Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yes this is my one day off a week so I am working to get produce put away for,the fall. This weekend and. Hoping most is done today I did lots of canning and dehydrating and now making some zucchini bread. Now to dig potatoes later so those are done. Apples also need to be harvested but they are buggy so it will be a pick and choose thing. The rest go to the chickens. Missing fresh eggs so need to get my light set up in the coop.

Sigh..ok five minute break is over...back to work in th kitchen

Hello, well the geese made it to the pond, well out further into the pond anyhow, me and the husband were watching from the upstairs house windows, was hilarious, all three went out, sooo excited and nervous like, trying to bob around, put their heads under and eat?? so they'd flip completely over backwards, then they'd get all excited and just start swimming around underwater and popping up here and there. then back to the side of the pond very quickly, and then back out again. we're hopeful that they'll keep venturing towards the middle. we had 4 canadians land last week and thinking that gave them some more courage, they watched from the house the whole time... by the time they were done in the pond and ventured back up to the house they were looking pretty pleased with themselves.

otherwise dreary here today.... heard people talk that this winter is supposed to be worse than last, cripes I hope not.

Came home to a missing chicken (with feathers everywhere) and a dead call duck hen. She was dead in the pen with her neck all eaten. Seems like a bird of prey killed it. So, I'll have to keep everyone in their small covered pens for a while. I go through this every fall. Usually they take my bantam cochins :(

We've had a redtailed hawk patrolling our place the last couple days, they are usually all over anyhow, but this one has been sitting on the barn, or else on the driveway yoke (one of those texas style yokes you drive thru) I haven't let the chickens out at all, totally paranoid (in their covered run only....) hoping my geese are too big, they are huge, so thinking they're safe... but him sitting so low makes me nervous... sorry for your loss blackbrook. :(

When do you know the apples are dehydrated enough? I don't want them to spoil. How do you store them? I have two dehydrator and that apple peeler thingy. They were $5 at Menards on Labor Day. Bought two. Can't find the first one we have.geez now I have 3!

BBP do you think it could be the weasel?

The feathers weren't from the chicken, she's still alive. they were from the duck. Her feathers were inside and outside the pen. Almost in a circle. Then her body was laying about 20 feet away inside the pen. Her neck and back were eaten. Her feet were flat, stretched out behind her. Makes me think a hawk jumped on her back. But I am scared to leave them in their covered runs they will all be easy pickins for a weasel. So, I'm not sure what to do :(

Sorry for your loss. When we've had a loss they just disappear. We've seen a fox a few years ago. Knock on wood nothing this year. Do you have a trail cam? I think I might just put one out for the heck of it to see what goes on at night. The neighbor just killed a few skunks last week so don't have to worry about them. At least those two. They met me in the road a few weeks ago. Boy did they get respect. Their tails were standing tall and real bushy. Almost didn't realize it was a skunk.
