this is not true,,If you do it that way only the ones on the end/sides will be getting the whole 2in. The center ones will barely move.
My tomato plants did fantastic last year. Same with the peppers we planted. Honestly way up here in the frozen and snow covered once again Northeast we had a great garden crop.Tomatoes did not do great last year, anywhere.. I plant mine with a post hole digger..
I dig a hole about a foot deep, fill it with compost and bury the tomato plant as deep as the hole allows.. covering up the main stem.. If I neeed more stem, I take off the bottom branches ..
Unka Dan told me to do the pepper plants thusly.. I did, and I had a bumper crop of peppers,,

the book I read has you start 3 weeks before you plant with fertilizer and water to get the bale rotting inside and then fertilize throughout the season. It is **** near Hydroponics.JJ, did you poke any fertilizer in with the plants ? or did you just plant the seeds/seedllings in the bales without any supplements ?

Yesterday, I did go into the shop and built the jig for making seed tapes.. I am making the tapes short.. about 2 to 2 1/2 feet long.. much easier to handle in the garden with the wind blowing..
Last year I used commercial tapes which were about 5 or 6 feet long.. I got them in, but the wind did not make things any easier..
