Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

lol..funny

If you want..

I can hatch you out a variety of egg layers..
Olive eggers ( olive green)
Easter Eggers (blue green)
Marans(Dark Brown)
Terri can get you a Buckeye pullet
I could only get you a cross buckeye

The reason I ask is because it has been suggest I get some "practice female chicks" from the local feed store. In case I accidentally kill them all they will be cheap and easy to replace. This means that I won't have a lot of breed choices, so I was wondering which of the common breeds to get.

by all mean..practice your killing on the feed store chicks..lol..I am just teasing..
I am no help on feed store chicks..I know nothing about them..

Build your coop and buy a book about raising chickens.
Decide if you are feeding fermented, organic, cracked fresh grains, bagged feeds, medicated unmedicated. Vaccines or not..

Good evening all! Welcome Strevale...sounds like you need to take a look at the forum threads about raising your birds! There is a lot of information on the stickies and in the learning pages. My advice is to read all you can and then make your own decisions on how you want to raise your birds. Since you can only have four hens you need to think what you want them for. If it is for egg production I would go with some of the ones specifically bred for that. Of course they wont be around for a whole lot more than three years but you could do a sort of rotation so you always have 2 that are younger. This way you will always have eggs. If you have the cash to support 4 pets that may or may not be laying all the time then you can get whatever trips your trigger. When you are limited to such a small number they all turn into pets and you have to be ready for the heartbreak of butchering the old to keep yourself in eggs. Old layers do make darn good soup however! Good luck with your decisions! (PS) what are the small creatures you are holding in your avatar? I thought they might be chinchillas but I dont see the ears?

Man the wind is crazy out there tonight! Between the ice and that I could hardly keep myself upright doing chores tonight! Doesnt help that I am pretty sore from my falls last night! I have some wonderful bruising to show off for sure! My horse was sheepish today...

Tommy is not sneezing as much, but he still is...I have been working with the vetRx to see if that will help while I am searching for a humidifier. Thanks for asking. It is just so weird...he eats and drinks fine, normal poo...just a mystery!

OK--Heading to the tub to soak out some soreness...you all have a good night! I do not envy our friends in NWestern WI and their expected snowfall! Lots has melted here so far with the rain today...I hope it continues. Nighties! TerriO

lots of times the chickens you get from the feed mill are mislabeled,, or not labeled at all,, so you will not really know what you have,, then how can you make a decision on what you like ? just be patient and get the chicks from somebody who has the parents .. then you will know because they can tell you,, stay away from barnyard mixes.. it will take a couple of years for them to get old and die,, and with having only 4 chickens, it will be a long time before you can get the ones you truly want.. don't expect anybody to take your extra chickens,, be it roosters or hens.. everybody already has more than they are allowed, and nobody wants to take on any more,, especially if they are mutts.. I on the other hand will take any chicken.. but don't expect me to not eat them,,
and I will not spend good american $$$$ on mutts ...

patience, grasshopper ....

don't believe everything you read on BYC as fact.. if in doubt, consult with the cheesheads ..

we love those baby chicks

TO glad that tommy is still hanging around..I still think its mold..the Oxine nebulizer should help..you can mist him in the face in the mean time..will not be as good as a good vaporizer session.

Hey now! I work at a feed store and am in charge of ordering and selling chicks and they are labelled correctly ( except the hatchery ameraucanas, that are actually Easter Eggers). And you can get sexed day old chicks. So she can get tiny chicks and know (with 90% accuracy) that she has hens.

My driveway is now a lake, all the snow has come off the roof on the South side of the house...... when the dam breaks on the North side it is going to be loud; nobody will miss it if anyone is at home.

Deli, can you put me down for eggs? I would take an assortment of whatever you have, and I am willing to drive down to pick them up to avoid shipping. I'll let you know when, it will be a while so no rush. You will have to give me a price list too....

Dh has to go in to work at 4AM the next three days. Those 10 hour days do a number on him, he is getting too old for that kind of stuff.

TO, I hope Tommy feels better. He needs to make it to the Bash again!

Hi all. I've been gone for a long time, but trying to catch up. Things have been very busy here. We n gutted and added on to our kitchen, and are in the process of building a garage. The cabinets came in today and I am in love. Can't wait to see it finished.
The chicken and ducks are doing just ok. I am getting no eggs from the outdoor chickens, but four found there way onto the barn and have made it their permanent home. I get eggs from them every day. I know the ones outside are cold. I can't wait for spring!
Hopefully all is well with you, and I hope to check in with you all more often :)

We got babies!
