Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Got it Jim.
Unk, do yours get the meat source daily? I am going to research my area to see what I can find. Would it be the same to get a meat based dog/cat food? Or would there be other things in there I wouldn't want to give? I am thinking of the soft type. I wonder how pricy that would be. Also, is red type meat the best?
We are going camping this weekend. And have a young girl taking care of the animals. She gave is familiar with our place. And we will only be gone Saturday night. But I am nervous! Hopefully it goes well.
Zeek stopped nlast night to grab some of his birds. I wanted to make chores as simple as possible while we are gone. It was a short visit because some of the 4-hers were over for some extra training before state.
lost a lb chick yesterday. I didn't think it would make it. It didn't habe splay leg. But its feet looked a little funny. And it just didn't seem strong.
Cs, it is nice to have a friendly chickie. My favorite BLRW roo lets me walk right up to pet him :)

Cuties you have all meat you need right on your farm..start butchering your darn chickens..I do feed corn in with my Fermented feed, but very little. A 50 lbs bag lasts me a month with 200 chickens. The corn is GMO free and expensive, so is the grains. Corn is usually filled with GMO so you have to be careful. If you can't find GMO free it I not worth it to feed to the chickens. Infertility issues can be attributed to feed in some cases that are high in GMOs, and we also know wht GMO does to humans.. This time of year I feed little grain. Most of the feed is greens and meats.Plant kale, clovers, oregano, and chick weed, make areas that they can find bugs by making piles of rotting fruits, vegetables, green grasses, and old bedding that encourage bug growth, and you will be fine. The plants are prolific, grow fast, have good nutrition and vitamins too. For 200 LF adult birds I do not use more than 50lbs of feed a week average yearly. In the winter I do feed more grains.

Stacy, please email me [email protected] and I will get you the name you need to contact. I actually can give you two names. Both have great stock. If I still had them I would order from Ruth with out hesitation. Backyard chicken site sucks lately and hard to get on.

I agree with Uncdan

Sorry for losses everyone. Things here are ok. Adjusting to new job. Someone gave us some tickets to packer family night so ewe are planning a little excursion up there this weekend.
And all of a sudden my bantam leghorn who is tiny is going broody. I don't know if she can fit more than an egg under her.silly girl.,she keeps trying to sit com the other girls eggs and falling off.
Have a good time on your family outing, sounds like fun. We are going to the Packer/Bear game in November. Nephew-in-law has been helping us out so much and really wanted to go. He's been working off the price of the tickets and feels like it's a once in a life time thing, at this price

. . . YUP! Too funny about your bantam. Our little blue Wyandotte is broody again and Susan from Cluck is going to stick a few eggs from her Blue Orp roo (not sure which hens). All I know is this should be interesting.

good morning,

Mel, just remember that airstream was one of the first travel trailers.
You need a substantial vehicle to pull one..
Once you figure in the price of the unit and the gas to pull it, staying at a motel might be less $$$ in the long run..
and the vehicle you pull it with has to be large enough for everybody, because you cannot ride in a trailer,, (I don't believe).. I might be wrong ..

.....jiminwisc.......
Jim you are correct about no passengers in a travel trailer while driving.

you can use meat scraps but then you should cook it first, I like simple if possible

the feed I am using comes from "Big Gain" they have a couple plants in WI and 2-3 in MN, local feed store sells that brand and they order for me. I think the gamebird products come in from the MN plants. Dealer locator on their website.
We bought the grower feed for our meaties from the hatchery where we got the Black Australorps this spring. They send their grain to Big Gain in Lodi for processing and we are quite pleased with it so far. It's date stamped so we know it's fresh, anyway fresher than that we were getting from F&F, plus higher protein. Looking like we'll have bigger weights this year

I feed the fermented feed after getting advice from you and others on here last year and I'm now planning on incorporating grain sprouts. I'd be interested in your input on that.

Cuties: Meal worms are also a good source of protein. They're very expensive to buy, but easy to grow. I would be careful about the dried meal worms - most all of them come from abroad and since what's digested goes into the eggs we eat . . .

IMO. We've also been throwing the weeds we've been pulling (bumper crop this year) into the chicken run. It's more greens and sometimes they'll find a grub or two in the batch. And don't forget watermelon rind our's love it. In fact Rod gave them an entire melon the other day - whoa talk about a feeding frenzy!

Del, you know better ;)
I did try the fermented feed. And it was nice to not waste so much. But I think I overfermented. Because I lost a bunch of chicks, and then switched back to dry. And they stopped dying.
Ours free range. And eat all the grass/weeds they like. Bugs too! I also give them the pumpkin and gourds. That is another one of those feeding frenzies ;)

Quote: sprouts are better than the whole grain..but remember fermenting the grains makes them more bio available anyway. I used to sprout before I fermented.

Cuties..over fermenting would not kill a chick..but not keeping the grains covered in water would. The .grains must be kept under 1 inch of water or you will end up with something other than fermented feed.

Sprouts: I do this in the winter when they dont have access to free ranging grass, bugs etc. I soak Black sunflower seeds over night and drain in the morning. Then I rinse them morning and night each day for 3 days. I start a new jar daily so they get sprouts almost every day.

I have been buying watermelon at least once a week. My daughter cuts in up and leaves a healthy amount on the rinds. Then stick the rinds in the fridge and have her give the cold watermelon rinds to them mid day when its hot out-helps them cool down :-)
