Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yes, I can not imagine why hubby and I married lol he absolutely loves hunting. And I can not stand to be around it. It amazes me that when we had goose goose, he nursed her back to health. And trained her to fly again. But he can turn arounfld and hunt to kill the next one :/ I will never understand men ;)
That is exactly how I work it with our roos.

I think hunting is a state of mind, just like you not being able to kill a pet chicken.

Nature is cruel and hard. I can hunt because I know that population control is necessary. When I was young, I saw a deer yard during the winter. We had a really deep snow with alot of ice storms that year, and the little ones were starving to death because they couldn't dig for dry browse nor reach the tree branches that were chewed too far overhead by the bigger deer. The entire grove a aspen nearby was stripped of bark as far as they could reach. I have also seen a doe walking through the woods with some pretty severe wounds from a coyote pack attack. I don't think she survived, but I know that she suffered. Makes freezer camp seem a pretty good way to go.

I completely agreenwith you. Hunting is very necessary. I just don't like to see it. Grateful ni live when I don't have to :)

wyoDreamer: I completely agree with this also. There are hunters and then there are hunters. I grew up around some testosterone competing males that turned me off from hunting. I saw too much lack of respect of life and the training to their children of this that left a bad impression.
Now though I am around hunters that have a true respect for life. They do take pleasure in the hunt but at the same time are careful to ensure there is no suffering. I have seen Mike crabby/upset all weekend over a "waste" kill he found in the woods, etc.
To clarify, I do not condemn anyone that butchers, and do wish I could get past some of my own sensitivity to the issue of raising some separately for meat. Meanwhile, I don't butcher.

Good afternoon everyone!
Been a few days and I'm sure none of you missed my entire book postings... ;)

Nothing much new here. Everyone is growing (especially mamas babies!) and staying out of the heat, dirtying their pools within moments. But that's why they're ducks! And after we mowed the grass yesterday the Anconas didn't even really wanna go in the pool to swim. Lol

House is almost empty now. Rouens are outside in his duck house (which he put a bay window(!!!) in yesterday. And I always wanted one for myself, grumble. Now it's only the sharp clawed Scovies inside. I look like I've been in a cat fight...

Just heard that his brother is taking the pheasants to the Rusk Cty fair, so we can concentrate on the ducks. Really hope we can sell a few. Don't wanna but the feed cost is killing us.

And repeat for the extra slow ones again please?! How do you make fermented feed, and how do you keep it going?

Also, does anyone have any ideas on how to feed chickens without them scratching all the ducks food everywhere? I'm sick of all the waste and the babies get chased away before they're able to eat. Not nice.

Guess that's it so far from the hot and sunny northwest. Til later...

Oh, and btw, I could not butcher anything that I fed and raised (animal wise) either. And as long as they keep the dead deer away from me, I'm good with keeping the population down. And maybe shoot some of the remorseless joy shooters too...

Fermented feed:

Hello all! Just checking in to skim the thread.

I've been pretty busy in spite of the fact that the garden doesn't exist this year. Looks like I have at least two egg eaters in the flock - UGH!

Here's something that goes along with some of the latest conversations. The balance of nature and the need to thin the herd of deer. Enjoy:

A pretty nasty storm is headed this way so I'm going to unplug what I can while I can. Stay safe!!
