Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Rainy Afternoon All.... Welcome Wooly, to the cheeseheads. Good folks here always ready to help.

The nursery called today with my 500 trees.....met up with zeke in New London and sent his 400 on their way home...we will planting trees in the days to come. Thanks zeke...your the best!

Collected 12 eggs today....that's good girls for sure. Time to separate breeds I'm thinkin....I'm way late with hatching this year...kina like spring, eh!

The lawn is starting to green already...except where I never raked leaves last fall....that should eliminate quite a bit of lawn to cut....way to many leaves to rake in the fall.

Good luck with the hatches....sounds like you have a bator full Jim....maybe time to fire up another?

Hope I can get some trees in tomorrow....I'll be callin turkeys for a friend on Sat morning....hope he gets lucky early....so I can plant trees then.

Keep em dry....bigz
Bigz-I used to plant trees every year, but not recently. I'm jealous of your eggs collection as I am only getting one egg a day right now as most of the girls have broody momma envy! I also didn't rake leaves, but now that I spent last Sunday scooping poop from the coop and raking leaves from the yard to put on the garden my grass will hopefully return.

Del- I gave up on the remaining eggs. I cracked them open and of the 5, four had not developed and one had stopped growing about half way through. So I have 4 chicks!

Jim-Theo seems to be recognizing his name now and is otherwise great!

Light rain on and off here today. I had hoped for more as we had soccer practice for all 3 kiddos and I had to run one of the practices.

Not much else besides this shooting pain randomly in my head this evening.

Love the pics....baby is getting big Sclark and pretty cute!

We had our household trauma last night. My son is,pretty good at recognizing when he needs to get some energy out or he will go bonkers so he puts Packer(the corgi) on a leash and goes running up and down our street a few times. Well last night the dog got under his feet and he ran(stomp) on his paw and now we have a very limping dog. He is putting almost no,pressure on it. We hoped he would be better today but he is not so I am off to the vet in the morning. Let's hope it is nothing serious. Then I am off to rummage sale a little bit. Finish the kids wardrobes etc. until they get horribly picky, I pick out their clothes and a lot come from rummages or friends.

Otherwise we pick up bees on Saturday.
Unk...will have to compare notes one of these days as we might be getting a baby flock of chanteclers. Gorgeous birds! Waiting to see about that.

Have a good night everyone

Just finished reading 170 posts!

Don't think I'll be responding to much.

Frenchy, welcome back and so sorry about the baby.

Heather, haven't you started cracking the whip with those boys yet?

cs, congrats on the hatch & the new pup being such a good boy.

Jim, Jim, Jim............ what can I say? Picking on me as usual, I see. Is nothing beneath you?

It sounds like you have every reason to be proud of your pups. I am so glad Brian has such a good dog. That could have turned out much worse. I hope he heals up quickly. That is why I preach to you all every year about never leaving the house without your cell phone. You just never know when something might happen.

Oh Jim, if Wooly is interested in BO chicks, one of us southerners could always bring some back from the bash?

So what kind of trees did you & Zeke get, Bigz? When we first got this place, DH & I ordered 1000 trees from the DNR. Red pine & white spruce. DH planted them all by hand & lived to tell the tale.

ya know. I hope you like it here.

Zeke! Sorry I haven't been around this week. I was sick, now DH is sick, had Dr. appt., DHs gig on the day before Easter (!), and all other sorts of fun & games. We also had to go to both families on Sunday for dinner so we were beyond stuffed and got to enjoy none of the gorgeous weather.

Plus we've had chicken drama, band drama, but luckily no family drama.

Staci, that GD sure is cute as a button. I am so glad she is sleeping better for you, and smiling! She has come a long way. Fingers crossed you get your driveway unblocked soon.

No rain down here today but it did pour like crazy overnight. We got 21 eggs today.

I think the girls are liking a few less roosters around.

Terri! Sweet dreams, all.

Hi All!

Well CC, that's what you get for being gone so long, sick or not!

Sclark.... so glad the baby and your daughter are doing better!

Nothing new here except one of the turkeys went broody, she's on top of one of the brood cages for the chickens, with 1 egg, I can't reach her.

Night All!

Hello all,
I'm a brand new member of the site, and brand new to raising backyard chickens. I've just bought a pre-fab coop, and am building an extended coop and run for the hens I will be getting this summer/fall. I am wondering where around Madison I can go to get good stock Buff Orpington hen chicks this spring, or hens this fall.  Also, If there are any tips that spring to mind (I've read all the forums on that subject, but there's always more, right?)
Any suggestions?   Thanks!

Wooly...probably not show quality and more hatchery stock, but I know that the Hardware store out here in new glarus has about week old, buffs. I know that some,of the farm and fleets are getting in many chicks and probably BO's around May 7th...

Welcome though! There are a number of us in and around Madison and we all encourage the addition of more birds at all times! Lol

My MIL told me yesterday that the insurance company through her employer is coming to work and doing blood draws on everyone. Ummmm, NO! You come to my job and try to stick a needle in me so you can evaluate my health and tell me what I need to change, that needle will be in your eye. Why are the American people letting their rights be stripped away like this? Then, my husband went to the doctor and they asked if he wanted is "mandatory" yearly physical. He said no and they couldn't believe it. I am not a car that needs regular maintenance for my warranty to be valid. I seriously need to get out of this country.

BBP they have been doing that to us for years. Follow along nicely or cough up a $900 per person fee for the year. I cannot afford to pay them $1800 so I go along.... but I refuse to make it easy for them. And I agree, this is invasion of privacy and a breech of Doctor Patient confidentiality.

So I decided that I was sick of taping the Hova-bator in order to keep the temps right so I decided to tear it apart and put the guts into the steak cooler I made into a bator. The turner fits perfectly so why not. It's holding temps steady, way better than the Hova did as the foam is nearly 3 times the thickness.

And more of the bators Full as you can see.

Heres some of the chicks hatched a few weeks ago thru the ones hatched yesterday. Sure are cute.

BLRW

BLRW, EE, SS and still waiting for the info on the 2 yellow and black ones as they look like Americana cross but was told they are not.

BLRW day old

I'm wondering if my EE will feather out looking like the blue laced. One on left is BLRW right is Americauna x BLRW.

Easter HAL chicks with this weeks babies.

I figured since you all ate up Anellias photo I'd share a short video I took of her Monday morning. She's such a card with her expressions.

Sorry it's sideways, I still don't know how to operate my phone right to take videos. Hope you enjoy.

Woolychicks - I am in the same situation as you. The only place I can think of is Abendroth but I am not sure of the "Quality" http://abendrothshatchery.com/egg.html. I am looking for bantams so I will either be going there to pick up a few (I am in Columbus) or I will be going to the Watertown Tractor Supply Company and hope they have a better selection of batams.

Does anyone have pictures of their hens from either TSC or Abendroth?
