Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good afternoon, yep, chickens die.. you can depend on that,, that is why I keep two of each kind of rooster going into winter.. If you keep only one, it will find a way to die.. If you keep two, they both usually live .. Murphy's law ..

Mom Gill, stop in more often..
We are missing so many people from even last year,, Judge, FT, TomSki, Heather, I shouldn't have started listing them, , I can't remember them all ,, If your name should be here, then check in.
I know BarlRacer checks in, but doesn't post very often.. Hi >>

I just took the chickens more water.. It is so nice to not have to slip on a jacket, hat and gloves..

I do have to change the light bulb in the coop.. it burned out last week and Annie put one of those curly duds in there ,, A candle puts out more light that those useless things do .. with my bad eyes, I need LIGHT !!

......jiminwisc........
x2..I hate those curley lights..I know they save money..but I am blind and can't see..that has got to be worth more than the 12 cents.

Jim: I had two roosters...still lost one :-( sigh

Delish: Thanks for your post, I find you comments very interesting. WHat do you mean the "build up of death?" that clear thick liquid drool confused me....Any links for info on this and the higher testosterone? That would kind of fit as he was the only one of the two roos that had just started breeding the hens again. HMmmmmm Also, I usually only use Eprinext for one does (2 times 2 weeks apart) once a year, and strt my chicks on medicated feed for the first 8-10 weeks. Other than that never had a reason to medicate till this past fall. And it worries me now with using the Corid as much as I have-I don't want them building up immunity to this. Thanks again for the info!

Well been awhile for me but reading the last week or so has been interesting and so sorry to hear about the fire, although it appears you escaped with a whole lot less than it could have been. S Clarkl so sorry about the roof and all, certainly has been a rough New Years for you and yours.
I planted some seeds today. Impatiens, Coleus and Copra Onions from Jung's. Sad to say there were only about 30 Impatiens seeds in the packet so I need to buy another pack. But I do have extra onion seeds think right around 100, if someone wants them pm me and I will get the right out in the mail. I have never grown onions from seed before so looking forward to seeing how this all turns out.
Making Pot Roast soup today, was going to be split pea and ham too, but the ham got old... it had white spots on it so cutting that off and the girls will have ham for the next few days. It smells good, and still nice and pink...

Take care all!
Onions planted from seed tend to set bulbs better than onion sets.. I planted seeds one year and had the nicest onions I ever had..

DD#1 called me today and said that she planted about 30 onion seeds.. and they are coming up already.. (in the house ) .. she doesn't know what kind they are.. just some seeds she saved from onions from last year..

I am going to get some onion seeds and plant them this year .. If I do sets, I am going to get the bunches of green started ones instead of the dry bulbs..

I have not given up the idea of seed tapes..

I went to an apple seminar about 7 years ago.. the prof, from St Point was the speaker.. He said to figure out how many apples you actually need from a tree.. then thin out the tree of the small greenies and baby the rest.. there was something about putting plastic baggies on the ones you choose to keep, but I forget what that technique was.. I think it was to keep a moth off that laid the worm egg ?? anybody ever hear of this ?

well, you beat Murphy's law.. at least you have one rooster left..

dying mammals and birds expel bodily fluids prior to death sometimes..
Humans often, (only once) empty their bowels .. let me re-phrase that,,
It is not uncommon for humans to empty their bowels with a humongus BM..

so what your rooster coughed up probably wasn't the cause of death, death was the cause of it..

thought I better check in before Jim puts me on the mia list

Dixondale Farms is the source for onion plants in the market garden industry, great folks to work with and an excellent website for info on growing onions. I never had much luck until I started using their methods. The prices are fair if you consider they include shipping and excellent service including after the sale, also have a # of vids on the interweb that are very interesting.

Jim I just read an article on fruit growing in China,,,there they cull and bag the select apples/pears in a waxed paper bag,,,nothing about plastic though

this all worked as a reminder to finish getting my seed/plant orders completed

Delisha: SClark..sorry about the cave in..glad everyone is K..hows the baby?

I had a chance to check out the shed just before we trudged out into the woods to cut trees. Alot of damage, sheds a complete loss and from what I can see of the contents, too much broken stuff. The snow was waist deep out cutting, we got about a truck load hauled out before we all called it quits until next weekend. I should have enough to make it thru the week I hope, especially with all this snow we have coming at us tonight and tomorrow. Will it ever be over.....

Baby has one heck of a set of lungs on her. She was doing good for a few days and now back to screaming most of the day. I feel so bad for this little girl. It just breaks my heart knowing theirs nothing I can do to change things. I had no other choice but to put her back on Similac Soy, she just wouldn't stop with the diarrhea and vomiting besides the crying was worse than it is now. I have never seen a baby act this way before without little happiness. I'm used to normal babies and not much fuss or crying. She's nearly 3 months and they say it can last for up to 6 months. It sure has to suck crying all the time, I know when I do I get a horrible headache and snotty nose and such. Can't be much fun for her.

I noticed tonight that my bantam salmon faverolles hen has a swollen foot. Brought her in to lance it and noticed her 5 toe had severe frostbite - probably the cause if infection in her whole foot. I soaked it in Epsom salt water and gave her a penicillin shot. I'll do that for the next 4 days, I hope she recovers, but its seriously not looking good :( poor thing. This winter sucks!

(Flem or mucus)You are talking to the wrong person about links..my information comes from a knife and 35 years of butchering and about 10 young dead males in that 35 years. That is not counting both my grandparents, nor my in-laws. The clear liquid drool is common in death. ..sometimes it is not clear..sometimes it is bile color..sometimes it is even red. In humans it is usually brown.
I can look up 10 links that say one thing and than find 10 more that say something exactly the opposite. The internet is a pool of opinions.
(Testosterone)Have you ever noticed this time of year how some of the males get red legged and red feet before the other males?

(Mucus)Have you ever seen some of your birds cough after eating dry food? ACV is recommended for the mucus that is apparent in chickens this time of year for the mucus alone..don't ask me why ..I just know acv cuts mucus. case in point below..plus about 20 others on BYC
