oh crap!!!

blood in the crap this morning that is NOT an intestinal shed in the smaller chick from Terri. Could it be anything other than Cocci??? She has been eating and drinking and behaving normally otherwise, just much smaller than her sister (?). I think I had better warn Allysin, my neighbor that has a small chick as well. Did my research and found it is possible to progress slower if the chick is otherwise healthy. I've had 2+ generations here so far and not had it show up. I thought these were old enough and I didn't know what Terri had done prior as far as shots etc. so I didn't get medicated feed (wasn't even available at FF that I noticed). Anyway, I didn't plan on it but it looks like I'm off to FF to get Corid. DA#$%#%&! That will make the cat the only thing on the place that's not on drugs!!!

BTW - I know what I think but want your input. Should I be concerned about my Amigas that just turned 5 months and are laying? I'm just not certain if the chick picked up the Cocci here from a strain my girls didn't react to or they brought it with them and could expose my other girls to it. I really thought I was over dealing with this stuff when we culled Momma and got the other ones healthy. Great response to the Duramycin by the way, they all switch to probiotics tomorrow.

OK, so, you are all probably off enjoying your holiday so I am off to FF to get the Corid because Cocci is the most obvious answer. Just hoping it's the right one. I apologize if my prior post sounded a bit harsh. I am just so frustrated! I do my best to keep my girls in a healthy clean and secure environment, they get the best feed, I even make sure their treats are in line with a proper diet. Their coop is scooped every morning and stripped clean at least once a month. I swear, if I wasn't such a woose I'd just cull the chicks and be done with it. No I wouldn't. I'm not a quitter. BUT sometimes I wish I was!!! One thing I am done with. From here on in I am a closed flock farm!!! My next birds are only coming from eggs I shove under whomever goes broody. Note to self---LISTEN TO SELF!

Oh well, off to FF now, Wish me luck. The entire state of Illinois is now on hwy 45 heading south and now so will I be.

oh well, at least I will be the only car on the road heading back north.

too much blood in the poop to ignore. Yesterday, ok, probably a shed. This morning 2 more fresh, clearly bloody piles. Not wise to ignore if for no other reason than the safety of the rest of the flock.
BTW - thousands of years ago we hadn't messed with their genetics, domesticated them and generally made them into nothing like what God designed. just my .02

I swear this is Monday the 13th......

Try to make a nice breakfast for the kiddos to celebrate the end of summer. I should have stuck with cereal....... but no, I decided to make sausage, pancakes AND waffles! (We were out of bacon). To make the waffles I need self-rising flour. No big deal I can mix up my own which I did. The I make the waffle batter since it needs to sit for 40 min before use and of course I follow the recipe and do not think twice about the ingredients. Send youngest DS to the store for buttermilk since I need it for the pancakes (trying to sour fresh milk with vinegar does not work well). I tell him SPECIFICALLY to grab the Big Slam of buttermilk, it is in the green bottle. He comes home with a pt of heavy whipping cream and tells me they are completely out of buttermilk. I tell him to go back to the store, get my $ back and ask for buttermilk. If they do not have it run to the Star Dairy and get it there. He proceeds to have a hissy fit in the yard and destroys the pt of cream in the process.

( I told you Heather, this German/Irish mix is volatile!) So now I have a big puddle of heavy cream in the lawn and trails of the stuff going to the trash can. I tried to rescue whatever I could but the entire container was smashed in the bag. Sent oldest DS to the store for said buttermilk and of course he finds it. I proceed with the pancakes and start making the waffles. I get everything finished up and we start eating...... and my youngest DS starts asking me if the waffles are supposed to be super salty...... yeah, they tasted like super salty crackers with syrup on them. Of course I now remember that I should have omitted the salt I added to the waffle batter because of the SRF......

I wish I had some chickens to feed these yucky waffles to.

At least I did not wreck the coffee.

Time for a shower and see what else I can wreck today.

Morning...reading intermittently and helping DD load her car. I dont think she will be totally moved out EVER! I said, "Yeah, now I will have two new rooms!" She said something to the effect that Mom's dont say that if they love their kids. (well, OK...thanks.) LOL--I should have met Frenchie long ago...then maybe I would have just had animals and not had kids either!

Dont know what to say about your troubles Vicki. Has your friend had the same thing happen with hers? Could be stress I guess...all the rest are fine here. I do believe that too much handling causes stress also, unless of course it is a bird that is used to it from day one. I would hit them all with the Corrid cause it will make you feel better!

Yesterday I noticed I now have sneezing/coughing in my coop and some diahria in my flock. I am sure they now have whatever Latte had at the end. Xanadu that was with her seems fine. I have been reading everything I can on what type of respitory infection this could be and more confused and scared than ever!! It sounds as though antibiotics will do nothing more than prevent secondary infections but will not cure any of these-more of a sit and wait. I put vitamins in their waterers.

I have duramycin on hand and can possibly get tylan from BBP. Any suggestions on which of these to use? I stopped at Fleet Farm yesterday and they didnt have anything other than duramycin available to treat. My eggs have ropped from 12-15 a day down to 6-8 in the last 3 days also. Im scared.
