Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Firstchick...I would bet it's a crabapple tree. Yes, they make good jam and jelly. I like to add it to other fruit.

BigZ... hope you get to keep the next batch of plants.

Jim.... you know I read your posts.... I may ignore them.... but I read them

For those asking what they missed -

I was wondering about the "Sagitta" chicks from Sunnyside Hatchery. The description says they are a dual purpose hybrid from a red layer and a broiler-type bird. I am hoping for a larger bird that would be less likely to fly over the 4' fence.

Anyone have any experience with these birds?

@jvls1942 Jim, how are your broilers doing? If I recall correctly, they are from Sunnyside.

I saw your question the other day, I think this cross is new enough not many have experience with it here in WI,,,Sunnyside just started selling them last year if memory serves. I have Sunnyside special blacks and have had good luck with them as long as you don't expect them to lay many eggs in the 3rd year on.

The bad news is unless you clip wings that 4' fence isn't tall enough,,,

I really don't expect them to respect the fence, it will be there mainly for keeping the dog off the road.
I didn't know they were that new, I saw the Sagitta listed in last years brochure, so that is why I thought it was a regular "breed" they carried. I moved to Wisconsin from Wyoming last summer and started looking at what chicks were available locally, I can drive 1/2 hour to get to a store that carries chicks in-store - the Sunnyside option lets me order and get them straight from the hatchery so the chicks will not be as stressed.

I am looking for some chickens just to start out with - I have some ideas on what breeds I would like to get eventually, but right now I don't have a lot of money to spend on purebred chicks. I would rather spend what money I have now on getting the coop set-up right and the good quality feeders, waterers, fencing (they will have a secure run area for when we are not home - the 4 foot is just a free-range area) that will work with how I want to keep the chickens.

Thanks for the reply

good morning,

I have a couple of thoughts on a couple of things,, I just hope I can remember them when i skip down to the next line..

My meaties are doing just fine,, they bunched up the first two nights and smothered a few.
I opened up another section and divided them a bit so now they don't all try to sit under one or two lights..
I did get them from Sunnyside and I did buy them from a local feed store.. No 2 or 3 days riding who knows where with USPS .. they come straight to the feed store in a Sunnyside truck.. same day delivery,, all lively and healthy and unstressed ..

I think some of you are familiar with my views on pure breed chickens..
do it right from the word get go.. especially if you are planning on doing some hatching in the future.
get only one or two breeds and that will make separating easier when the time comes.. as you get into it and have more breeding pens, then get more breeds. stay ahead of the breeds with your pen building..
If you start out with a barnyard mix, then you will be fighting that for a long time to get down to just the pure breeds..

I had 100 buff orpingtons one year.. I kept them in a 4 foot fence,, for the most part they stayed in there,, I have to mention that it was a large fenced in area..about 100' x 100'; so they didn't realize they were fenced in.. and the buff orps are so laid back, they are content to not try flying.

Wet Morning here....yep, we have the Washington Hawthorne here. Mine only spread from fruit that goes to seed. It is super hard wood and a very slow grower that turns out to be beautiful specimens that I actually promote here. They get a huge crown and can be trimmed on the bottom...the turkeys love them. I'll try to remember to take a pick of one and post it when jennie is around. Suzie cut the lawn yesterday and I replanted the eaten plants.

Have fun...bigz
