Huntress, we had that issue with a bc at 4-h. It was a long road. And lots of work for the owners.
We taught her to herd on command. And to stop on command. It is a lot like the leave it game. No reward until the attention is COMPLETELY off of the herded item. Meaning you need much more focus on you instead of the herding. So I suppose it is hard seeming when the herd item is feet. We used a giant rubber ball at first. Had her chase it and tell her to get it. But kept a line on. So we could correct from a distance when she was told to leave it. Then the leave it part should be transferred to any item herded.

Cold and Windy Day to everyone...thanks for all the kind words sent my way...Cheeseheads are the best you know!!

I hate those double wall metal waterers. I have one that is only used outside during the summer. It's in a level spot and leaks all the time. I've tried everything to make that stupid thing work properly...bad engineering for sure. You can simply place a 12x12 ceramic tile on the heater base and then it's not to hot for the plastic waterers....they are only a $1 or so at menards or fleet.

I need straw too...can't find any as usual...I guess tractor supply has some for like $4 a bale..

Think I'll put a wanted ad over at the livestock barn, in hopes of someone with some to sell at a reasonable price.

My heating element went out on our 5 year old electric range oven. I called and ordered a new one....need to take a road trip to Shawano and pick it up before the weekend. $50 for the element....not terrible, but they should last more than 5 years I'm thinkin. The range was not a cheap one either.

Last I checked Farm and Fleet had heated waterers on sale. Can't remember the price of the chicken type waterers, but the gallon dishes were about $15

Thanks Cuties. I don't know if there's any herding dog in this one's background. He was doing it to our other dog who put a quick stop to it by spinning around and growling. When I started walking him he would heel or follow and I was thrilled that he wasn't pulling on the leash till I realized he was nipping the air at my heels. He also went after my boyfriend and tried biting him from behind. He seems very afraid/untrusting of men.
He's 2 years old and no obedience training, looks like a Springer but has a double coat, white eyebrows and howls like a banshee...maybe some Husky mixed in there. He has separation anxiety that the previous owner dealt with by leaving a full food bowl and Kongs full of peanut butter....he's grossly overweight and I think he may have hip dysplasia so his rehab is going to be a challenge. I have to be very gentle with corrections due to his fear/flinching, can't use treats because of his weight and he's not very toy motivated. I will try the ball though because it sounds like a great 'leave it' tool and hopefully I can cross that over to 'leave the chickens alone'!

It's been a long time since I had a horse but three flakes sounds about right. I also fed a grain ration in winter but don't remember the recipe or amount.

Thanks for the tip on the ceramic tile BigZ. If my metal one starts leaking again like it did last year I will switch over to the plastic.

Hey, bigz, we sell straw where I work for $7/bale and we sell quite a bit. $4 doesn't sound too bad, though I personally wouldn't pay more than 3.

THanks for posting that CInd! This is what I used to use all winter....I dont go through all the machinations of making them now though--since they usually only last one winter anyhow! I use a cookie tin,,,tall kind. I use one of those plug in sockets for bulbs...plug it into an electric extension cord; add a light bulb (probably a 100 watt this year!) plug it in and put it into the tin. Set any type waterer or dish on it! No ice!
BigZ--so sorry about your friend's death...so hard at any time of the year but this is the worst! Hugs to you! I know you will support him the way it is needed.
OK--there was much more ...but alas, it is late, I need to work early and I am old! (OK not as old as SOME that shall be unnamed...

Sounds like you know enough about the dogs to keep under control huntress. And those insecure ones are the hardest to work with for sure. They are unpredictable for sure.
We are giving 4 flakes a day now. Just to be sure. If they seem to waste or add weight I willncut back again
bigz and cind, thanks for the tips! Ni like the plastic waterers better either way. That way I can add acv looks like hubs has some projects for sure
