plus I thought you worked for two places? I must be loosing it !!! Just had what started out to be a healthy dinner turned bad. I was going to boil chicken breast and make salads but decided to fry them in olive oil with some Spicy Mrs Dash. I used way to much olive oil. Then I decided to look for a can of cream of mushroom soup but found a jar of Alfredo Sauce so poured that in instead. Popped some Yukon Gold potatoes in the microwave and then some whole kernel corn (not home grown :( though ). ET dished it up and smothered the potato and corn with butter !!! Arghhh.. For a quick meal it tasted pretty good. Sitting here watching the Biggest Looser wondering what we have around here for desert !!!! This woman lost 72 lbs in 90 days..... Hmmm !!

I do work at two places Frenchie, I work at UW-Fox in Menasha and the Chemical Co. in Oshkosh. I started back at Fox this week since the semester begins next Tuesday. I am only an LTE (Limited Term Employee) at Fox...... I find it funny that I have been an LTE for 6 years....... of course they want to hire me full time but cannot (creating positions at Universities is difficult). I suppose I should bite the bullet and get my Masters in Biology so I can Teach instead of do the grunt work..... it would be great if I could get the UW to pay for it though!

I ate a baked sweet potato for dinner tonight. Its the first one I have ever had. Really filling, but not something I would prepare the same way again. I'm thinking mashed with pecans and maple syrup would be good.
