Happy Thanksgiving To Everyone! One needs to be 100 yards from your occupied buildings to discharge a firearm....the young kid without a backtag was prolly making a drive without a gun. If he had a gun without a backtag, that's a violation.

We won't discuss the Lion's game, will we!

Make it a safe holiday....bigz

Happy Thanksgiving all!
We're not eating till late so I have a few minutes to check in and I have a question....

I butchered 5 cockerels yesterday. Kept out the hearts and gizzards and cooked em up fresh last night so I'd have stock for stuffing today. When I cut the gizzards open after cooking they were gray inside! Not a red meat gray but like a dark slate gray! Then after they sat for a few minutes they turned a reddish meat color where they were cut. Has anyone ever seen this before!? Could it have been because I cooked them fresh? ...I always toss them in the freezer till I need them and have never seen this gray color before.

So sorry about your birds Del. I'm always afraid I'm going to do something dumb to hurt my birds...I don't need the feed companies to help.
Last Saturday morning I cam back from hunting and heard alarm calls coming from the coop. I ran out there and when I went inside to see what was wrong the birds freaked and flew into the walls! It was me they were afraid of!! My blaze orange coat!

Quote I heard somewhere that chickens have a bigger ability to see colors than humans...

I volunteered to be the first on the thread to go to the emergency room for stupidity. You know those electric Cuisinart stir sticks? I was using one to make a dip for the brunch fruit plate I had... Do not use your finger to clear the blade area while the thing is plugged in... Nice clean cuts no flap so they glued it. Will lose the fingernail I believe and it hurts like heck... On the bright side it was left hand and I am excused from dishes for several days.

Del so sorry about your birds... I had an incident with mold but it was scratch and I don't think they got enough to do them harm, least ways I never saw any symptoms. Hope everyone of the survivors does not have any permanent damage.

TO those pies look wonderful...

BigZ wishing you luck on the hunt... almost got mine with the car last night while they sauntered out of the way on our dead end street... Don't need that we are already down one car in the family as DD hit an icy patch on a bridge and did her radiator in... car is a '97 Rav4 so cold we were able to drive to get a repair estimate but fear it will be more than "Gregory" (DD's name for the vehicle) is worth

Take care all stay healthy!

Oooo that made me cringe. Hope you heal fast!!

I guess they can see colors...My neighbor told me she freaked out her game birds last week when she went in their pen. She was wearing a red knit hat.

Delish: SO sorry to hear about that with your chickens!! What were the original symptoms? :-(

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! We just finished up and trying to let it settle before hitting the pumpkin, pecan, and cheesecake I made last night....they may have to wait till tomorrow!

Anyone going out for Black Friday shopping?

I actually did not see symptoms when I discovered black mold in the feed.
Because of the Holidays I decided to dry feed. I purchased a new bag feed. I never heard of it before. It was cheaper and I was lazy. I dumped 1/2 the bag in feeders and never looked at the feed. It looked different and I attributed it to bagged feed and a new brand. I filled those feeders to the top. Three days later when I needed to top them off I did not grab the whole bag i just scooped some out in a large container and see tiny black specks and clumps. I took it in the house and seen the mold when I looked in the light. I just went and bought a new bag and did not think too much about it.....till the next morning.
I went into the coop and I had several birds laying down kicking feet or stiff. Was sad to say the least. I looked for mink marks or something that would just kill..and found nothing. The other coops the same. (I have three coops). I knew it had to be the feed.

I treated with Epsom Salt and Molasses flush first day
Milk and Pro Gel and Pro max the next day
I ordered detox and had it over nighted and treated when it arrived and they were up and walking and no more dead after 12 hours.
For 4 days the birds have lost weight. I am letting them out tomorrow for the first time and I will see how they do. I do have two birds in the house. (Gold laced). If they do not improve I will be sending them off to get tested. I might have fried the livers on my birds. I also wonder what other damage I did. I hope since it was one bag and a partial it is not permanent.

Jim broke the thread! Jim broke the thread!

I'm heading back out to the woods as I can't watch the Packers anymore today.

yup, I broke it and I'm glad ,,,,

I tried to be loyal to the Pack, but it just got too frustrating for me, too.. I came down here to play on the puter .. It is not the 1/4 backs fault.. it doesn't matter who it is,, there just isn't enough protection.. and we could live with a sack or two,, but then we have the lack of D#.. how hard is it to get in front of a running man,, just stand there and let him run into you, somebody else can come and finish him off once he is slowed down.. but Nooooo , make all your tackle attempts from the side, and don't use both arms.. one will do it,, yeah, right..
I could go on and on, but then you might get the impression that I am disgusted ..

JJ, I imagine the deer were in mortal danger when you went back out in that sour mood.. eh?

the birds were tender, but I did not care for that Rosemary spice ..

Jim--this post was also misnumbered! I had no idea what you were talking about because the numbers were fine and made sense...until I got to this last post! I thought maybe it just needed to be refreshed...nope! It is kinda weird having the post be numbered higher than the actual amount of posts--

Glad Cuties took those Keets! They will have a great home and Syd will probably have them doing tricks by next week. ALSO--you didnt give me any wine when I visited (except for during supper) Sheesh--now I feel slighted. Yes that fam does quite an amount of driving...I remember doing that too...it's cause the kids fall asleep and you dont have to deal with them! (at least that's why we took long rides!)

Sorry to hear about the birds Deli--how many did you actually lose? I hope the company can do something for you! You still have the rest of the feed right? I would get right on that for sure.

Clark...did I miss something about the baby? You made it sound like it was a rough start to life?

There was something else I wanted to comment on...cant remember. I think my very full stomach is pressing on my brain or something! I sure wish I had some 7up! I am just stuffed--and we ate right after the game!

Heading to bed...TerriO

ETA: It was the immersion blender story! OOOWWWWW! Those little blades look really sharp. Did you press the button and it turned on---or did you just run your finger over the blade! Either way--OUCH again!

I might have walked away from the game if the Packers were on top and the the Lions were stinking up the field.

also

No deer to report either. The woods sure were peaceful though. Well worth missing the end of the game for.

I like to be in out to watch and listen to the woods wake up with the sun and put itself to bed at dusk.
