Tyler still wants some of your babies for showing in the fair, but I'm sure it's getting to late now to grow out chicks before August.

they are beautiful birds. But such poor layers for us. We just started getting eggs from their pen. There is 3 so far this year.
Would be glad to get some for him. However I am sure it definitely will not be in time for fair. They are so sloooow to grow out!

you are on the right track,, It is still way early to plant, but as long as you can plow already, do it, then wait a couple of weeks and do it again,, wait another two weeks or as long as you can and plow again,, keep it up until planting time and then mulch like crazy ...

now is a good time to start your mulch,, crack open the bales of hay or straw.. let the seeds in it sprout and then turn the pile inside out.. keep doing this until planting time,, that should take care of most weed seeds..

too late for this season, but next fall pick up the bagged leaves from people's curb..

one day, just driving from town to home I picked up over 70 bags of leaves..
if the leaves were put into the bags wet, they rotted up into a black muck,, perfect ...

Great idea on the mulch. We have about 20 old, old bales of hay in the barn when we bought the place. They are really faded and dry, but no mold that I can see. Unfortunately, the guy that is storing hay in our barn may have his in the way for me to get that old stuff out ... I had planned on using that for mulch and pre-sprouting the seeds sounds like a good idea. If I can get it dug out, do you think it would be beneficial to moisten it and cover it with a clear plastic to help it heat up? We have a couple of big pieces of plastic that I can cover the pile with. I could also use that plastic to cover the ground in the garden area to get the frost out quicker, right now I am hitting frost about 3" down.

We collected a huge pile of leaves last fall. Those are composting right now, been sitting out all winter and the pile has shrunk some. They were vacuumed so they are chopped a little bit, but there are not enough leaves to cover the garden area by themselves sothe hay will be a nice addition.

One of the neighbors has horses and I asked about getting some manure to compost for my garden. He sounded like he was willing to let me come over and clean out the loafing shed for him this spring ...

I have a corned beef in the fridge I need to cook up. The recipe I want to try calls for a can of beer, I wonder if Spotted Cow would be good for this? My other choice is to use the Miller Lite in the fridge that is getting old (6 months). DH likes Spotted Cow, so the beer not used in the recipe would not go to waste.

same age as the LB's I got from you last year? Only 1 hen but she averages around 5/week. Lately every day. That is what I put under the broody bcm.
She has become our favorite. Will see how the bcm/lb goes.

They are a little younger. But I am very curious what you feed we went with the feed mill in our area. With a recommendation from one of the 4-h chicken gurus in our area. The feed was soo fine it ended up mostly in the bedding. I asked for them to use a different screen. And then the chickies just ate the chunks and wasted the rest.
I would love to find a good and easy feed!
Those LB sure know how to steal your heart!

Just ordered 5 almost-laying hens from a couple 9 year old girls who are raising and selling chicks off their folks' organic farm - for delivery mid-May!

They only had Rhode Island Reds left, but I asked for a variety if they had anyone change their mind.

Cuties with our small flock ( 5 hens/1 roo/ 1 roo who doesn't know hes a roo ) I give them flock raiser pellet form.
Mine free range...so they wont touch their feed unless they are penned up ( today ). Snow free...until today....
so its been 2 weeks since I last had to fill the feeder. I put some fresh feed in this morning.

I have used the mash...milled locally. Their is waste, but they are much cheaper than store bought.
When I do broilers I will ferment the mash.
