Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Nice yard CS, love that the dogs are getting along.

I woke up around 4 AM with a killer headache. Whatever molds I stirred up with my raking yesterday do not agree with my system..... I was popping allergy meds and tylenol to get back to sleep..... took some generic Claritin this morning so hopefully the allergies are now going to be under control.

Spent the day at Fox re-potting plants. Then I took our busted bathroom sink to Home Depot and gave them all the info we had on the company that manufactures the sink so they can deal with them and get us a dang sink! I had to explain to them how the sink is a D shape and shallow in the front and deep in the back so the replacement the company suggests will not work with the cabinet....... so maybe a year after taking out the cracked sink we will get the replacement put in.......

Even though it is a bit chilly, it is still a beautiful day! Grilling country style ribs for dinner tonight.

That's what it looks like to me. Just let it be and see what happens.
try to keep it clean, don't let other chicks peck at it.. don't rub on it to clean it etc,,
If it can quietly absorb it, it should be OK.. You should know in a day or two..

don't worry if the chick does not eat or drink..

I just set another 99 eggs.. these are from Pang.. she has been coming here for quite a few years..
a very sweet lady.. has 8 children.. as set of twins and a set of triplets.. instant family..

I picked up 3 more guinea eggs today.. I will wait a few days to set them..

almost 18 dozen eggs in the bator as of tonigiht..

I didn't want to post the pictures of my CCL eggs at day 10 in 2 places... could you guys take a look and let me know if I am correct w.r.t. developing/not developing?

Thanks!!
I looked at your air cells in those eggs..it told me a few things..those were not fresh eggs..
foor your own educaton and knowledge save an egg a day in a special carton..when the carton is full mark air cells. From day one to day three you can have a hard time to see an air cell in lighter colored eggs.
In hatching eggs they should be fresh...In shipped eggs they should be almost body warm when sent..lol

as far as viability in your eggs..This is what I see with pictures you posted
you have one viable healthy looking egg. It has the smallest air cell too.
Two rings of death.
4 early quitters or infertile

You are on day 10. It is hard to have a singleton. See if you can find a few fresh eggs to hatch.

Who did you buy those eggs from?

Annie just took a call from our friend Brian.. He is the guy who had Dora as a pup,, then when Dora had her last litter a little over a year ago, he bought one of her pups from us..
This is all going somewhere, patience grasshoppers..

a few weeks ago, Brian was out in one of his pastures and off of his atv .. it was well below freezing,
(pick a day, eh ?)

anyway, Brian slipped and fell and broke his hip.. couldn't get up..
Dora's pup came to him and dragged him all the way to his atv..

there he was able to grab onto handles etc and pull himself in..

with his one good leg he drove to the neighbors and went right inside of their garage..

they heard the motor, came out and called 911..

Brian said he would have frozen to death if it wasn't for the dog..

so, Kendra and Vicki, you see ? I told you your pups are from good stock ..

I love my puppy..

DD13 called me at work to say we have 5 chicks out!!! There are 6 remaining, so hopefully she will continue setting on them.
She will set another day. Put food and water close for the chicks

This is an unabsorbed egg sac right? Will the chick absorb it or is it done for?
They will absorb that..I have three eggs left..I don't think they are going to hatch till tomorrow night..no external pip yet..very odd hatch this time. Yours are late too..I set mine before you left with your eggs.

Delisha,

I had the same thought that the eggs were old, especially with the air sacks being so large – but it could have been the air sacks had moved around during shipping to give the appearance they were large. But, it was a weird transaction all around.. I won the eggs from Swindledana in a swap, she would promise to ship on a specific day and then I had to contact her to find out she didn't... after a week and a half of this she said she went to ship the eggs and the post office dropped her package, then that following weekend she said that a predator attacked her hens so she got CrazyPetLady to send me eggs. Luckily, I didn’t' buy these. I thought getting eggs from a swap was a good way to get introduced to shipped eggs. There’s a few breeds I would like to get, either locally or through ebay and would probably have to get them shipped to me.

Thanks for the suggestions on marking air cells… I’m going to try that.. That’s a great way to understand how the air sack changes over 12 days.

Viability - I’ll take one, better than zero… hopefully it will be a rooster so I can keep it with my EEs so if I feel like hatching blue eggs they will stay blue.

When I set these 7 eggs I also set 12 of my own (BCMxBR) x BCM eggs… just so I can have dark eggs to eat. My BCMxBR hen produces a nice dark egg which is significantly different from all my other eggs.. the whites stand up significantly higher and is thicker. I’m not expecting all 12 to hatch, since my BCM rooster is watching over 17 hens… I’ve checked fertility of her eggs and they have been fertile, but who knows during the time I was collecting them. I set 12 in hopes of 4 hens.

Thanks for taking a look at my egg pics and providing your opionion.. I really appreciate it!

Hi everyone. New to sight AND Wisconsin. Not to mention this chicken business too. We live near Union Grove with 11 acres and have 3 head of horses and now of course all the chickens (10 layers and 10 cornish). I have decided to allow them to free range and they truly love it but worry so much about hawks and other prey as they are only 6 weeks old but have great cover of huge pine trees. But wanted to introduce myself as I am sure I will be picking your brains sometime soon regarding other concerns.
