Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morbrrrning,

I am having a nice cuppa before I go out to see the birds..

I just checked the weather online for Wausau,, -6* right now, this cold is supposed to be around at least until next Tuesday..

It is an old saying that Feb 26 is the turning point and the temps will gradually go up..

There is a pot luck party tonight,, IDK if I want to go.. right now I don't, but maybe I will change my mind by tonight ..

So just 2 more months of this and then it will jump above 0? WooooooHooo! car said -11 taking garbage to the road this morning.

Thank you all for the sympathetic words about our Blonde Dog.

I have been trying to find a seeder for small quantities of small seeds..(carrot)

I found one that looks promising,, a Wolf River seeder.. however it is from the UK and I don't know anything about the cost in English pounds .

I am going to make seed tapes and I just want something to space the seeds with..

any ideas ? I know how to make the tapes,, I just want a tool for spacing the seeds..

don't force me to invent one, because I will try ..
I already have an idea floating in my head..

I bet you can figure something like this out.... Just have to be a patient shaker and have a tweezers handy for the extra seeds you might get dropped.
Or maybe this is more to your liking http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/ProductCart/pc/Mini-Seedmaster-Hand-Seeder-p3081.htm
I am playing delicate and have the hubby out doing the egg collecting, working so far. Then again maybe he likes it outside cause he doesn't hear the honey do's I keep thinking of.

Good morning--the radio says -2 here right now, front porch 6, and back porch 3. I will go with 6! Heat wave! The sun shines into the back porch now cause it was -1 an hour ago....somehow I dont think the temp has risen that much.

Cuties...you got a 4 letter word past the word police! How did you do it? LOL--I read it and was amazed...they are usually better than that. You said Ammo outs his head in the cat door? Does he stay outside now? Pretty chilly for that and he doesnt have too much fur like Jim's "babies!" My dogs went out and came right back in this morning after their breakfast...the foster dog then promptly took a dump on the rug by the door when I was feeding the torts! Darn Dogs!

The puppy needs to start solids this week. He is 4 weeks old. I guess I will clean out that downstairs bathroom and put him and Pearl in there. I need to get socializing him too seeing that he is alone. I could not find another pup to save my soul after all the littermates died. That will be a good project for me and the girls today. They can play with Diamond and Pearl and I can clean and make a place for them to live! Accomplish 3 things at once...that is my kind of day!

I saw Dexter on the adoption page BL4...I think you should go into fostering too. You would be good at it! Just about when you get sick of the dog it finds a new home. That rescue has a nice page.

I am waiting for a call from the vet about Liza (the party beagle) I had her in for follow up blood tests yesterday and they came out to the car and told me to bring her back in. Her PCV was 20 then after steroids went to 22 now it was 15! She did seem dumpy again...they did another blood panel yesterday---wow that was weird! As soon as I typed that the phone rang...the vet said that compared to the last panel her RBC count is lower and the WBC is higher (not good) So he is recommending a higher steroid dose to make her more comfortable but actually thinks that it may be some cancer that she is trying to fight off. He said that they cant do much else but can refer me to a specialist....yadda yadda. Maybe I will call my SIL (whose Aunt I got the dog from) and they can pay for it? DH is going to flip--that is the only dog he likes besides the old (19) Rat terrier!

Guess I better get dressed and get to the vet office! Later! TerriO

yes my drive in to work this morning said -7..yuck. hubby is home with hte kids all day so I guess he might be crabby when I get home tonight! One kid is going to a birthday party sleep over and we are taking the other out to dinner at Ginza(hibachi steakhouse)
this cold is hard on the eggs. We are going out to cehck on the birds twice a day when we can, but still the eggs are cracked...and they are back to laying again!
Anyone near madison doing a johnnys seed or jungs order? I would split shipping if on an order for seeds. Need to get my grow table up and running. Thinking of planting millet this year...what other good ones for the birds? Any flowers they eat? I usually do rainbow chard in front of the run for pretty and food for them...was hoping to mix it up with flowers. They have their own strawberry patch too...unless my kids spot the berries first...then itis igame on!

ok back to work

thanks momgille I was too lazy to look for these links,,lol

Jim I use both of these, the shaker works well for planting my lettuce, mixed Asian greens, and spinach,,,kind of a pain but works, I plant 6 rows in 3' wide beds

the other one with the plunger I use when planting my soil blocks and my tomato seeds in flats,,,good results

not sure if I would use either for carrots, I have best luck using my "Garden Way" for that, doubt that would work for your tape idea

Ammo is the German shorthair pup. He is 9 months old.
No Terri he is not living outside! You should know I would never let any of them stay out. ;-) I even have chickens living in the sun porch! Just when he goes out to potty. He gets so cold in just a couple minutes. And sticks his head in the door.

