Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Evening All... Good luck with the new addition Jim. That guy in MN might be the one has a pbs film on the breed and dealing with wolfs...

it's a good flick for learning about the breed.

I know it must be tough Cind...but that's gotta be sweet going to Hawaii and having a job when you get there...kudos to Jon...hope he finds more happiness there. Glad he stood his ground and kept his word...you did good MOM!

Prolly see you in May Irish....have fun away from the store.

Jennies Bday today...we had a nice evening out for supper and conversation. Ahh, to be 30 again and have spring in my step..LOL!

Some more cold here...hope this ends before fall starts again...

Have Fun...bigz

rd200 why don't you go ahead and buy the barred rocks.. and also buy a couple of the $15 sex links.. that way you will have eggs right away, and also have fresh layers on the way up..
Or buy another breed of chicken if you are not sure about the barred rocks..
then, again, it depends on how many chickens you are allowed to have ?
Well, I guess I can have as many as I want!! or as many as my husband is willing to build tractors for :) I have 19acres, so I could fit a few hundred.....hahahaha. I was only thinking of getting 10-12 for now.
But your right, that is an option. I could get them from the two separate people on the same day and they would all be new to each other and their surroundings so that might reduce them squabbling w/each other a lot.
What's everyone opinions on feeders/waterers?? Which ones are the best. I want to minimize wasting food. I was looking at a metal hanging feeder and a plastic 2 or 5 gallon waterer. For 10 chickens would I need to get more than one feeder?? I was also looking at some homemade ones too that look like they would work. I guess it's however innovative my hubby wants to get and how much time he has to do it in will determine a homemade or store bought one. Thanks!

do you have to carry water ? water weighs roughly 8 pounds per gallon.. 5 gallons = 40 pounds.
chickens waste feed.....
stay away from shallow pans .. think deep dish .. don't feed them out of anything they can stand in or on.. flat topped hanging feeders are perfect for swinging on..wheeeee !!!!!

metal waterers rust out.. and they are a beotch in the winter when they freeze up..

again, stay away from anything they can stand on or in ..

I like the plastic 3 gallon ones with the red octagonal bottom that snaps on .. easy to carry in the winter.. they do green up in the summer if you don't use vinegar in the water..

...........jiminwiscimho...........

All very good points! Thank you!
Well, I don't have to haul water far at all. Just from my milkhouse and I usually have a hose hooked up to the Hydrain. But right now im hauling 25gallons/day for my other animals cuz the waterline to our barn froze up last week..... made it the whole darn winter w/o problems and NOW it decides to freeze up. Grrrrr......

Has anyone started their seeds indoors yet? Placing my order online tonight, hoping they will be here by next week so I can get things up and running by next weekend....

Cake was a success, there is less than a quarter of it left. The cherry filling was too sweet IMHO, I should have left out the extra sugar when I mixed it up. Other than that the whole thing tasted like a giant chocolate covered cherry!

I use about a cup per 5 gallons..  I never heard what amount is recommended..anybody here know ??
more is OK,  the chickens seem to like it.
it seems to prevent the green mold in the plastic waterers..

Jim, do u know by chance if that would also work for pheasants? I probably don't wanna try that for our ducks, with the heads completely submerging and eyes burning and all. But since pheasants don't dunk their heads it should probably be fine?! Any input is appreciated!

Okay, can't wait for a warmer day again tomorrow. Brrr. It was simply too chilly today after this nice warm up we had.

Sclark, do u have brown leghorns or did I get that wrong somewhere along the lines? If so, do u sell chicks or pullets?

So off to bed I go. Good night everyone!

No I don't have Brown Leghorns, I actually only have one white Leghorn left after this horrific winter. I have some pullets of different breeds right now and am planning by the end of this week to start my incubator. First fill will be BLRW, BLRW x Americana mainly. Might be a few from my other coops if they give me eggs, I have Speckled Sussex, but they aren't laying yet and neither are my BO. I have numerous different Bantams also.

Hi All!

That cake looks soooo good!

Jim.... I hate to say, but 2 intact males probably will never really get along, they may tolerate each other but that would probably be best case. Add a intact female and it could be bad. Maybe someone else had a thought on it. Glad you took him if he was in a bad place though!

Talked to Jon tonight. He talked to the owner of the company and understood why Jon was leaving. He can have his job back anytime he wants and the owner is going to try to clean up some of the ethics issues, per Jon's suggestions. He's also going to talk to his former boss. It's kinda hard to just fire the guy, he's been with him too long and (since he never had kids) he's kinda like a son. He knows he has "people issues" but is at a loss what to do about it. He is going to keep buying the quill pens from me, Jon said he had been looking for cheaper ones, but the quality is so bad. He said mine were the best quality he's seen anywhere

Jon also said that he has his ticket for Hawaii... he leaves the 26th.
