Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

If you do it that way only the ones on the end/sides will be getting the whole 2in. The center ones will barely move.
this is not true,,

If you are propping the edge of the whole bator up on a brick or book or a board all of the eggs will be the same angle ..

it is the same as if you had a GQF .. the whole tray tilts..

you can raise the edge of the hova about 3 to 4 inches and it will work just fine.. trust me..

yes to the straw bale garden. We are doing it again this year with limited kinds of plants. We will have bush beans in the tops and squash, pumpkins and watermelons growing from the sides of 10 ten bales. Last year we tried broccoli and tomatoes too with very limited success. Broccoli does fine in the ground here and we are skipping the tomatoes this year(not worth the trouble for what we manage to get)

once I move my dirt floor coop on wheels off the winter spot we are putting a sunflower garden on that spot.

JJ, did you poke any fertilizer in with the plants ? or did you just plant the seeds/seedllings in the bales without any supplements ?

Tomatoes did not do great last year, anywhere.. I plant mine with a post hole digger..
I dig a hole about a foot deep, fill it with compost and bury the tomato plant as deep as the hole allows.. covering up the main stem.. If I neeed more stem, I take off the bottom branches ..

Unka Dan told me to do the pepper plants thusly.. I did, and I had a bumper crop of peppers,,

Yesterday, I did go into the shop and built the jig for making seed tapes.. I am making the tapes short.. about 2 to 2 1/2 feet long.. much easier to handle in the garden with the wind blowing..
Last year I used commercial tapes which were about 5 or 6 feet long.. I got them in, but the wind did not make things any easier..

Fish Fry Friday All....the tilapia is soaking in milk as I speak....tastes much better that way.

Yep, the store bought cabbage should work fine TO....our pork steak with kraut was wonderful last night...enough left for a sandwich on a ho made bun....

Jim, if you are keeping one of the females...that leaves 3....hope you didn't change your mind.

I ordered two different kinds of sunflower seeds from sandhill this year....if you want to try some of mine jj.... pm me your addy and I'll send you some.

Later...bigz

My tomato plants did fantastic last year. Same with the peppers we planted. Honestly way up here in the frozen and snow covered once again Northeast we had a great garden crop.

the book I read has you start 3 weeks before you plant with fertilizer and water to get the bale rotting inside and then fertilize throughout the season. It is **** near Hydroponics.
Beans we poke into some potting soil on top and the squash etc. we start in the house. I really liked not bending so far over to pick beans.

JJbendingoverislikefoldingabasketballinhalf

we have seeds thanks, we do just fine with BOSS by the 50 lb bag and seeds we save each year from a giant russian my son started at school 3 years ago.

If you would like to send me some hatching eggs for my preschool hatching projects. I like to show the kids what the chicks will grow up to look like, so pure breeds are best. How's that for begging?

Gee, had another 3 pages to catch up on you guys! Type more in each post then I don't have to read quite as much! lol

Yeah, yesterday was a weird day up North here. Morning was great, nice and warm (for our overcooled standards) the entire morning. I even saw bare areas of GROUND! Brown ground, but hey, nontheless, GROUND!

Then come noon it started misting. I thought, okay, mist is good, gives the ducks and chickens a well needed soft shower. RIGHT!

Got back from running some errands and it was sleeting. Next hour it had turned to big HUGE flakes that didn't stop falling til late evening!!! Grrrr...

Needless to say, all the brown and ground was gone, we had another 2 inches of snow to cover the cars, the entire driveway (again!) and it melting now is resulting in ice. Again.

Will this every stop?!? So far we have sunshine and mostly blue skies this morning. Hope it stays that way cuz I sure do NOT wanna see or feel or even find any more of the white crap coming down anymore!

Enough ranting for now...

The birdies are otherwise doing good. The pheasants got some bucket nesting boxes installed, with straw in it, and them buggers didn't have anything better to do than push all the straw out and toss it all over their snowy/muddy floors! Now we try to figure out a way to move the duck nest to a more secure and drier area, but not sure how the duckies will take to that. Plus, I gotta figure out a nesting box of sorts to put the nest in and off the ground, but not too far, otherwise our girls can't get in there to nest! So since this morning I have been running around and searching high and low for some plastic or wooden box that would work for that. I know I had an under-bed one, but I guess SO tossed it out and it got buried under the snow now. Just great... always when you need something most...

Anyone having any other idea for a low entry nesting box that is moisture proof and easy to clean? Obviously cardboard won't do... dang it...

Wildsam, idk how big your ducks are. But our call ducks use rabbit nesting boxes. Works great. If you have plywood layi g around, they are quite easy to slap together :)

Seller for my shaken, not stirred eggs has offered very nicely to send another dozen, so if these eggs don't develop I get another chance. :)

Wet, soggy day out there today, but at least it's not snowing! That was yesterday.

I hear Nasco is having a clearance sale...trying to resist. I could rummage through art supplies all day.
