Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks everyone. :(

At least I went outside and cleaned all the condos and food and water dishes, and also the pool. The others all seem to be fine so far. But keeping an eye and ear on everyone as it's quite chilly today. Disinfected everything inside again and hope that does it. Don't want
This happening again.

Sorry for your loss Sam. Could it possibly be moldy food ?

CC: Good info: I originally bought 3 wire rabbit cages to set up like that...only managed to get one of the larger ones put together! Did yoou have any issues with them accepting the cardboard box for nesting over a covered nestbox? Do you leave the door open up until day 18? or...? What about after chicks hatch; when do you open the cage door?

Ang, no, they didn't have any problems with the box. I set the box in front of her, then put the eggs she was sitting on in it. She climbed right into the box & sat down. She isn't the only hen I have had do that. As long as she can sit & not be disturbed by the other hens wanting to use her nest, I think they will be content. But not all hens are the same, either.

I do not leave the door open on the cage, but I don't usually put them in the cage until they have a week or less to go. I close her in so the other hens can't try to use her nest. And like Bigz said, I keep food & water within a necks reach of her nest.

I think I only had mom & chicks in there for a week or two. Then I moved them to a larger area with only a couple other birds in it. I used the cage first because the larger area has fencing too big that the chicks could get through, away from momma.

Those metal rabbit cages are really nice because you can stack them on top of each other to save floor space. But they are a devil to put together with those jay clips.

Ang, good luck with the broodies! They should be just fine.

It is official, the top of the Catalpa tree is dead. We have leaves sprouting off the trunk and a little bit up at the branching of the trunk and that is it. Talked to a local Nursery and they said we could lop off the crown and not worry about the tree, it will return and it will not be affected structurally. I am glad it is alive but peeved we have lost the past three years growth on the thing.

Made two batches of strawberry jam today. I have a freezer full of berries I never used this winter so I better start using them up!

good afternoon,, didn't get a heck of a lot done today..

I planted 60 pounds of seed potatoes in the green house.. I still have to spread the straw. but it looks like it is going to rain soon, and it got quite chilly with the strong pre rain wind ..

I found the puppy lying behind the big stone crock and half under the pie rack.. If she had not made some noise, I would never have seen her..

I gave her the two pills.. and fried a couple of eggs.. opened up a package of meaty burger dog food. she would not eat.. very unresponsive .. Annie cut up some ham .. that she ate with gusto. must be my presentation ..
I mixed up some puppy milk replacer .. she lapped at it a little ..

Annie gave her a shower and I dried her off.. (the puppy) ,, then I gave her a good fluffing with the blow drier .. at first she didn't like the air on her head, but by the time I worked from her tail to her head, she let me blow it right in her face ..

I think she is milking this for all it's worth ..

CC, what are J clips ?

I built a couple of cages from scratch,, I used hog rings .. there is an inexpensive tool that goes with them that looks like a pair of pliers .. works like a dream ..

we usually have a broody or two.. but today we have the broody from heII .. she snarls at me from 3 feet away from the nest .. and she is a buff orpington.. they are usually so laid back ..

moved the trailer closer to the coops.. going to start cleaning them a little at a time.. the guinea pen will be first.. that is where the oldest chicks are.. they are feathered enough to be let loose in the big room.. soon I will shut off the brooder ..

I have to catch 15 guinea keets from the other brooder pen tomorrow.. Zeke is going to pick them up for a guy he works with ..

I came home from the zoo today and found feathers if all different colors in my yard. It was some sloppy attempts at killing for sure. I see my lavender orp has no trail feathers. My blue cochin is missing and her feathers with chunks of skin are up in the neighbors yard! If I find out their dog was over here again we will have issues! That Cochin was my son's show bird. I'm going it to do more investigating.

So one chick hatched so far with the crazy constant broody of ours..now another one is going broody..bonkers! So anyway...one hatched, still three eggs under her due any day I knew they were a few days apart... Here is the silkie/EE mix. Looks like a silkie with cool colors. M is in love!
