Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Even though my day has been really long, I thoroughly enjoyed the warmth. This morning I was making my breakfast when I heard my chickens causing a fuss. I ignored them for a bit figuring that someone was laying an egg, but it continued. I finally went out there to see them all waiting anxiously by the door...they just wanted out bad! For the past few months I had to coax them out of the coop, but not today. Today they called me outside so they could stretch their legs, scratch the ground, and sniff around. It looks like we will get another 2-4 inches Tuesday to Wednesday. I hope some fluke occurs and pushes it south. I am soooooo done with winter! I've even taken out the heat lamps and I am NOT putting them back in!!!!!!!!!!!!

DD13 is being a turd today. She is being obstinate, as she has waited to the last minute to get a project completed and is trying to break all of the rules in the process. I've gone upstairs twice telling her to put her project away and go to bed. Ugh.

I've got to get myself to bed now that it seems quiet upstairs!

I was at Tractor Supply, in Wisconsin, this morning, talking to a cashier about chicks... for anyone interested they are hoping to get their chicks in the end of the week.

Any how..... we were talking Buff Orpingtons and she stated that it would be difficult to get any Buff Opringtons from any breeder since breeders are having problems with low hatch rates. Has anyone else heard of this?

I heard that too. I was trying to get Blue Orpingtons else where, but by the time I get them they won't be old enough for the Waukesha County Fair. Maybe next year...

Hello all! I tried to catch up, but I had no idea how far behind I was! Nice to finally have a heat wave! We spent some time mucking the coop, and now the compost is full. I don't know where to go with it all, but we had to do something because the new neighbors will complain about every little thing and it was pretty ripe today. Enjoy the warmish week all!

Hi All! Short day on the thread today.

Well, Jon is quiting his job. There were some "ethics" issues that he and his boss talked about last season that, at the time, he agreed that once he took over that they would fix together. They even had a plan. Well, his boss has turned into an ***. The short time they were together this season (a couple of weeks) he's turned. From what Jon heard he's showing his true colors. Jon said he can't work for the company unless they fix the ethics issues and he can't work for someone who's going to treat him like sh!t. It's so sad, he really, really was hoping it would work out. When he called tonight I just wanted to hug him! They are only a few miles from a friends house that lives in Arizona. He's going to have her come get him. He'll stay there until he can get a flight to Hawaii. He has friends there and had planed on moving there before this Ren. Fair offer came up. He even will have a job when he gets there. Won't get to see him before he goes.

My heart has a knot in it! I totally understand his decision to go right away, but I don't have to like it.

Well, that's enough of that, some of the chickens did come out today! I got to butcher some roosters soon! Way too many for the girls.

Guess that's it.... Night All!

Sorry to hear that you won't be seeing Jon before he leaves for Hawaii - However, with the winter we have had, it's a great place to think about visiting. (as I have heard, never been there myself).

I'm with you on the rooster butchering, I have 4 rooster in one coop, they seem to be tolerating each other at the moment. - but way too many.

Slow on here for the last 2 days.

Goat baby passed this morning.ni really thought we had him out of the woods yesterday. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

He did get to enjoy the sunny warmth for a few minutes yesterday.

So Sorry Cuties! That is tough. I just had a friend that lost 3 goats due to smoke inhalation. His chickens and goats share a barn, there was a small fire in it on Saturday. He was able to get all of the goats and most of the chickens out but by Sunday all 3 had passed. :(

Hi All! New here, just found this thread. Thought id introduce myself. I'm going to be getting chickens very soon so I'll be around here a lot im thinking!
I'm married, have 4 kids, DS 12 DS 3.5 DS & DD 11months old. I was a SAHM up until 2 weeks ago. Now I work very part-time milking cows every other weekend. It's ok. Would rather be home w/the kiddos though. At least hubby is home w/them when im at work.

I have a Jersey/Guernsey heifer and an Oberhasli Milking goat. She's dry right now but due May1st! I can't wait. Never had baby goats before- So my next project is chickens. We eat probably 4dozen eggs/week sometimes more. Especially with the twins eating table food now, our grocery bill is only going up up up. So I figure its time to get some chickens-

Anyone here have any started pullets they are looking to sell?? I really don't want to wait the 20-24weeks from the start of raising the chicks to get eggs. I'd love to either buy laying hens or started pullets to get some eggs a little sooner.

I did find a lady that has some Barred Rocks for sale. they are 2.5months old. They weren't first on my list, but I think they would be a good start. There are some 4month old pullets on Purepoultry in Fremont,wi that I would like too. Just not sure I want to pay $20/each. But then again, Id start getting eggs in the next month or so, so they may be worth it.
Any suggestions on breeds? I wanted something a little unique but I also need something that's going to be a great layer and pay their way around here. I was thinking maybe a Wyandotte or Delaware? Or I know the Red sex links and other hybrid like that are really good egg layers right??

I'm looking forward to following/participating in this thread!! And hopefully looking forward to Spring.....sometime......if it ever gets here....Gosh Monday was SO nice- now only 20 something as a high tomorrow. Sad....So Sad....

Holy Cats! Just got into a very heated arguement with the guy who's selling the sick/parasite infested chicks. He called me a slut, physically threatened me and told me to pull my lip over my head and swallow! But instead of keeping my cool, I told him it was pretty bold to threaten someone he's never met and how does he know I can't make one phone call and have his place burned down? Why did "I'm glad I'm recording this conversation" not come out instead? Anyway, he got so mad at one point that he hung up on me. I have no tolerence for people who neglect animals and knowingly sell sick animals. Especially when its putting the buyer's existing flock at risk. Grrrrrr . . . . Mad at myself for not keeping it together.
