Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I needed better use of space in my new chicken room so I decided to build 2 new brooders. Originally had planned to build them from scratch but when I walked around Menards I seen these shelves on clearance for $34.99 each and thought they'd work great for the main structure. And I still have one spot empty to fill..
This is the best brooder idea I have seen yet. Mind if I totally copy you? These look metal. Did you cover the metal shelves with anything other than bedding? What did you do for maintenance access?

Weird that the memorial post didnt show up. It said that it had. I wonder if someone has to moderate it?
Nothing new here either...we had lentil soup for FFF. It was delicious! LOL.
NIce brooders Clark! It is funny but every time I go to Menards and see those shelves set up I always thing what nice pens they would make! Great minds!

Heading off for a beverage of choice...you all have a fantastic night! TerriO

Totally cute pups Jim..

I have been reading all day about the bird flu..its horrible that so many backyard chickens will be just culled, but the big businesses will be tested and only infected culled. I guess they think its cheaper to just kill the few chickens in peoples back yard.

TO thanks for the post in the memorial. I seen it on the first page.

Great nest boxes Sclark.

The actual shelf part is sawdust board. I bought the 1/4 in 4x4 sheets of that pressed cardboard to cover the back and one side. Used 1/2 in wire for the top shelf and 1/4 for the lower so not so much bedding fell thru the holes. I didn't buy enought 1x4s to double up the front was the reason for that. the insides of one shelf I put the wire on and 2x2s on the shelves on the insides to screw both shelves together so I only had to cover one inside end. The outsides I used the leftovers of the 4x4 cardboard pieces. I used a screw driver and bent the metal rails out just enough that the board is held in tight without even having to nail anything other than to the shelf piece. You may not understand anything I just said. So total of supplies was 2 shelves($34.99), 2 4x4 sheets of 1/4 pressed cardboard($3.99 sheet), wire was around $10 roll and got 1 1/2 and 1 1/4, box of screws was around $5, scrap wood 1x4(6) and 2x2(10) .49 each. Not too bad really for cost.

Odd that Irish's post showed up before Terri's did. I just read it Terri, very well done. Thank you.

Baking and shopping in one day do not mix. I am tired. I still have a TON to do..... but I am going to bed.

Hi All!

Been a grrr day.

Nice work on the brooder.

Still have stuff to do, been fighting my body all day.

Going to say Night All now..... Night All!

.. here I am at 3 weeks old,, I weigh a little more than 6 pounds already,, my eyes opened at 17 days old.. .. I am a bit fuzzy .. I decided to not hold still for another picture,, but I am still a cutie, aren't I ??
Oh too cute On Theo's 11 mo old birthday (early this morning-midnight), he woke me up barking madly. I went out to find the police searching through the ravine again. Good boy Theo! Anyone wanting a guard dog, I'd highly recommend Jim's cute polar bear pups. Mine is the highlight of my day and a great guardian! Chickens are doing well, but something is wacky with the lighting/timing. I'll look at it a bit later. Life is a bit crazy here. We're making canned jams for gifts at the moment. DH made smoked porter jelly last night. I'll be making curry raisin today. Good day to all!

some of you peeps are in my neck of the woods...I have a house in Oshkosh...well
jim im currently eating eggs and they seem to disappear to friends....ten dozen magically vanished last week...and five dozen yesterday...so I don't have that many eggs laying around...
holy coldness it is like 5 degrees here in Michigan....with no sun it makes it even worse and to be located at the top of the hill wowzer is that wind cold...
stove is running at 400 degrees and only keeping the house at 64
well going to the coops
Monday im getting two more lady Amherst hens so im excited about that

good morning,

what are the police searching for ?

I have a theory about suplemental lighting,,
there is no scientific basis for this.. just my gut feelling,,
anyway,, divide the light between morning and evening instead of adding it all to just the morning,,
and second, if you can't divide the light,, add it to the end of the day instead of the beginning,,
that way the chickens can wake up normally and gradually with the natural rising of the sun, or in our case, the gradual lightening of the sky with no sun..
No shock waking up to a bright light..
by the end of the day they are still calm and content and the sudden darkness when the light goes out won't even be noticed.. they are mostly on the roost by then anyway ..

I put the puppies on craig's list.. the ad was bumped off within a couple of hours..
fricking cooks ..

they didn't do a thing about the cockatiel ad.. so tell me this, why is a puppy ad worse than a bird ad ? they should be equal ..
Annie has a bunch of cockatiels she want to get rid of while they are young,, cheap,,

I am sort of at a stand still with the plucker..
I have to go get some shafts and sprockets so I can move forward..
I think I have enough chain left from previous plucker builds ..
