Hi All!

Not a good bird day here. When I went to go feed I saw one of the keets run along the edge of the coop and under the stack of pallets (and weeds) Didn't see mom or the other keet, didn't even see the one by the time I got to the pallets.

Fed, watered, went to go get the turkey off her empty nest..... no turkey! Only 8-10 soggy feathers where she should be. Too wet to look for blood.

I started out with 2 Toms and 4 hens, I'm down to 3 Toms and 1 hen

Just as well I guess since I can't sell any keets.
I also have a cat missing in the last few days.

Angiebubs, we xid a lot of breeds last spring. I found cheap used dog kennels. And hubby set them up in the barn. It was a ton of work to change thT frozen water a few times a day. It is an old dairy barn. And no way to reall heat that area enough to keep water from freezing. And our chicks needed to be hatching January 1 for the kiddos to use for fair. I downsized the different breeds quite a for this year. And will not breed the types that the kids will not show u til the water does not freeze! It was too much work. And we got a little wore out. The chickies became a little less enjoyable that way.
Frenchie, so nice to hear from you. But sorry it was mostly bad news. I think you are taking good care of your pony. And it will heal nice

I use an extension cord out to the barn currently during the winter. The barn used to have mini horses so the fences between stalls (smalls size stalls) are all still there. So just like my current main coop its a matter of adding a wire wall between and a door. (And finding time when chickenship can help. I was hoping to have a electrical line run out to the barn-not sure finances will allow that right now though.

I agree about the part of not wanting them to become any less enjoyable. And keep telling myself to slow down that there will be a lot more available again in the spring (Then I go look at the photos again and struggle all over) I haven't responded back to the owner either way yet.

They are SUPER nice quality. I would have a hard time not getting them. Especially since nice ones seem to be hard to find.

Well my BLRW bantam egg order ended up getting cancelled due to now eggs so I said to heck with it and ordered a trio, they should be here next week. My Foley BLRW cockerels will be here tomorrow afternoon sometime, can't wait. Also should be getting my WW eggs and EE tomorrow or Saturday. Candled the eggs I found in my coop that were over 2 weeks old and 8 made it into lockdown lastnight and one is already externally pipped. Weird, I haven't had any little chicks in the house for a whole week since early spring. Got one eggs today from the coop so I'm assuming the girls will all be starting to lay again soon, molt sure puts a damper on the egg production.

I need someone to talk some sense into me................

I currently have 23 hens of various breeds, a lav orp roo, and 3 pullet/9 cockerel salmon faverolles (planning on re homing 7-8 of the boys eventually) that I want to start breeding in the spring. NOW found a trio of great quality SF for a great price and I am sooo tempted !!! I've to build/wire the bachelor pad...and this would mean wire/build coop in the barn asap!!! I managed to re home 1 cockerel so far....and am trying to balance growing the boys out to see quality versus re homing some before winter....Otherwise I will have to over winter this many in a separate pen.

In other news...thinking its time to start looking for another job! Love the environment but the hour plus drive each way is killing me, workloads been heavy and found out today they are reallocating 50% of the time the other person who assists me with supporting my area for another project. It has felt like it should be Friday since about 10 am Monday morning

Pass them up. You are struggling to place and store the males you have. Winter is not the time to bring in adult birds. bla bla bla..So if you have the time, space, and resources, get the birds if you want them.

We used the stalls for breeding pens for the light brahma. Every other breed (I thought) would likely jump out.
It was ni e to not have rain. We lunged both horses and rode Thunder. Blake was so excited when he came out and Thunder followed him everywhere
dozer has taken a liking to the turkeys these past few weeks. He was so good all summer. I thjnk it is because we have not been out as much. Did some work with him today.
Dinner will be late for sure!

It must be old home week... I am finally back.. with a LONG story to tell, mostly sad, but with some good as well.

We spent this last winter with no electricity and no heat. Our horses and chickens have always been at a friends so they were never in any way in jeopardy. We had a generator till it quit working, then bought another that worked when the guy showed it to me and then didn't work. We got a cabinet heater which is a propane burner thing with three settings and is rated for indoor use. We literally lived in the living room all winter, with both of us working.
April came around and we started to look for a new place to live so rehomed 90% of all our chickens to the neighbors and to Joan who's farm the chickens have been at for all these years. Left my job at O'Reilly's and went to work at a big rig repair place making good money.
We found a heck of a great place, close to Verona/Belleville and hop/skip to New Glarus. Renting a room in a home with 20 acres of woods and prairie restoration that didn't quite take. Wonderful housemate, nice BIG room.
AND he has chickens, has always wanted horses here. Has a dog and two cats, so we brought our dogs and our cat, then the horses and got a few old hens from Kristi in New Glarus, (its funny because when they were younger we gave them to her). We got a few good laying hens so have a nice group again. My little blue truck died in the driveway as I was driving home in July or Aug. DH's car's water pump is toast and you have to drop the engine and replace the timing belt as well, so not worth it to fix it as it is a really crappy car.
Got the fencing up, brought the horses home the first week of August, found a neat Curly gelding and a mustang mare for our friends who already had one horse that is boarded with us.
On Sept 12, they got out and went into the alfalfa field at the egde of the property, I couldn't understand why they didn't just hang out there. I drove out into the field and found them near the road... I couldn't turn them in time and 2 got hit by a car, my mare Indi who I had had for over 10 years, and my friends little draft cross that I helped her find. Both died.
A week or so later I saw an ad for some saddlbreds and went to take a look, and a week later brought home all 4 that she had, a teen had rescued them and was in over her head. They were starved and are still quite a bit underweight. But one was super well broke and I asked my friend who had her little draft cross die, if she wanted her.. and yes so that is a good match.
So we had some real bad happen and some great good happen.
Our current flock between us and our house mate is a trio of Iowa Blues, 2 Australorps, 1 barred rock, 1 dominique, a delaware, a buff chantecler, 2 EE's, a barred bantam cochin, 2 seramas, a really big silkie cross/RIR, a production red, a BR/EE roo, 2 blue splash marans roos, 1 jaerhon, one bantam EE type and i think thats it.
We of course had to name the main rooster who is an IB Captain cluck and his girls are the Cluckettes, then there is Tweedle Dee and Doo the Australorps, Barrry the BR, Domino the dominique, Patsy the Delaware, Chantilly the chantecler, Legacy which is one of the EE's , Curly is the other one, Mocha is the little bantam cochin, Nikla Tesla is one serama, and the hen is Madame Curie, Speckly hen is the silkie cross, Red is the PR, Dinner is the BR/EE roo, the marans are unnamed, the Jaerhon is Magic, the bantam EE is Falcon and I think that covers every one.
So its been a whirl wind year... And the second week of Oct.. I lost my job... sigh...
OH.. and I haven't been able to get online here under my normal username but I hope Admin can work on that. AND my DH just found our other laptop which has Win 7 on it as our older one can't get online with the WiFi here.
So you willl see me on here TONS more...lots and lots more!!

Glad to see you back!

Well, nothing new. My back wouldn't let me go look for turkey hen remains, I just hope whatever got her won't come back. I guess I ask my grandson for his live trap.
