Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks for the welcome. I expected the board to be silent on the day before opening day! Good luck to those who are out, and I suppose they are delighted for the snow. As for me, a dusting on Christmas eve is all I need. Jvls..those budgies are to die for! I love them. To whomever asked... totally outed as a horse girl! I have a 2 year old unbroke colt, and a 10?12?yr old Rocky Mtn horse mare. There is a 4 chicken city limit thing, My across the street neighbors have some, the folks at the end of my block have some... around the block there is one lonely chicken in a nice set up- you get the idea, there are lots of chickens all over the place in my neighborhood. Im currently following the Serama thread the Heritage RIR thread, this one, are there other really good ones Im missing?

Hi All!

Hi Left!

I take it your renting a barn away from your home? What else is in there and how often do you get to see your critters? OK, you posted while my computer was froze!

LM..... Sure is fun watching the young chickens in snow for the first time! Last week when we had some snow only the older roosters and a couple of older hens were out. Those poor guys kept going to the door and calling for the girls but they just stand by the door!

RBerry.....Those eggs will get a little bigger each time they lay, after about a dozen they should be pretty close to full size.

Amy...Awwwwww!!!!

Jim.... Grrrr.... I wish you and "the guinea lady" were within reach! I could use some female guineas and some laying hens. My egg people are getting ******!

Bl4.... See if you can get all the people on city/town boarder to raise chickens! Surround them in poultry until they give in!!!!!LOL

H&R.... Good to see you! I got a Welsummer roo a few weeks ago, I only have 1 hen though and she's getting older, not laying well anymore. I want to get a few more hens.

BigZ.... Glad that Lefty is working out for you. Amazing how they adapt.

CC.... Not better yet, a day at a time I guess.

Jon's friend didn't come, got hung up with family matters. Nothing else new..... Night All!

We have a lot of animals besides horses, for example 2 miniature donkeys, a buffalo, some rabbits (Im not sure of the breed) potbelly pigs goats and the myriad of chickens a goose, some ducks. I dont own anything but the horses, but have really come to enjoy the various chicken personalities. and because they are free range theres been some loss especially of the breeds we only had one of- birds of a feather flocking together I guess. But at home I could have a few hens of one kind so as to keep some as purebreds.

Love that little Jedi! Too cute LMiller! That pic needs a meme.....

My oldest comes up to the bedroom this morning crowing about the 1/16 inch of snow. He says, 'mom I see snow...and schoolbuses!' Ackkk, overslept! It was 8:10, had him breakfasted, brushed, dressed and there before the 2nd bell rang 20 min later.

Long night with a hungry babe and Cartman crawling in with us twice.

Speaking of baby, this is him a couple weeks ago. Growing entirely too fast. He's wearing some 6mo outfits already and less than 3 months old. Waahhhhhhhh!

His mohawk is the best! <3
He is just too cute!

We are just passing Amherst
Have fun today...I am really sorry I will miss all of the fun.

It is really cold out..the birds are all huddled up in the sun at the door ways of the coops.
I am making the base for a few pans of chicken pot pie..All I will need to do tomorrow is assemble and put in the oven.

About a week ago I fed my chickens some homemade sweetbread that had a lot of sugar, I mean a lot and then a few days later I collected the eggs and cooked them and they were very sweet, was it possible that the bread did that or was it just all in my head??? Any thoughts?

I know this is old hat for most of you, but . . . we got our first pullet egg yesterday!!

So cute, it's just a bit larger than the bantam eggs. Now the question to the more experienced, about how long does is take for the eggs to reach the larger size? I suppose it depends on the breed.

Will you be selling the pups? Not saying I'm interested, necessarily

I'm just checking for kristip

Pullet eggs NEVER get old! (I just wish I would start seeing some) They get big real quick and then you cant even tell any more.
I am not in charge of finding the pups homes...they will all be up for adoption; I think they wait until 9-10 weeks. All will be spayed or neutered by then, micro-chipped, wormed and have their shots begun. Perhaps all of you on the fence about a puppy will want to meet them after I post pics? Yeah, I guess I better get them born first right?
Speaking of...I need to get that room cleaned out and ready for her--I guess she is just about ready! I hope she doesnt have them during the transport!

I had a call from the Guinea Lady.. She has to give up all of her chickens and buinneas because of health issues.. .Kind of feeling down in the dumps about it..
she has about 18 guineas, most of them from this summer's hatch,, she will let them go for $6.oo/each,, She is going to have her roosters butchered, and she also has an assortment of pet hens that all have to go..

.......jiminwisc.....
Really sad to hear this JIm! What is wrong with her besides general old age? Is it fixable? Every winter I think of this cause even though I watered this morning it is mostly frozen and I have to get out and do it again!
th.gif
And every winter it gets harder...once I am out it is OK as has been mentioned...it's just getting dressed and going out the door!

It is official; the people in this town do not want anyone to have chickens.

I finally saw the results of the survey taken last summer; 60% of the responses stated they do not want the poultry ordinance changed, and 48% STRONGLY OPPOSE to the raising of chickens in town.

I wonder how annoyed these people are going to be when they figure out that the people living right next to the city park (and right along the kids playground) have a small backyard flock.

The joke is on them I guess!
SO are you going to report these people or what? (they are legal right?) I really like the idea that (I think Cind had) to have all the people surrounding your town get chickens! That would be great to say that you have been living with them right next door and YOU arent DEAD!

Well, you know what they say..."you ARE what you heat!" I really have no idea...it is said that onion goes through to the egg...I have not ever tasted it though. Do an experiment for us OK? Curious minds want to know!

And I am off into the really chilly night! TerriO

Hi All,,

I spent all afternoon out in the shop.. I got a lot accomplished toward building my next feather plucker.. (why is plucker underlined on a chicken web site ??)

Terri, Marlene has severe Vertigo .. she fell and banged her head pretty hard.. her Dr wants no more incidents like that !! neither do we.. she is 78 years old.. you have a way to go to get there, so you just keep running water and breaking ice for a few more years..

I called the processor in Dorchester,, It is about 10 miles farther one way than the place in Mosinee, but I am thinking they will do a better job .. the geese will cost a minimum of $9.oo each.. freezing is 14 cents per pound.. and cleaned gizzards, liver and heart is $1.50 per goose.. We cannot get them done until after Christmas.. not a problem, since I would have to water the ones we keep anyhow.. and in January, we can freeze them outside for free, so that cost is eliminated ..

I am going to wean the geese off of the granulated feed and get them onto ground oats and corn.. that will but some fat on them.. the roosters we butchered last week did not have any fat on them.. and I think that is some of the reason our egg production is so low.. I have the penned up chickens on corn and oats now.. we will be transferring them into the coop tomorrow..

we caught the last two renegade BO pullets this afternoon.. so all the chickens and guineas are going to be locked up for at least a week.. they don't like going outside anyhow when it is this cold..