Kristi , we are also getting frozen eggs. Seems as tho we run so much. Didn't get home til 7 yesterday. Went in at 4. Long day. And every egg but one was cracked :-(
Mine eat the hosta flowers. I don't necessarily think it is very nutritional. But must taste good. And you can get a great variety with all the different types. The flowers are only in bloom for a short time. But the leaves are so nice.

Jim, you should go to the party.

Hi, am new here but have been stalking for about a year :) I got my first batch of chicks in April when we bought our country house ( in Burlington) and they are too funny for words. I have polish, silkies, some naked neck mixes. Sadly, my luck with roos is terrible. I have 6 roos and 3 hens! gahh! SO far they are all playing nice, but I am planning on adding to the flock in the early Spring. I would love some more polish, bantam Americanas, and cochins! I have a huge coop.. yes, I took chicken math into account! yea! It is about 300 sq feet and they have access to a large outdoor run and free range whenever they want.. they just fly out! They all see pretty happy and I even got my first egg during the super cold snap last week.. crazy chickens! If any of you will have chicks in the fall I would love to add to my little flock. I may re-home 2 frizzle polish roos, one a golden lace and one a silver lace. Both are sweet and tame, but I think they will be happier with more hens and less roos. STay warm and happy new year!!

.I saw another on amazon it uses a bulb type thing that creates a vacuum when squeezed to suck up a seed and when you let go the vacuum is no longer and it releases the seed. There were 3 sizes of nozzles for itty bitty seeds like poppies and bigger for cukes and i think it cost about $25...
I am just looking for extra seed tapes

As for what flowers do chickens eat? I am thinking Nasturtiums I know they like dandelions but....There is also flowering Kale but the wild bunnies around my house have put that on the banned list....cause it never ever survives longer that 24 hours. Also Sun Flowers but they would have to leave the plant alone long enough to get the sunflowers to bloom and then you might want to keep the heads for the seeds

good early afternoon,,

collected 7 eggs so far..

found two guineas outside.. they must have been hiding out for a couple of days.. I put them into the chicken coop.. it is just a bit warmer in there than the guinea coop.. one of died within a couple of hours,, the smaller one seems OK..

thank you for the seeder ideas.. I like that hypodermic looking thing.. that is one of them that I found on line last night..

Dan, I have one of those walk behind planters,, but I have to put so many seeds into the hopper to make it work.. I am planting only about one 25 foot row of carrots ..

I bought seed tapes last year.. two strips about 4 or feet long.. we still have plenty of carrots in the refrigerator.. I never had nicer carrots ..

If this seeder works, I will make tapes of carrots, lettuce, and beets .. however, I can do beets by hand if I have to..

now I just have to make some sort of jig for making the toilet tissue tapes..

I was invited to another party for tonight,, now I have two of them that I don't really want to go to..

as far as what flowers to plant for chickens ?? just plant what you like,, and turn them loose,, they will choose what they like, and scratch the rest into oblivion ..

Happy New Year's Eve to everyone. I agree, nice web site that Dexter is on bl4. Hope he ends up with a nice country home with a lot of daily attention.

Jennies truck didn't start yesterday. She didn't realize that it has a engine heater on it. I plugged it in today for her and hope it fires right up. Think she prolly has the original battery in it too. She will give er a try later today when she is home. Beats a tow, even if she needs a new battery. I'll get er going tomorrow if it doesn't fire today.

Glad you stopped by Keri...welcome to the cheeseheads.

Nice to see you stop by Doc.

Hope 2014 is a good year for everyone!
