Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning--got woken up to a dog/cat fight--not a nice way to wake up for sure. One of the BCs and the Terrier were having at my 19 year old toothless cat! I had to give her a wash and blow dry because her bladder let loose and she was soaked. She seems unharmed and ate a nice breakfast but I hope she doesnt have any internal injuries. I hate when the dogs gang up like that!

Yes BigFam I hate insomnia too! Especially when your mind is thinking of all the things you could be doing but you KNOW you need to sleep. I always wish that I could do stuff with my mind when that happens--like magic.

Well gee, now I am tired and it's 8:30 AM! I have a client at 11 and at 3 and then I go for an overnite for another client! No sleep in my near future I fear. Maybe the cold will wake me up when I go out for chores. Speaking of that...there was a HUGE red tailed hawk sitting in my tree when I had the dogs out earlier! He was massive. They must really puff up to stay warm now. I wish he'd move on...I was glad the birds were still locked up. I yelled at it and it flew off (for now).

Have a good one! TerriO

good morning, have a few minutes .. going to meet DD#2 for breakfast,, she gets done with her 10 P to 10 A shift.. she is a RN at a nursing home..

BigFam, I am here and you are asking for UnkaDan ? what more can you want ??

going out to feed birds.. It sure is more peaceful in the chicken coop with those 20 guineas out of there..

I have a male goose for your georgia .. Yes, people do eat goose eggs... Annie tried to make an angel food cake with them once.. It was not good..

One year I had about 100 extra eggs.. I made up 3-egg omelets .. stacks and stacks of them.. I fed them to the birds over a period of several days.. somewhere we have a box full of blown out goose eggs..

Arny ,, I do not hunt anymore.. I saw one deer like that, but it was going past like a freight train and I never took running shots. that is one nice deer, what part of the State do you hunt ?

Terri, the problem with these factory farms is that cows are nothing more than milk machines. Their life spans are reduced to 4-4 1/2 years due to hormone injections and getting milked 3x a day. There is no excuse for the treatment of those cows, the farm is to blame for not preventing the abuse from happening.

Hello everyone!Question time!
So I am getting quails in the spring and I was reading about how to house them and most people say to use wire flooring but I really don't like to do that so would it be ok to just use a solid surface for the flooring and clean it every so often? And if you have a pic of your coop that would be great see if you are willing?
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Hi again--I just wanted to direct all of you to a blog I read about farming. This is a post regarding the Mercy for Animals video that was linked on here yesterday.

Carrie makes some very valid points. TerriO
Always two sides to any story and most of them lie between the two. Good to have both points of view and then each of us can make our "own" informed decisions...
Can hardly wait for tonight and the negative zero temps....Only good thing about the cold and snow it makes shoveling easier...

Quote: Please tell me that is sarcasm! I really despise these cold temps... sinus infection coming on. yuck! Broke down and turned on the heat lmap in the coop yesterday. It is just on afor a few hours at night and in the morning so will give them a little relief. Went out yesterday and vaselined up the two big combed bantams...Hoping they look better today with the heat lamp in there. Looking forward to seeing those at cluck saturday morning. Ihave a few hours free with hubby taking kids to their basketball camp, but then we have a santa lunch at the school I need to be there for. Wrestling tourney is on sunday so we wioll see how that goes. Otherwise need to finish my shopping and wrapping. yikes.

I watched the video, and read what Terri posted..

Any cow owner who abuses their cows or allows it is an idiot.. those cows are worth a lot of money, and I can't believe that any farmer would abuse such an expensive animal.. or allow it..

the problem with these large operations is that the owners are not actively involved.. they hire foremen and the foremen oversee the workers.. If the foreman is in it just for the money, then things go awry . the workers are just that,,, factory workers.. and many of them are just putting in their time,, just like any other factory worker..

If the animals are being abused and there are telltale signs of it,, the foreman or the owner should notice.. if they are doing their job.. or at least half way conscious .. ie (don't have their heads up their arses)..

I am not siding with the farmer,, and I know how slanted these tree huger groups can be..

we have a 4000 cow operation just less than 5 miles from us.. their doors are always open to tours or anyone who wants to observe their operation.. I have been there a couple of times.. I never saw a crippled cow, or one showing abuse..

it is true that the cows are pushed for production .. and maybe their productive life is shortened, but how is that any different than raising a steer for slaughter at only 1 or 2 years old ?? that is really shortening the normal life span, isn't it ?

where do you think that last steak you cooked came from ??

OK---this HAS GOT TO STOP! How in the world am I agreeing with Jim (and he with me) AGAIN??? I have a feeling that that is what happened on that farm. The foreman wasnt enforcing the animal treatment rules that all employees have to sign at time of hire on that farm. My friend Carrie was saying that these videos are made so the abuse sites can make money. SHe made a really neat video of her husband getting the cows up for milking...then she used the same video and altered it to make it seem bad. Some of you must remember the "propaganda" films we watched in grade school? One was in English and showed things--then they did the same one but it was in Russian or something with sub-titles...totally opposite effect!
Check out her blog--she talks about some neat stuff.

I am home for an hour and then back to work...now I have to check out the game Booby Trap that I got for my therapy session today...I hope it is working order!

Have a good one! TerriO
