Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Why would you need a new Queen? I did some digging, what I found is you could have a drop in honey production but the drones keep up the colony morale..... It is all very interesting.

You can always try to get one to sting you, then you would know for sure. ;)

I tried to do bumblefoot surgery on my hen tonight, but I didn't find the hard, yellow thing that I was supposed to. I guess I'll keep soaking her foot and start penicillin injections. She's had bumblefoot for a while and is starting to lose weight. I also have a hen that has a full, hanging crop all of the time. I don't think its emptying. A raccoon killed my dorking hen and I'm pretty sure this little rooster killed my bantam faverolles hen today. I found her in the corner if the coop with a bloody comb and he was on top of her. She had just died. Her head and feet were blue. Sometimes I don't think chickens are worth it.

And Judi, it's Faverolles with an "s" whether its plural or not. Just like Marans.

I have a lot of new faces looking at me from the hatcher..

there were enough guineas hatched by 5 o'clock so that guy could take 8 instead of 4..
now he could have about 20 more..

I am going to leave whatever is in the hatcher in there until morning. the tv's are getting too crowded..

the puppy is throwing a fit upstairs.. I wonder what is up with that ??

I got my garden dragged today.. I hope to be planting soon.

got the lawn mower started after charging the battery..

next I will start the tiller.. It is a beotch the first time each year..

Hi All!

Well, tonight was the first time since we left Fri. that I checked on the coop (since the sore tailbone was an issue) what a mess! At least everyone seemed alive, although the 3rd broody seemed to have gotten kicked out of her spot by the turkey and left to the mercy of the roosters. Poor girl. Jasmine somehow got out of the brood box and was trying to set on the eggs by the turkey. Pepper took over the eggs Jasmine was on so I don't know how long the 2nd pile was hen-less.

Also, not as much feed as I thought should be gone, was gone, but the scratch seemed to have taken more of a hit than should have been.

Jim... congrats on the hatch party!

Well... Night All!

RBerry, I wanted to let you know that I was the lucky winner of your sachets and towels. I had to wash the quilt for our bed last night (thank you cats) and dried it with one of your sachets. Lovely! I highly recommend the fellow Cheeseheads check out how they can get one themselves!

It sure is quiet on here today, everyone must be gardening.

Good morning--no gardening for me-it's raining here! We had styarted to unload hay last night and had about 1/4 of the wagon left to do this morning. I am glad it only sprinkled last night or I would have had to dry it out somehow,

This evening I am taking a road trip up to Cuties' place. Bringing some eggs and picking up some chicks! I think my eggs in the bator would be hatching soon...I really thought I wrote down the dates on my calendar...it is probably on the one in my fried computer! Congrats on your hatch Jim...sounds like you have the system down!

I planted a little bit in the garden yesterday and then went to the RLAC kids' garden to plant some more. I found a bunch of volunteer tomato plants in my garden so I donated them along with a few of the broccoli plants from Amyable. THe kids really like to pick and eat right out of that garden for sure! I am also doing a once a week cooking class there. I know we will be doing the Quinoa Garden recipe for sure! The kids had fun at the bash helping to make it. (at least I thought they had fun...) I am going to teach how to make Hollandaise Sauce too. Maybe pie crust? ANy body else have any ideas for me?

OK--I better head out and see if the puppies need more food. I found a spot in the barn that I can make into a kennel space...then I dont have to bring them into the basement all the time.
Have a good one! TerriO

Am enjoying a couple of days of "city" life before heading back to all my beloved critters and the black clouds of mosquitoes. Not looking forward to it at all...

Did I mention yet that they are HORRIBLE this year? A woman even said that nothing seems to help to keep the blood suckers away. No spray or other home made tricks. Gotta try horse spray on my dogs at least since they really don't like staying in the house with the nice weather, but have sores from the bites and chews or skeeters, flies and ticks. Just really bad this year. And I thought that the long winter/cold would have killed at least SOME of them?!? But then the flooding and all the standing water... Urgh!
