Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Gee Huntress makes me double think my issues with a couple of my birds... One I know had Vent Gleet, due to the smell...She appears fully recovered today though. The other suspected case though has no smell, just a red toosh, scrawny and diarreah. I have always feed quality feed, it is always fresh and does not have a chance to mold... Kind of anal about keeping things clean, bleaching every spring and fall etc, raising birds is a crap shoot... the best we try mother nature gets in there and messes things up. So sorry for you losses, but admire you positive attitude.Hopeful though as you stated it is not contagious, just if a bird has a weakened system it is not going to be able to fight off the disease.

I am laying newspaper in the garden and clippings on top... going to attempt a no weed garden this way... I hate pulling weeds and when I get home from work sun is setting and the mosquitoes are especially hungry, probably cause I am so sweet

Hi All

I have a question. Surprise, Surprise.....I have tomato plants in a raised box. 4 of them. 2 have leaf curl and a leathery feel, the other two are growing well and look healthy. I have read it could be the weather, so much rain lately, or it could be a virus...I have not seen the white butterflys around much...one or two I think, so should I pull the affected plants or not?

Have you been fertilizing? May be too much? Or could be the result of too much water in the area where they are planted... If they are yellowing I would pull, if not I would quit fertilizing and wait for the weather to dry up a bit...

I want to thank you all for the well wishes! I know that I don't get to post here often and my intent was not to come on now to scare anyone, it was simply to explain to the people I promised chicks to why I can't deliver. I learned much from this experience and if sharing my findings helps anyone else dodge a bullet that's great! The biggest problem with diagnosing this disease is that many of the symptoms are common to everyday chicken problems. One example is the diarrhea. In another flock it may not be a big deal and very treatable but here the birds tested negative for Coccidiosis, and none of the antibiotics I tried helped so I knew I had a bigger problem.

@momgille the disease is HIGHLY contagious...if one bird in the flock has it they all do. One bad thing is that this spring I went to the swap in Fond du Lac and saw birds there with the same symptoms as mine. At the time I didn't know what the disease was but now I feel bad that someone may have bought those birds and are now wondering why they are sick. It's too bad that our state certification program doesn't test for this.

CC, that lav hen was the last bird to leave here before I started the quarantine. I'm glad she's doing well and will probably take you up on your offer after I have things cleaned up here. I guess the one advantage to all this is that I get to shop for more birds now.

I filled the boxes with garden soil from a local nursery. The only thing I did was put epsom salt/sugar in each hole when planted which I have done for years. The leaves are not yellowing, so guess I'll leave em. Probably too much water.

Firstchic- did you harden off your plants first?

Morning everyone! I'm tired as I stayed up to watch the Hawks win the Stanley Cup!!! I love my Blackhawks.

I hope everyone is faring well with all of the rain coming down. We've not had much flooding here luckily, but the river is full and the ravine is over its boundaries. Since we are ~3 stories above the river basin, we're good for flooding at our house.

Cind- Nathan and I are just starting into the "research" part of getting things like camper, boat, kayak, etc. Since we are empty nesters, we have more time to enjoy ourselves now!!! Your sons boat has been named perfectly! Maybe one day, we will be able to name our own?

Bigz-Nathan did stop to look at that camper by you, I'm not sure if he contacted the guy or not. I'll have to ask if he was interested in it or not.

most likely too wet,,,all the rain and cool nights will lend themselves to the onslaught of early blight. Here are my suggestions;
1. hopefully there are drain holes in the bottom of the box
2. make sure you pinch off the bottom 2-3 branches so the rain doesn't splatter on the lower leaves (the virus comes from the soil) the yellowing starts at the bottom if this is the case
3. patience, a few warm sunny days should straighten them up,,,,hopefully the current weather pattern will change soon

Thanks, I have pinched of the lower branches, it is possible I got a little ocd with my pruning. Altho, I did that to all of them and it seems to be affecting two in the same box. The box does have good drainage but will all the water we have had, maybe overwhelmed.

They were hardened off, but, we got a couple of cool nights here after planting, I did cover them with plastic, they seemed to all be growing quite well, the stems and branches are thick tho, compared with the other plants. Beats me, waiting and waiting.
