Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey everyone just found the site looking for nesting information on my Golden nd Lady Amherst Pheasants. From a smaller town in Southeastern WI in Racine County. We have had a pen or two and many Amherst and Goldens for at least 5+ years nowand love it. Looking to expand to. Actually lost a male Amherst a week or two ago and will be looking around and on the site for a new one as well if anyone has suggestions but other than that just wanted to introduce my self and fill ya in on my birds/situation (looking for male Amherst, and nesting info for pheasants).

Welcome! We currently have 1 Red Golden pheasant hen- our male died about a year ago(broke his neck) and DH wasn't sure what he wanted to do. This was our 2nd male as the first one escaped the aviary on DH. The hen hangs out with our pair of peafowl.

There is a pheasant thread going on here that has lots of good information- I think someone mentioned using an plastic milk crate on its side with straw. Never had a reason to try it!

Crazy day yesterday.... after a long day of work, the dog got out and it was really cold out there...so the kids and I are running around the back yard trying to catch him or have him chase us...he wanted nothing to do wtih it. Kids were in tears that their dog was going to die and they would have nothing to be thanksful for tomorrow. I was in my dress pants and heeled clogs running in the snow. Yelling! I am sure the neighbors think we are nuts, although we have 3 acres of land, we are next to a busy HWY...it is just on the far side of our yard.
Then my 7 year old daughter had her first sleep over last ngiht. I know the family adn am sure she is fine, but I dont think I slept good because if that. And then this morning, I take Tom out of the fridge and after 4 days, still feels fairly frozen. So into the sink he went htis morning and told hubby to keep an eye on him and run fresh water and now and again. I need to brine him tonight.
TGThere are so many temps and times to cook a turkey it is driving me nuts. 325 or 375? it is a 16 lb turkey so I know it will take a while. I think I have everything else under control....except kids and diog that is. lol.

Chickens are hating teh cold weather. Guzzling water too. Have to fill the waterers more lately...not sure why. oh well. My cute little Black Rock bantys arI received from Connie H are starting tio lay. such cute little birds. Still need to work on them not being so skittish. But at least getting a couple of eggs each day. Trying to keep up wtih demands. But I love to eat those eggs too!

good afternoon,,Kristi, I would opt for the lower temp ,, I seem to recall that you bake a turkey 20 minutes for each pound ..

I am cooking a chicken and a turkey.. I am going to cut them into serving size pieces before I bake them.. they will be in the large Nesco cooker at 200F to 250F for a long time.. we are going to eat late in the afternoon, so Annie told everybody to eat a good breakfast early .. Not expecting many people to show up here.. they all have relatives to go to.. we will be eating leftovers for a week .. chicken sandwiches, chicken pot pie, chicken fajitas ,, and if we get sick of chicken, there will be the turkey to turn to ..

scary stuff with the poisoned birds and unknown hunters. We average 2 cars per deer season that come up the driveway and quickly leave when they see the house. When asked they always say they thought it was a public hunting grounds.

I butchered the tom turkey today. He was/is big. with no legs, feathers, or innerds he weighs a touch under 30 pounds. He will not fit in a 5 gallon bucket for brining, so I busted out an antique galvanized15 gallon boiler with a lid to soak him in.

My neice needed to move turkey dinner to Saturday morning around 11am. So, 30x20minutes= 10 hours. Hooray for the oven's auto on feature!

JJ

wishing good eats and good company to all.

I mentioned a few posts ago about my large white dogs.. this is Dora.. the smaller female.
this was taken 2 years ago..

I cannot find a picture of Puppy,, he stands about s taller at the shoulder than Dora.. and looks more wolfish to the untrained eye ..

I am waiting for company to show up, They are going to pick up a couple of parakeets and a cage..

20 minutes a pound is for the temp at 350*. One year I screwed up & did 325*; the bird was not done.

ETA: I posted Jim's dogs pic for him. I believe Dora is the one in front and the puppy is the one in the back. Is that right, Jim?

Thanks Celtic.... I appreciate the thoughts along with the others... So many websites say different things.... I think I have everything prepped, was planning ten people and now up to 14... Love last minute family.
Ok everyone have a get thanksgiving,

Well, I've been really busy the past few days. We drove to Muncie to see my friend. She was doing well, but went in today to finish the reconstruction. I also got to see a bunch of my friends while there, so it was a good time even though it only lasted a day.

From the time we got back, Sunday, we have been on a cleaning rampage. We have sorted through closets, drawers, boxes, and under beds and have donated 7 bags of clothes to Goodwill and thrown out 5 boxes full of papers, worn out clothes, and broken toys. I have sorted through each kids room and gotten rid of clothes that are too small, for the summer, or aren't worn. I washed all of their dirty clothes and supervised them as they put the clothes away, rearranged their craft tables, and cleaned their rooms (because we all know it wouldn't have gotten done otherwise). The girls made 6 dozen oatmeal choc. chip cookies and 2 loaves of cranberry-orange bread, my dad & I made rutabaga and butternut squash, DH is putting turkey #1 in the smoker as we speak, and I'm about to make Cranberry-jalapeno salsa.

Still lots to do. But the chickens & rabbits are really happy with the food they are getting.

I'm sure that you are all just as busy prepping for tomorrow. Good Luck, Healthy eating, and Health to you all!

P.S. Deli - I hope that your birds are not too badly effected by the rotten food!
