Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Deli...that is reasuring to know! So I looked at the little guy and while he looks cold, feel dont look frostbitten... But he is about 6-8 months old and while he crows really good, I have never seen him try the piggyback dance with the ladies...maybe that is what this reddish is...besides the cold in general. will keep you posted.

So sorry Jeline Sounds like you did everything you could for her!

I am so tired of this cold!!! For the first time in 3 years, there were ice crystal specks on the inside walls of the coop this morning! Which means I have too much moisture in there and not sure what to do about it....as opening up the coop with the windchills as bad as they are and negative temps isnt a good idea either. (Yes I have a couple girls who are moulting too)

I think I may break down and buy one of those "Sweeter Heaters"-has anyone here used them or know anyone that has???

sweet PTZ to help dry possibly.

I have heard of them and I have heard positive and negative. The most negative I have heard is mounting issues and that it is flimsy.
Some one said it was snake radiant heat tape with a tin hood..? I have never seen one in person so I have no idea.

I use the Brinsea outdoors for chick heat. In this weather I have to use it inside cardboard boxes. It is in a double box on its side with insulation between the boxes. I flip the box on each side daily and replace the inside box once a week. (chick poo). By 4 boxes the chicks are out of the box...I than use just a large box upside down with a large hole cut out for the chicks to enter and exit. It does not get that warm and it is not recommended for freezing temps.

I would think it is a possibility. Males do it and females do not so it is unusual and something that causes many people concern when they get the first sexually maturing cockerel/rooster.

Gotta love good neighbors...jennie's neighbor in town received a ham and turkey from his employer and said he didn't want them, cause he didn't know how to cook them.....jennie said sure I'll take them and give them to my mom and dad.....sweet....I'll be cutting ham steaks fore long. I have visions of good meals....I'll send him a thanks card and a $20... and it's still a good deal...

Watch out for good neighbors...tis the season...bigz
Nice score for you guys Bigz! You deserve it with all the giving and sharing you guys do. Speaking of neighbors...I am getting a new one! My friends that live down the road bought Harriet's house across the street and are having their MIL move in. I saw the moving truck a little bit ago out my LR window. I am making some Curried Squash soup tonight and I may take some to her tomorrow as a "welcome."

Sheesh almost 6--I guess I better get that squash scooped out! (I saved the seeds this time!) The weather guy just said the wind chill is 11 below...yeah, I thought my face was pretty frozen!

Stay warm! TerriOstayingwarmeatingsoup

chilly evening... we are at 2* here currently and it's windy so the snow is blowing/drifting

just finished up the chores in the garage, shut the coop up early today as the chickens pretty much stayed inside. We are getting 3-6 eggs per day from our Andalusians.......whatever is collected up till Thursday will go into the incubator for New Years Day hatch.

DH was out removing snow from 9 pm last night to 7 am today, then came home and slept for a few hours. Made spaghetti for supper tonight and just as we were about to sit down to eat- he got a call- a unit we manage had a toilet that failed on the 2nd floor and water was in the basement so he had to head back into town with equipment to clean up and see what needs to be done

guess it might be a later night for him again. Probably will hear from him when he heads for home.

stay warm and safe!

good evening, I can hardly stay awake ,, I left for town early this morning before coffee, and didn't stop for any anywhere either.. I would drink a cuppa now, but then I am afraid I would be awake as late as Cind..

I pulled a good one.. yesterday , I gave the guinea coop an extra 5 gallon waterer,, I hung it up and forgot to take off the bottle cap plug so the water could get out.. DUH,, one thump on the head for this brainiak .... at least the water was not frozen..

I drove from Wausau to Marathon City to pick up 4 bags of ground corn and oats.. I am so glad we didn't get more than a dusting of snow.. the roads were OK, but the blowing snow make visibility zero at times..

I found a dead B O in the coop,.. looked like murder , to me.. it was the lowest rooster on the totem pole,, I hope the other one can hold his own against the rest of them.. unless maybe he had something to do with it..

I had 7 roosters ..now 6..

I sure wish I would have had one of these when the foster dog gave birth! Those puppies would all still be alive I am sure! I read the whole article about setting up a brooder by Gail Damerow...a very good article too!
